Oooh!! Thank you so much for this!! It brought back such great memories of my childhood. I was never able to understand the words, but I would join my late maternal grand father on the verandah, as he nodded his head to different Ewi minstrels every Saturday morning!

He was not even Yoruba, but he had a deep appreciation for the culture (he spoke it like a native), and listening to Ewi, while sipping chilled palm wine was his own way of chilling out. We would both nod in tandem with the drum beats and shekere, and he would sometimes pause to explain a few words of the songs to me!

I am trying so hard not to cry....

I just had to throw that out here cos the thread's dying and the guy who start the complaint is yet to contribute anything. Yet he came on the thread again today to complain about the change of name. I just don't like folks who are like that. If you have nothing to contribute, then you shouldn't have an opinion. This isn't his first time - he did the same thing on the Ibadan thread. The guy lives in Ibadan - rather than take pics of his own area in Ibadan and contribute to the thread, he was just moaning and giving folks orders on what to do and what not to do. Who does that?

Anyway, personally, this thread has inspired me a great deal - especially the profiles we posted. And cos of certain folks that I saw on this thread, I've changed my diary and set new goals for myself, for the remainder of this year. Some of the posts are also enlightening and we can't stop now. We just need to keep educating and inspiring one another. Yoruba commonwealth is bigger than just the SWern part of Nigeria - it's global.

I think when we say certain things are dying amongst Yorubas we should be clear to differentiate amongst which groups of Yorubas.Isese Yorubas are fighting to hold onto Yoruba culture in its entirety and for that group....I don't think it will die off...for the others...well only time go tell.

For those looking for Yoruba architecture - I believe the Egba were able to build great architecture in the mid-late 19th century and early 20th century in Abeokuta. Perhaps, folks just need to modernise what the Egbas were able to create.

Oriki is so deep ...... they use Yoruba ila amin to create beatiful lyrics (se ki n ki (greet) yin ni abi se ki n ki (oriki) yin).

We need to bring back these culture...

Yes, the pattern looks artistic. However, I doubt it has anything to do with Islam cos I don't think the Egbas ever embraced Islam like that (I might be wrong) cos their history when they moved from Ibadan to Abeokuta is intertwined with Christianity and the missionaries. And the house I posted is the Kuti family house (I believe Fela Kuti's dad was a pastor or something like that).
