Can and Lucas bring the basic requirements of a standard midfielder, energy and physical strength plus can trap a ball. They are 6/10 in everything, not great but acceptable. They also had Milner with them who is 6/10 in everything.

Mikel and Ramires do not bring the basics.

Mikels ball retention is 10/10. His energy and tracking of runners is 1/10 and speed of passing is 1/10.

Ramires energy is 10/10. His strength on the ball is 1/10, his control and passing is 1/10.

You cannot put both of them together and expect them to compensate for each other. Mikel wants to slow the game, Ramires wants to speed it up. If Ramires runs forward, you just counterattack Mikel easily. If you catch Ramires 1 on 1 and shove him off the ball like Charlie Adam, Mikel will not make up the ground to cover him.

It is a HORRIBLE combination.

Any standard average midfield will better them all other things being equal.

There is a reason David Luiz and Kurt Zouma have been drafted substantially into midfield in the last 3 years.

In the last two minutes of the game, the ball fell to Zouma inside the box with only one Stoke player marking him. Ivanovic, Azpi even Cahill would have attempted to create space and take the shot. Zouma passed the ball back out of the box.

Defensively, Zouma wasn't much better at RB either. Walters continued to breakaway in the right and cut in to shoot time and time again, and Arnautovic had the beating of Zouma all night long.

I'm not castigating Zouma at all-Right Back is simply not his game.

I saw a lot of positives though.

Regardless of what anybody here says, the team plays a lot better with Oscar in it. He was pressing high up, making tackles and creating space with his movement off the ball for Hazard to exploit.

It's not a coincidence that Hazard looked close to the man he was last term -although I thought his best work came when Stoke were already a man down. If he had scored his pen, Hazards confidence would have gotten a much needed boost. I just hope that the coaching staff can encourage him before the weekend. Minus the missed Pen, Hazard did very well.

Mikel bossed the game last night as well. I was impressed.

Costa looked hungry for goals man. That injury was a real blow. I earnestly hope he's fit for the pool game. We need that aggression back.

I'm still quietly optimistic we can get the right result against Liverpool. Their defence is wack. Their midfield is wack. Sturridge is injured and I hear Benteke is injured again.

Jose just needs to come correct, cos his stubbornness is costing us games.

Every member of this thread has been calling for a worthy partner for Matic all summer. In my case even longer.

Tiago was not a great midfielder but he won everything for Chelsea. Lucas and Can have the basic requirement to play midfield.

Fabregas, Ramires and Mikel are 1/10 in certain aspects of their game that make them completely unsuitable for the pivot and unbalance the team fatally.

Put Can or Lucas alongside Matic and that midfield is good to go. I am even on record as saying Jack Cork who is 5/10 in everything will improve that midfield.

It is not whether you are world class in certain aspects that make a midfield, you must have every aspect of midfield play to a proficient level to make a stable midfield.

That has always been my major concern ever since. Especially that benteke goal was the most annoying. Benteke would have finished a can of pepsi before hitting that ball. For those who followed chelsea of the terry/carvalho era, they would n't like to watch such moment. Lampard's facial expression said it all. I saw these sluggishness in the defence line in preseason and knew we are in for it. If you like bring 3 mechanics into the midfield, once the defenders are not doing their jobs the ball will always find its way into the net. I saw emenalo shaking his head on the bench too. All of them including mourinho should be fired.
