The fine is too much; should be reconsidered.

I mean taking many other factors into consideration.

They can't shift their anger,NCC is monitoring them and in a competitive market like that if they cheat covertly people will 'port' lol.I only see them reducing their Corporate Social Responsibility which is not even up to the about 4.3 Bill USD they have been fined.Just relax blue chip companies are being fined hundreds of billions regularly around the world for flouting government policies,MTN won't shake.
stop exaggerating it. No company is been charge hundred of billions of dollars in the world. MTN is not even a fortune 500 company. Paying 4.3 billion dollars will destroy the company in Nigeria. I think the NCC will reduce the fine later

Where did you see hundreds of billions of dollars? I think you need to read again. Also, BP was fined about 20 Billion USD by the US govt over oil spill nd they paid. So, stop talking bout what you don't know.

Meanwhile, Mtn can pay and must pay. VP Osinbajo is a shareholder in MTN and he has insisted that they pay.

I agree I exaggerated it to some extent because no particular company has actually been fined hundreds of billions but the total fines run into 100s of billions yearly. Not to talk of the billions on vehicle recalls abroad......And no problem even if it is reduced atleast the message has been passed.

Of course I wish for same and even better. But it doesn't happen through ridiculous fining of a major investor fully knowing that they operate under unfriendly environment. Government as a matter of urgency MUST fix infrastructure, provide security and punish officials that demands for bribes or kick-backs from these operators before granting their legitimate request. These are some of the things countries like SA do.

The news is more of speculation. MTN can't afford that kind of money. Except there will be some kind of waivers, a suspended payment or spread payment. Otherwise, the company CAN'T afford it. We also can't afford to have their license suspended.

Brother let me prove to you why they have agreed to pay the money.
1 MTN has a customer base of atleast 30Million
2 The minimum amount for calls on all network is #6 if 11k/seconds option is activated
3 so assuming a base of 30million and #6 a minute call =#180million
4 for 10minutes call =#1.8Billion
5 for 100minutes call =#18Billion
6 for 1000minutes call =#180Billion
7 Remember the actual minimum bill per minute is #6.60 instead of #6
8 Others might have subscribed to higher tarrif
9 The 1000minutes call per customer is pegged for 1year, meaning several others will exceed that estimated figure
10 The MTN customer base is more than 30million benchmark
11 This does not include bills for various data plan subscribed for by this same customers
12 Besides it has been agreed to be paid concessionally, meaning may be to be paid instalmentally for 4years
13 So customers should not be scared of any rip-off from MTN has nothing negative will come from them in the spirit of competition
14 I hope I made sense small

Fine good, concession necessary. At the end of the day it is a win-win situation. Had mtn been forced to comply with the fine one time, it might not have augur well for the interest of the country as a whole. Subscribers and staff of the company would have borne the brunt but with payment staggered they can now pay with relative ease.

Haha, you make sense oga but.. You didn't factor operation cost, maintainace of their facilities, wages and salaries, security, kick-backs that officials demand etc. Then we move to posting profit for shareholders and surviving in the market under a hard Nigerian environment. Boss, give MTN 10years and they won't be able to pay. We are talking of $5billion here o.

While pleading for staggered payment model, MTN has finally bowed to pressure as it has accepted to pay the N1.04 trillion fine slammed on it last week by the telecoms regulatory authority, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Accordingly, the telecoms operator was fine for violating its directive on SIM deactivation.

This follows series of meeting held between MTN management team from South Africa and Nigeria with the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The telecoms operator which has largest subscriber base in Nigeria, it was gathered, may have agreed to pay the fine to sustain the interest of its telecoms business.

Industry sources who confirmed the new arrangement, disclosed that the federal government is already yielding to the plea, which according to him, was part of the agreement reached at the series of meeting held at the weekend in Nigeria.

“There have been series of meeting at the Presidency between the Vice President Osinbajo and MTN team both from South Africa and the Nigerian arm. MTN wanted a waiver considering their level of investments in the country, but government did not buy the idea of waiver. Instead, I think there will be concession, but certainly not a waiver. At the conclusion of the meeting, the MTN people negotiated on how to stagger the payment. The Presidency is even angry because MTN was a signatory to the regulation, but they are failing to comply with rules.”, the source added.

It would be recalled that NCC had said that MTN would not escape the fine, owing to the enormity of its implication to national security.

Although NCC had hinted that the issue is being handled by the federal government, the telecoms authority also noted that MTN would risk withdrawal of its licence if its fails to comply with the fine.

Even with the widespread calls for the intervention of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), on the N1.04 trillion fine, Chief Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), had last week called on the NSA not to intervene in the matter, adding that NCC regulation must take its course.

NCC said it had consistently engaged Mobile Network Operators, (MNOs) to strictly adhere to the regulations and its business rules in the registration of their subscribers.

Following several engagements, the Commission had confirmed various cases of violations of the regulations and sanctioned appropriately.
