Most people will notice i hardly talk abt Biochemistry, well, thats because me saying i hate biochem is the understatement of the century. From my sec school days, chemistry has always been a mystery i culdnt solve. If i were a detective, chemistry will b dat one crime that will kip me awake every nyt. So its nt a suprise why i hate biochemistry. One things sure tho, i knew i had to pass even if i dont lyk the course. So i had to start preparin way ahead, so i dont loose my dream cos of CHEMISTRY!!!!!! I eventually found out not only is biochemistry simple, its in fact suited to my ability to cram anytin up there. All that didnt increase my love for the course, it gave me a leverage to tackle that mystery. I stopped seeing biochemistry as a mystery instead as that roomate who snores all nyt bt u just hav to put up wit it till u leave the damn University. Well, thats Biochemistry |

How do i spend my average week in med skul? MONDAY: 8 - 12 am --------> Gross Anatomy lecture... The lecturer lects on basic things to be knwn in anatomy. Gives diagrams to explain the LITTLE things explained. U might ask how a 4 hours lecture could ever be described as little. Gross Anatomy is so wide, majority of wat u knw comes from personal study. I believe lectures are only there to stamp wat uve read. Thats my opinion tho. 12 - 1 pm. BREAK Time for mama put things. ; chat wit friends. Have many of them. Bemoan the stress of med skul. Discuss abt football, politics etc... 2 - 6 pm GROSS PRACTICAL Been long i talked abt our FRIENDS in that smelling room. Yes, i can call them that now, the only part i havent dissected is the head and neck, so basically i knw them very well now. That passes ad friendship. Anyways dissecting ting is fun, only it can b a pain in d ass. These are potential times u culd be reading. What i do tho is: i attend 3 consecutive dissecting classes, then miss two. Dont blame, reading is also important if not more. Some ask, what is dissection for? U arent an anatomist (all doctors are meant to be) if u cant open a cadaver and precisely see and name diff structures of the body. How do u avoid d pudendal nerves when performing a surgical removal of sacrococcygeal teratoma without prior anatomical knowledge. How do u do a subclavian venous puncture when u dont knw where the subclavian vein is. That said, gross practical is very tiring, u leave exhausted and sleepy. No thanks to the sleep inducing formaldehyde used to preserve the cadavers. 6 - 7 pm Home sweet home. Sleep sweet sleep. Eat sweet eat. 8 - 12 pm (not strictly) Try to get a fast review of wats been taught in skul and read ahead of the next class 2 Likes |

TUESDAY 8 - 10 am GROSS ANATOMY LECTURE Yes gross again, U spend most of ur days in the preclinical college in the gross lecture theatre and gross practical lab. Its a normal quip in my school to ask: 'Na anatomy we com study for this school'. 10 am - 12 noon EMBRYOLOGY Also one of my favourite courses. Embryology is so TOUCHING. *Clears throats* ok bck to wat i was saying. In Embryology, u learn how the embryo grows in the uterus to become the fetus and how it is delivered. U even learn how the uterus prepares itself for implantation of the embryo. U are also given a brief description on the process of fertilzation and where it happens. Altho i will advise not to get so cozy abt embryology. It gets harder wen it gets to development of the systems. This is when u start learnin abt developement of each organs : heart, blood vessels (cardiovascular system), lungs, bronchi, trachea (resp system) etc.... 12 - 1 pm BREAK 2 - 6 pm GROSS ANATOMY PRACTICAL Ever seen and felt a uterus? I have *winks* 6 Likes |

WEDNESDAY 9am - 12am PHYSIOLOGY LECTURE I must av said a lot abt Phyiology but I tink its worth it cos u may find it hard to be a gud doctor if ur Physiology was shaky. Physiology lecturers to me are more likeable (might be biased) and dey tend to care abt u lykin d course. Anatomy no send u. So lectures are more interesting and student-friendly (if deres anyytiin lyk dat). 12am - 3pm PHYSIOLOGY PRACTICAL Physiology practical is more interesting and it has a plus of u not going home with ur lab coat smelling lyk Alani Eleran the butcher (No offence to Alani's in the house) after gross dissection. Nor will u go ohm scared of eating meat when u rememba the meat in ur soup luks lyk gluteus maximus (muscle of buttocks) u were cuttin in gross lab. Physiology practical is more interesting..and experiments are more clinically oriented. they include: *Determinin PCV and interpreting implication of result *Determinin Blood group of a patient *Determinin White blood cell count and using it as a guide to determine infection. *Urinalysis and Renal Dialysis *Carrying out an ECG (electrocardiography) *Using spirometry to determine respiratory diseases; Etc... 3pm - 11pm Home sweet home, eat sweet eat, read sweet read, sleep sweet sleep. 9 Likes 2 Shares |

Following bumper 2 bumper.. can relate with the cadeavar room feeling, I was still perceiving formalin at night after my 1st dissection on upper limb. Thank God am done with anatomy for good, too many stuffs to learn , read keith moore, charusia, snell, inderbir sigh, gray's anatomy textbooks just for gross anatomy in first semester 200l when we just started anatomy lectures, settled for grey later after becoming grounded on how to effectively study anatomy . .repping Medlab uniben .. 6 Likes |

Re: Drey's Anatomy: An Insight Into My First Preclinical Year by jargo89(m): 10:19pm On Nov 06, 2015 |
yungest: Both are very effective bt d major factor is finding out which is the school lects' favorite. Generally, essential physio is easier to understand and more reader friendly. Also superb for prep 4 essays. Disadv is dere are more mistakes, its more suitable for Indian schools as sum practicals are Indian-oriented. Also its values are berated by most lects. Guyton is voluminous bt superb for knowledge nd MCQs. Its values are highly regarded. It has less misstakes too. Main factor in choosin tho shld b ur lects' prefence. 1 Like |

FINgames:there is no hard and fast rule to how you can effectively study anatomy, different stroke for different folks . . first it depends on your lecturers, I studied their teaching methods to know what they want, there is a lecturer in my school, even if you read the whole of keith moore you will fail his questions cos they are directly from last and he expects your answers to be from last. . also individual pace at learning, I can't read a course just once and sit for the exam, so I try to cover up the course outline on time so that I can read it again well before exams, I read the general overview of the course, learn the osteology very well for gross.muscles, innervation and blood supply I leave for towards exam cos they are a must in the exam questions so it will still be fresh in my head. . remember we do semester exams in mls and other BMS dept so if you are in med or Dentistry where you will write all in one paper it will be a different ball game.. The best way is to know your lecturers especially the senior ones that set exam questions and ask from your senior colleagues, they are in the best position to put you through.. 5 Likes |

Demmieviere:Yes I go for holidays, altho technically there are no holidays in med school. When other paramedics are given weeks or months for vacation, med students are mainly given a week. And about me reading at home? Yes I do. Nd I tink I read more durin d holidays as there are no lectures to distract. As for the hostel issue; I tink it depends on the individual and to some extent the school. Some students find it hard readin with disturbances and dere will b lots in d hostel. Readin too may b affected as roomates may not b supportive of d light bein on durin night study. Where the school comes in is, for schools wit hostel subjected to med students exclusively, stayin in d hostel will b more tolerable. There is no hard and ffast rule, stayin in campus has it pros and cons. For example, stayin in the hostels makes it easier to participate in group studies, get to class earlier, get informations easily etc... 1 Like |
