ilekemd: Are you really an Atheist, Ileke? If you are, then we have one more thing in common, besides being both Yoruba. I believe the entire universe is just too gargantuan and overly complex for one "being" to be its mastermind. There is definitely no "God" and I have a lot of Proofs to back up my assertion. The idea of a biblical or quranic "God" is a falsity. I admire Ogun, though. Ogun l'akaiye osinmole. The Yoruba "god" of war, iron and metallic ore. |

laudate: quimicababes: What Laudate and others perceive to be dying are actually very much alive. The wood crafts, cloth dying, cloth weaving, traditional hairstyle weaving to mention a few are very much alive but are restricted to the hinterlands. Although they appear to have pretty much gone into extinction, the reality is that Yoruba families are structured in a way that each family is specialized in something and has it restricted to them - kingship, chieftaincy, religion, sculpture, dance, ewi/poetry, cloth weaving, hunting etc. And as a result, as long as these families and their compounds exist, these 'certain things' will continue to exist. |

9jacrip: Guy, when was the last time you went into the hinterlands?? If those crafts were not dying, they should have been growing and quite visible in every local government, both in the cities and the villages. Only traditional hair-dressing seems to have thrived irrespective of location, but that was NOT even mentioned in our discourse. Weave-on even appears to be a preferred medium of hair expression among the ladies, these days. Take Ewi for example. When was the last time an Ewi piece got into the Top Ten Charts in the South-western part of Nigeria?? Let us look at Aso-oke. In how many towns and villages does this art thrive, all over the South-West? This is something that whole communities and villages should be engaged in, and not just a few families. And if you compare the usage of local compressed earth mud blocks for building houses today, with the number of houses being built using cement, you would realise that this art of using traditional earth blocks for building houses is fast going into extinction. The same thing goes for traditional blacksmithing, copperworks etc. 1 Like |

quimicababes: The first emboldened is wrong. Isese folks are not necessarily the people who identify with the system, although the population of those who identify with is quite large - starting from Lagos to Offa and Yagba in Kogi. Also, the Christians and the Muslims are also Isese practitioners although 'low-key'. They, when their adopted religions cannot take them past a situation, they turn to Isese for everything. I make bold to say Isese people are as much as Christians and Muslims in SWest. The second emboldened is correct. Yoruba folks only begin to appreciate their stuff when they see outsiders, especially folks with white skin who brought them their adopted religions doing Yoruba things. You'd discover may people have dropped Islam/Christianity just because they saw white folks in person or in video practicing the Yoruba isese thing. Africans and the need for validation |

quimicababes: Isese is an embodiment of the entire Yoruba culture. The language, dressing, greetings, poetry, scuplture etc. You'd find that those who are Yoruba by birth and speak Yoruba do not necessarily possess the qualities of the Yoruba culture. Place that against someone who practices Isese, even a foreigner. There will always be a difference. 1 Like |

quimicababes: As I've always said, Africans in the Diaspora do not necessarily have to go through the DNA to find their ancestry. I believe over the years too much damage has been done for them to pin point where their actually family in Africa is/was. So I often suggest you read about various cultures in Africa and adopt one, learn it thoroughly, identify with it and pass it on to your kids. This way, you'd give your many generations to come an African identity. Just my thoughts. |
