The Issues Facing Us: Based on various studies, surveys and data available to us, we have nominated the critical issue facing our Region as that of survival and sustainability. In clear terms, a nationality that is constantly vulnerable to the vagaries of both political and economic changes; buffeted with serious security threats; has a sub-optimal and underperforming economy; battling with a weak social sector, especially education and health, unable to feed its population; cannot generate enough resources to finance its development; whose native language is fast disappearing; assailed by negative and uncontrolled net migration, with all the attendant consequences; cannot generate enough consensus and internal solidarity for moving forward on both basic and fundamental issues; sitting on a demographic time bomb, composed of a youthful population, largely misguided and misdirected, and therefore susceptible to misuse; and operating under an over-bearing, and sometimes uncooperative Federal Government; clearly needs to work hard for its survival and sustainability Source:DAWN Commision 2 Likes |

Personally I think more emphasis should be placed on how the private sector and individuals can drive the agriculture sector.I am realist in that I prefer solutions be proffered outside of the state especially where the state has shown itself to be incompetent as is the case in naija.Like Nigeria,Trinidad has placed a lot of her energy on oil and gas and we don't even feed ourselves. Our agriculture sector contributes very little to our gdp and we aren't self sufficient. Yet our local university produces several agriculture graduates. One of their major issues is land to start up a farm and labour...plenty trinis simply do not want to farm lol.My thing is aren't there Yoruba agriculture graduates?Find out what are the barriers to them farming. Is it access to land? Lack of labour? Just how Indians and outsiders invest in Naija and other african countries. Can't diasporas pool up their resources to say yo I'll invest in a palm plantation, snailery, rabbitry etc.How are the Indians and others able to get labour? I know a lady here in Trinidad who does skincare products using shea butter ,black soap etc...she works directly with farmers in Gambia. They supply raw material to her.She no be a rich person..she be a small business. My thing is though the government needs to straighten up but if more ppl choose to invest like outsiders do...it would help. Before solutions are proffered though...y'all should find out exactly what are the issues. 3 Likes |

Aareonakakanfo:This is another major problem... EDUCATION Our children are no longer going to school. Those who attend, stop at the secondary school level especially when they fail jamb/p.jamb in 2/3 attempts, the next thing they impregnate(boys)/ get pregnant (girls). When you mention the word "tout" - You know what comes to mind.. Only 2 types of parents push their children to school:: 1. Those who are learned and it is like an abomination for their children not to go to school and even exceed the height they've attained. 2. Those who are not learned and are full of regrets, they work very hard to ensure their children surpass that height they wish they attained.. Yes, our education system is not encouraging at all, a lot of children don't even know why they are in school.. 1 Like |

shizzy7: This is why i said all South-west governors should have something in place for youths who fall into this category. They can learn vocations if they don't succeed in education. After they're done with it,they should be funded to start their own businesses.Aregbesola did something like that in Osun state.O-REAP and O-YES.bbeautiful ideas i must say but i don't know how far with it If na you fail jamb 3 times, you no go fool around? |

quimicababes: Barriers: Education & Pride that comes with education. I think [and I may be wrong] that Awolow's free education promised a vision brighter than agbe [farming]. Some Yoruba parents be like "Did I send you to school to learn how to be a farmer?" 1 Like |

IlekeHD: I am speaking about the agriculture graduates. Are you saying they don't want to farm? Are you saying all just want to be in agriculture research offices and never in the field? I am speaking about the ones who want to farm...what are the barriers? My thing is focus on those who want to farm and children that shows an interest. How come outsiders are able to get African labour on their farms? What are they doing? Is it they are paying them a living wage or something? I ask because sadly agriculture also pay low wages for field workers. 1 Like |

quimicababes: I know what you meant.......still to them, agricultural graduate equates to farming. Although many do go for the degree, but in Nigeria's plain, there's scarcity of jobs available for it. That's why I keep telling Yorubas to create agricultural startup businesses. Unfortunately, Africans are attacted to foreign-owned companies, regardless of the wages. 1 Like |

To those clamouring for private sector driven agriculture: not everything is about private sector. Agriculture is one of those sectors where the government has to be at the centre/nucleus. The government owns the land in a country and the government represents the people. And for agriculture to thrive it has to be government driven - unless you want to create another problem entirely. Even in all the countries in the West, where capitalism is at its peak - the government drives agriculture, hence they offer all kinds of subsidies and grants to farmers. The only countries where agriculture is private sector driven are third world countries, hence those countries are as backward as they're. A classic example is Rwanda and all those African countries selling their lands to foreigners. You lot need to slow down on this craze about capitalism and injecting the private sector into everything. Not everything is about the private sector - there has to be a balance. 1 Like |

IlekeHD: It matters not what non-agriculture people think.I am thinking if you pursued some kind of agriculture training ..no it be because you have a passion for it? Agriculture is a field...all can't be in the office nor does all want to be in the office.A lot of agriculture graduates I know want their own farms but the cost of land is a huge barrier. Why not empower those who are interested in farming but because of land issues they can't afford it o.Not all farmers own the land but farmland on lease. If land is the issue...perhaps diasporas who have access to land or can buy land can set up co-operatives where the land is leased to those graduates at a reasonable price. If it be fertilizers...why not educate them on organic farming etc especially as that's where the world is heading.Even in terms of mechanization...Asia uses low tech for their farming and they are able to feed themselves and export. No everything have to be about mechanization. Aren't there different levels of agriculture training in terms of certificate, diploma etc...may times some of those graduates feed into field workers. I know the oyo governor was complaining the youths aren't willing to farm...but are they paying the youths a living wage? Tony emumelu released the list of their teep 2015 entrepreneurs and quite a bit of them were yorubas and many were agriculture/agribusiness start-ups.My thing is if the government is not giving those folks much support can't diasporas act as investors in those folks start-ups etc.Naija case also is the youths who are trying get very little to no support. Eh...my philosophy is focus on those trying especially to ensure they don't lose it. 2 Likes |

Aareonakakanfo: Isn't the meagre oil money the same reason why some of these lazy folks like "one-Nigeria"? How much do they even get from the oil? They all shared N300 billion last month. That's about £1 billion. How can you even develop and run a country of over 180 million heads with something as small as that? Bear in mind that 50% of the money will be looted, while 30% will go to recurrent expenditure - with only 20% left for the people. You can make over 10x in other sectors if these folks can leave the oil alone and diversify the economic. London (not the UK) generates over 20x what the whole Nigeria shared last month, monthly from banking alone. And that's just a city. The South South folks need to take their oil and keep it to themselves - and let's see if these folks won't get busy. 4 Likes |

Shymm3x: I get ur point but what are you supposed to do if ur government is clueless? The least you can do is ensure that the private sector is the natives and not outsiders lol |
Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by Shymm3x: 6:46pm On Nov 04, 2015 |
shizzy7: It's just a pity that the government doesn't help farmers in Nigeria. However, if you can invest in farming - your head is in the right place. Some of the richest folks in the UK are farmers and they don't live in the city. They just stay in their villages and make millions of pounds. |

Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by Shymm3x: 6:57pm On Nov 04, 2015 |
quimicababes: Even if the natives are allowed to form the private sector - the overall control/regulation has to be done by the government. Agriculture is basically just like education, resources of a country, defence (military) etc. assets the state must control. The onus will always be on the government. |
