If they can terrorize people to part with their money, imagine how useful they can be when trained and properly defined for the job of tax collectors or health inspectors.....or even animal control!

Fulani leaders have embarked on self-registration of herders. This was a requirement demanded by Yoruba leaders. I would expect the Yorubas to raise an enforcement corps to police fulani herders. The enforcers are rated on performance that is subsidised on the income generated from anjmal licence and penalties and fees collected ftom code violation.

No one is a waste....everyone is useful when properly defined and assessed broadly.

It seems we are not doing the yoruba hour today because of the absence of AARE....too bad.Let me post this about the area boys syndrome.

AREA BOYS
1. It’s a social Problem: The menace of street urchin is a social problem. It will require a solution that must address the root cause of the problem. Any attempt to remove them forcefully will create another problem bigger than their presence on the streets of Lagos. Armed robbery and other violence outbreaks can occur if street urchins are forced to go underground without an alternative means of surviving.



2. Son of the Soil: Street urchins, agberos, area boys or alayes as they are popularly called are native to Lagos. Since they are son of the soil, the political will to remove them from the streets where they cause problems to law abiding citizens is lacking. So they seem to have come to stay.

3. Useful for Political Reasons: In an environment where political brigandage dominates politics, politicians employ the use of agberos to do the leg work for them. They are used for sundry purposes. Tales have been told of how area boys and politicians form ‘unholy’ alliance during electioneering period.

4. Politicians Use them to Intimidate political opponents: When politician want to instill fear into their political opponents, area boys are said to come in handy.



5. Enforcers: Area boys can use any weapon they lay their hands on to achieve their aim. They can have their way in any situation as long as violence is involved. Local government in Lagos are known to have engaged and employed to collect tenement rate and other levies from commercial bike riders.

6.They Solve the Employment Problem: With unemployment figure record high, politicians are careful not to remove agberos from the street because it has solved the unemployment situation. Agberos for example are gainfully employed collecting toll in motor parks from commercial buses.

7. They Service the Patronage system: The bootlegging system that drive the existence of area boys in Lagos also alleged to make financial returns from the money the levy they collect from commercial bus drivers.

8. They Are used as bodyguards: Fierce looking street urchins with bulging muscles make good body guards to those who can pay for their services.



9. They are used to foment trouble during crisis: Area boys can be used to instigate violence.

10. They are Useful in debt collection: If you need collect debt from the chronic debtor, then you can employ the services of area boys to get the money even with ‘interest’.
