I think you asked what to change topic to.

Well, we should sample.opinion from brothers and sisters here on how everybody feel about adopting YORUBA COMMONWEALTH as a rebrand of our political identity.

I personally dont like SW....that was created by a political party and does not fully encompass who we are. A commonwealth fit more with our kinship.

To add to it, Ooni-Elect has stated that our Commonwealth is a prime focus and priority for him, to reawaken Yoruba Consciousness. We should support that imperative. It starts here,

Osun to partner Chinese firm on economic development programmes

NMA issues ultimatum to government on salary arrears
Osun State Government has signed a broad range of economic development partnership with a Chinese Firm, Geo Engineering Construction Alliance Team.

The pact covers Agro Industrial Park, Export Processing, Hydro Power, Dry Port Associated Enterprise Park and Water supply and Road Projects among others.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in the State has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government to pay its members working with the state, all outstanding salary arrears, deductions and other allowances.

A statement by the Director Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Office of the Governor Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, quoted the State governor, Rauf Aregbesola as stating after the signing ceremony in Abuja at the weekend that the efforts of his administration to economically turn around the state are yielding desired results.

According to Aregbesola, with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chinese Geo Engineering Construction Alliance Team, the State will maintain its front row position in employment generation and modern technology in agriculture.

He noted, “The manufacturing logistics, coordination, management and facility development of the Chinese Engineering Construction will soon be deployed for the benefit of the people of the state.”

In his remarks, Leader of the China Geo Engineering Construction Alliance Team, Mr. Shui Jin Tony, assured Governor Aregbesola that with the signing of the MOU on the Broad Range of Economic Development Partnership, the Firm would hit the ground running in a week.

He said their resolve to begin the economic development partnership within a week is a demonstration of the commitment and seriousness of the firm to the Memorandum of Understanding.

Also, a French partnership, VERGNET GROUPE, has said the 13 Megawatts Solar Power Project in the State of Osun will position the state well ahead of its peers especially in solar power energy.

Addressing the State of Osun Delegation before the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding which also had the French Ambassador, Dean Gauer as well as French Economic Counselor, Demónique Simon, Head of the Team, Frederick Chieve, applauded the political will of the State government in buying into the renewable energy through the solar power project.

According to Chieve, the 13 Megawatts Solar Power Project will provide huge employment opportunities to the youths and complement the epileptic power supply.

Aregbesola, in his remarks before the signing, noted that energy and by extension power is key, critical and a primary requirement for development.

He stressed that since adequate and uninterrupted supply of power and energy is capable of reducing poverty, powering the communities through alternative sources will continuously be focused on by the administration.

He charged the partnering firm VERGNET GROUPE to deploy the International best practices in the solar power project.

Earlier, Director General, Office of the Economic Development and Partnership, Dr. Charles Akinola, had noted the uniqueness of the VERGNET GROUPE in the additional power generation to reduce dependence on the national grid.

The NMA while issuing the ultimatum also said it fully supported the on-going industrial action by Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital (LTH), Osogbo and Osun State Association of Medical and Dental Officers (OSAMDO).

In a statement signed by the state Chairman and Secretary of the NMA, Dr. Suraj Ogunyemi and Dr. Adeola Ajibare and made available to journalists at the weekend, the association said it resolved to issue the ultimatum after critical review of the situation pertaining to health sector in the state.

Amosun urges commissioners to uphold financial prudence

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun yesterday sworn-in 18 Commissioners to join his adminstration to run the affairs of the State in the next four years. Amosun is running his second tenure.
At the colourful ceremony held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, 18 Special Assistants (SAs) and four Consultants to the Governor were also sworn-in.

Amosun retained four of his Commissioners during his first tenure. They are Mr. Muyiwa Oladipo, Mrs. Ronke Sokefun, Lekan Adegbite and Bimbo Ashiru.

The Governor in his speech charged the appointees to see their positions as a call to duty, be thoroughly professional in all their official duties and shun all corrupt practices.

He told the appointees, “I charge you to regard your appointment, out of a pool of equally well qualified people, as entirely a call to service. You must realise that your appointments are an opportunity to prove your mettle as we jointly forge ahead in the ‘’Mission to Rebuild” our dear State”.

He added, “You must always be conscious of the fact that the responsibility for taking our dear State to unprecedented heights of development and prosperity in an environment of peace and harmony now rests squarely on your shoulders”.

“I urge you to see your appointment as an opportunity to contribute your own quota to the development of our dear State. And, as you take up that responsibility today, I enjoin you to be ready to work twice harder than before in order to collectively bring accelerated development to our great State. Ensuring at all times to achieve and display OGUN STANDARD”, Amosun affirmed.

The Governor told his new team players, “You must be reminded that your duties must be carried out in consonance with the best practices. You must be professional in your dealings, most especially in the area of proper Administration and Financial prudence. You must be conscious and careful in your dealings and avoid any financial profligacy and/or impropriety that will put your name into disrepute”.

“Be aware that the change mantra of the President Muhammadu Buhari Led Administration has percolated down and the Eagle eyes of the Anti graft agencies are everywhere”, Amosun affirmed.

Meanwhile, a civil Society group, the Democratic Agenda (DA) has warned the opposition party in Osun state against making spurious allegations against the State governor, Rauf Aregbesola saying as responsible opposition, they must uphold the truth at all times.

In a statement signed by the convener and secretary of Democratic Agenda, Alhaji Lateef Olalekan‎ and Nurudeen Ayinde Abiola respectively, pointed out that the opposition in its usual practice lied on the governor of the state when the Bail out Fund was still being approved and told the world that Aregbesola had not only collected the funds but had gone to put the fund in unnamed fixed deposit account for gains.

Osun gets micro-grid solar power

s part of efforts to stem rural-urban migration, the Bank of Industry (BoI) has inaugurated a 24kilowatts (kw) micro-grid solar solution in two communities in Osun State.

BoI Managing Director Mr. Rasheed Olaoluwa, said the project is in furtherance of the United Nations campaign for eco-friendly sources of energy. With this initiative, Osun is the first state to benefit from Bol’s intervention in the provision of renewable energy in Southwest, he added.

The solar electrification project is located in Idi-Ata and Onibambu communities in Osun State. Olaoluwa, however, lamented that rural communities are the worst hit in terms of poor access to electricity, especially the off-grid arrears, which have always been without power supply and have resigned their fate to the use of kerosene lanterns, oil lamps, and other types of dangerous and unhealthy sources of light to be able to live daily.

The development, he said, has hampered the socio-economic development of the nation as it has created an atmosphere that is not conducive for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which are the drivers of the nation’s economic growth.

He stated that the situation remained one of the main factors responsible for the concept of rural-urban migration. Olaoluwa noted that the 4,500 megawatts (Mw) of electricity generated from the national grid was grossly inadequate for a leading African economy like Nigeria with a population of about 170 million people, hence the intervention of Bol and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The Bol chief said the bank is starting off with the provision of long-term financing for the installation of off-grid solar home systems in six communities in a pilot phase, as part of its Solar Energy Partnership with UNIDO.

He said: “These communities with an average of 200 homes each are located in Anambra, Edo, Gombe, Kaduna, Niger and Osun States. Today, we have come to Osun State in partnership with Arnergy Solar Limited to commission a 24kw micro-grid solar electrification system in Idi-ita/Onibambu, a community which hitherto had no access to electricity.”

The Governor of the State of Osun, Rauf Aregbesola urged the leader of the two communities to judiciously protect the installation and ensure that payments are promptly made for energy consumed so that the scheme can be self-sustaining to encourage the investor replicate such in other locations within the state.

Aregbesola, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Moshood Adeoti said: “As a responsible government, I want the Ministry of Water Resources, Rural Development and Community Affairs to carry out due diligence on the issue of appropriate pricing and adequate supply to each household. This is to ensure consumer protection against exploitation.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Arnergy, Mr. Femi Adeyemo, said the application of technology for industrialisation is key to enthroning sustainable economic growth and development, adding that the off-grid solar rural electrification is to help reduce the wide gap/deficit in the energy sector in the country.

BENEFITS OF SOLAR POWER

Solar power helps to slow/stop global warming [this is important to ilekeh, I'm a semi-treehugger]. Global warming threatens the survival of human society, as well as the survival of countless species. Luckily, decades (or even centuries) of research have led to efficient solar panel systems that create electricity without producing global warming pollution. Solar power is now very clearly one of the most important solutions to the global warming crisis.

Solar power saves society billions or trillions of dollars. Even long before society’s very existence is threatened by global warming, within the coming decades, global warming is projected to cost society trillions of dollars if left unabated. So, even ignoring the very long-term threat of societal suicide, fighting global warming with solar power will likely save society billions or even trillions of dollars.

Solar power saves you money. Putting solar PV panels on your roof is likely to save you tens of thousands of dollars. The average 20-year savings for Americans who went solar in 2011 were projected to be a little over $20,000. In the populous states of New York, California, and Florida, the projected savings were over $30,000. In the sunny but expensive paradise known as Hawaii, the projected savings were nearly $65,000!

Beyond solar PV panels, it’s worth noting that solar energy can actually save you money in about a dozen other ways as well — with proper planning and household design choices.

Solar power provides energy reliability. The rising and setting of the sun is extremely consistent. All across the world, we know exactly when it will rise and set every day of the year. While clouds may be a bit less predictable, we do also have fairly good seasonal and daily projections for the amount of sunlight that will be received in different locations. All in all, this makes solar power an extremely reliable source of energy.

Solar power provides energy security. On top of the above reliability benefit, no one can go and buy the sun or turn sunlight into a monopoly. Combined with the simplicity of solar panels, this also provides the notable solar power advantage of energy security, something the US military has pointed out for years, and a major reason why it is also putting a lot of its money into the development and installation of solar power systems.

Solar power provides energy independence. Similar to the energy security boost, solar power provides the great benefit of energy independence. Again, the “fuel” for solar panels cannot be bought or monopolized. It is free for all to use. Once you have solar panels on your roof, you have an essentially independent source of electricity that is all yours. This is important for individuals, but also for cities, counties, states, countries, and even companies. I was recently in Ukraine touring various cleantech initiatives and projects. While there, I discovered that Ukraine in recent years has saved approximately $3 billion in reduced oil and gas imports from Russia thanks to the solar power plants developed by a single developer. Impressive.

Solar power creates jobs. As a source of energy, solar power is a job-creating powerhouse. Money invested in solar power creates two to three times more jobs than money invested in coal or natural gas.

[If Osun state takes these advantages into perspective, the state will be going the right route] smiley

I Feel Honoured to be Nigeria’s First Female Deputy Governor

Her aged but dreamy, resolute eyeballs sparkle as she recalls those delightful and dreadful moments that determined her destiny – a life course of ingenuity, serendipity, honesty and perspicacity. A woman of many parts, resolute in thoughts and vigorous in actions, she trod paths most women were unlikely to consider during her generation. Her pedigree stands her in good stead but she has triumphed solely by her own vision and capability. She is a beauty to behold and a brain to listen to; the first female Nigerian to be an executive director in any bank in Nigeria and the first female deputy governor in Nigeria. She is a woman driven by passion as well as excellence and fairness. For Alhaja Aderoju Sinatu Ojikutu, former Lagos State Deputy Governor, who turned 70 on October 23, life seems to have just begun. In this interview with Funke Olaode, Alhaja Ojikutu narrates the episodes of her childhood defiance and repercussions, her triumphs as a truthful and straightforward public official, her marital pains of long wait to have a child and then the loss of her beloved hubby. Ojikutu looks up for a moment and sees a new vista. Find out what it is

Is Lagos Home to an African Tech Movement?

The Lagos taxi driver roars across the biggest bridge in Africa at 110 mph. Buffeted by the night wind, it feels as if we're riding a motorbike.

I am with two South Africans and a guy from Silicon Valley. We’re all swilling from a bottle of so-called whisky, including the man behind the wheel. (When your taxi driver says his name is "Success," things can’t possibly go wrong.)

Lagos, Nigeria seems like an unlikely place for Africa’s major tech hub. The city's estimated population is 21 million people, and 30,000 more Africans are arriving every day.

Ten years ago, architect and author Rem Koolhaas co-wrote Mutation. After studying Nigeria’s biggest city, he says, "Lagos is not catching up with us; rather, we may be catching up with Lagos." "Lagos is not catching up with us; rather, we may be catching up with Lagos." He may have been right.

It seems fanciful to equate Lagos with a 21st century New York, as Koolhaas does. For all intents and purposes, the city should not operate at all. Its chaos outstrips that of Cairo or New Delhi.

But within the insanity, a new type of region is emerging.

In a city gridlocked by traffic after 6 a.m. and rampant with crime, Lagos offers non-mobile Internet. Wi-Fi is gut-wrenchingly slow. But despite its weak infrastructure, it stands because of its innovative residents and their hunger to succeed in the most competitive of environments.

May’s Mobile Web West Africa sold out its Lagos conference, bringing together companies, startups, inspiring investors and developers. The three-day event was the background to the emerging economic and inspired power of the region, and Lagos’s aspiration to be the city at the center of that universe.

Across Victoria Island to the "mainland" and over the bridge my taxi crossed, the city’s Co Creation Hub (CcHub) is a collaborative work space for young entrepreneurs and coders. It's close to the University of Lagos. Like similar spaces in Palo Alto, London, Berlin or Moscow, individuals converge in one space to share ideas. They even have the chance to meet VCs and angels looking for promising investments. It’s an amazing place.

But such meetup hubs compete with others around the continent. Nairobi has the iHub, a similar space, supported by companies like Google, Intel and Samsung. And the government recently announced plans for Konza Techno City — the finished project will reside 40 miles south of Nairobi, with aims to create 100,000 tech jobs by 2030.

Closer to Nigeria, the neighboring country of Ghana recently announced Hope City, a $10 billion hub in capital Accra that will see Africa’s tallest building emerge from shrubland. By 2016 Hope City will house 25,000 residents and will have created some 50,000 jobs.

Not to be outdone, South Africa has the JoziHub in Johannesburg, launched in February 2013, while Cape Town is attempting to brand itself as Silicon Cape by creating a non-profit, community-owned infrastructure that supports startups with capital and expertise.

Alas, Africa is replete with stories about great ambitions and grandiose projects that never see the light of day. Nigeria is no different. Alas, Africa is replete with stories about great ambitions and grandiose projects that never see the light of day. Nigeria is no different.

Tinapa Resort, the planned shopping and commerce "paradise" in the Cross Rivers state, is a warning to all who believe that investment necessarily creates cities and jobs. More than $350 million was ploughed into the project, thought to boost business and tourism before it opened in 2007, based on a deep sea port in the city of Calabar, which did not exist or materialize. The resort gathered dust, becoming a ghost town — another African disaster.

That is, until the newly elected regional government announced the rehabilitation of Tinapa in the form of Tinapa Knowledge City, a private sector-driven investment to serve as an alternate ICT hub to Lagos.

The government, privately-owned Covenant University and oil company OANDO will create a campus and gas plant that will ultimately employ 10,000 people. Legendary Nigerian investor and influencer Harry Tomi Davies finds the new scheme one that costs a lot of money but is ultimately a burden, in other words, a "white elephant turned black by technology," he says.

Time will tell whether Tinapa emerges as a phoenix rather than a pachyderm. But in Nigeria, there is a sense that anything is possible — especially in Lagos, where the infrastructural impediments to success are driving entrepreneurship.

Nairobi, Accra, Johannesburg and Cape Town are all vying with Lagos to claim ownership of Last Frontier Africa, the continent of the 21st century.

Just ask my speeding taxi driver. He knows Success when he sees it.
