Madam, teaching and discipline go together ma. You can't teach a child without disciplining. This can't be left to you alone except you are your kids' teacher.

And I agree..

However disciplining does not mean "Cane".. Google it.

Discipline my kid all you want, just don't use a cane or your hands on my child.

Thanks.

When a teacher disciplines a child....it is not done out of wickedness or hatred.... but out of love to make the child a better person.I can count the no of times I was flogged in sec school...maybe twice.Train your child that even teachers won't have reasons to beat him.

If you have experienced extreme beating while in school,

The truth is every child listens, at least from my experience. If you start correcting them from a young age and teaching them obedience, then you wouldn't have issues.

But some parents, when their children do something wrong they just look away and say oh he's just a child. The child grows up thinking its alright, or I can get away with certain things. Then the parent suddenly thinks you can flog the bad behaviour out of the child after he or she is grown... It doesn't work that way.

There's a woman that has just one daughter, the girl is rude, she's only 3, and its very easy for you to overlook it, she just keeps going ah omode ni, ko month (she's a child she doesn't know) if her mum has an argument with anybody in the area, If the daughter sees the person she'll just eye you and walk away, and the mum won't scold her. I can imagine when she's like 8-10 her mum will now carry cane saying she's teaching her to be respectful, when she's already failed now.

What do u mean by that? This is how all these new generation mothers spoil their children. They dont have respect for their elders, even to greet is a big problem. I wonder what their product would be in d near future.

Not disciplining a child in abroad is wat. causes a teenager or a young adult to walk into cinema and starts shooting innocent people just because he was offended......and vice versa is why we still have a bit of control and security in Africa. #just saying

Believe me you hit it right where it pleases me

Sometimes I wonder why people major on minors, I know schools where cane isn't used and I know 89% of these schools breed miscreants.

If you've never been in the edu line or you don't have proper up bringing you won't know what it is to beat or not beat a child am sure teachers are made to know beating is just 1 of the 100000000 alternatives but shouldn't be overlooked when necessary. I pray we don't have to beat our kids when they are adults.

You don't have to be a teacher to be wicked or to be sadistic in nature.we have ppl who are naturally wicked ...we have them as teachers,as nurses ...even as parents.Train your child in such a way that when he gets out...you'll get positive feedback.

I will not spare the rod with my child, understand me. I don't want anyother person physically assulting my child. If he does something wrong, let the teacher talk to me and i will punish my child MYSELF. either with cane, belt or whatever. Some teachers dont know a childs medical history, some might be epileptic, some have sickle cell and so on. Parents should be the ones to flog their children, the teachers job is to report to the parents. If the childs behaviour doesnt change in schoo, then the school has the right to expel the child. I repeat, CORPORATE PUNISHMENT IN SCHOOLS HAS LED TO ACTUAL STUDENT DEATHS, NIGERIAN SCHOOLS SHOULD STOP IT!!!!!!!

Its 1/1000 cases, if yu are so wealthy to send your kids to the very sophisticated schools, all about your kids -medical, special care to be taken is in his/her file.

the truth remains that a mother can NEVER do it perfectly well ALONE. wonder why rich people kids waste away in foreign schools.

All the private schools that fees are in hundreds of thousands neither beat or fail a child because any parent that can afford 500k a term can send any teacher to kiri kiri.

if you, its not the best but whatever rocks your boat, i would wish the way you treat your child never come come back to hurt you later in life--correction is a part of childs upbringing , its not hatred

Good luck

Can you please define the words "archaic" and "culture"?

If you can't explain both words and show how African cultures and traditions are archaic, you would have only ended up disgracing yourself here.

Pick up a dictionary. It's not my fault you're an illiterate.

2nd part:
I'll indulge you even though you have the intellectual capabilities of a monkey. Studies have shown that hitting kids may lower their IQs, yet you chimps still want to do it all in the name of "culture".

You morons never sit back and re-evaluate the beliefs you hold. You do things just because it has "culture" stamped on it. To loosely quote Nietzsche, doing virtues and duties just for their own sake is dangerous. The average IQ in Africa is a 69 according to the works of Jensen, and you people do little to disprove that.

If you say we Africans are monkeys and chimps, I'm glad to tell you, I'm a big gorilla myself!

Obviously you are the one of the few Africans with a low IQ, because you can't see beyond your nose. White or black, there is no difference.

Africans have the lowest IQ?!! According to who; a white man?? grin grin grin This got me cracking.

For the record, IQ isn't the true test of an individual's intelligence, rather how creative his or her mind is; that is what makes an individual standout from the crowd. Do well to look it up on the internet.

BTW, while checking the internet, do well to look up the several accomplishments of Africans all over the world.

We Africans are unique, our cultures and traditions set us apart because we have a very rich heritage.

Why am I even wasting my time telling you all these; from your personal text and signature, it is pointless arguing with and explaining the African culture to someone filled with hate of himself.

I'm am an African. I am black and proud

Thanks for this.

Saved me a lot of typing
.
MadCow1:

Lol..

I will point out some flaws or oversights in your post.

1. Teachers indeed do have their Kids and all worth not, however that does not mean they will immediately translate into good disciplinarian. I belong to the generation that grew up under this flogging culture. We got flogged for all sorts. For coming late, doing poorly on a test, improper dressing, speaking vanacular in school, not cutting our nails, fighting, e.t.c. Infact there were only about 4 forms of punishment in school and they go thus;

1. Flogging

2. Kneeling, squatting our some other form of painful and dehumnizing exercise.

3. Cutting grass

4. Suspension

5. Expulsion.

Flogging being the obvious choice for most. Well, I feel it's wrong. African kids are never given the chance to even explain why something is the way it is. Once the teacher sees something wrong, it's the cane that is the obvious solution. I went through junior school being scared for my life. That fear translated into my school work. It didn't matter how much I got flogged, I just could never pass some subjects that easily especially mathematics and how could I? When I am seated in a class with 50+ other students, being taught by a teacher who just breezes through the course like everyone learns at the same pace and then sets this ridiculous tests and expects us all to pass.

Imagine a case where 95% of the class flunked a test and we all got whipped for failing. Not a single blame was passed to the teacher.

Now in the Nigerian education system, what room has been created for students (like me) who suffer from one form of learning disability? My younger brother also suffers from an attention deficit disorder and was failing badly whilst in Nigeria until he moved overseas where his teachers spotted the problem. And they were only able to spot this problem because they were just a handful in the class. And when they did, they didn't correct it with a cane, they fashioned out a way to keep him learning and enjoying it. He told me of a teacher who would even let him leave the class for a bit and return to continue learning.

I was flogged like a thief by our music teacher because I kept missing the keys during music practice. Well guess what, the fhucking piano was made of wood built by a carpenter. The fhucking piano replica produced no sounds whatsoever. And then when I am called to play a note a fail, I get a ruler hit hard against my fingers. Our music teacher broke that wooden "made in Calabar" ruler against someone's fingers. Imagine the force required to break that ruler and wonder what that person who got struck felt. Needless to say, I hate music till this day..

2. Please drop this overseas gun crazed violence excuse. You can't sit here in Africa and fully grasp the problems with the U.S.. (Note, the gun violence in schools is mostly prevalent in the U.S and not the entire west). How many school shootings have you heard of in the U.K or in Canada or Australia or New Zealand or France or Netherlands, e.t.c.. The issue in the U.S is that the guns are just too fhucking many and the gun laws are lax. You can work into a Walmart and buy a gun like it was groceries. The children are also not protected from guns in the homes and some parents even start teaching their kids how to handle a weapon from a very early age.

But slow down a minute, don't we have gun issues in Nigerian School's? All these cultism issues in our tertiary institutions nko? Are those not the same kids raised under the stick you are clamouring for? So if the children we are raising with sticks still grow up to become hardened cultists that shoot people up, hack them to pieces and stuff, why then are we quick to point fingers at the U.S? Or because CNN no dey report our own? grin

So you see.. Flogging is not the solution.

Plus why does the only form of punishment used the most by teachers involves beating children with a stick? undecided Can't we think of a less destructive means to punish erring students?

3. The Bible said spare the rod and Spoil the child.. Fine, the bible says a whole lot more and I will show you one amongst others;

Deut 21: 18 “If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them, 19 then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city. 20 And they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ 21 Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; pso you shall put away the evil from among you, qand all Israel shall hear and fear.

I guess we should also start stoning our rebellious kids to death as well na.

Let's get serious, these are not biblical times. Child psychology has been studied and we know more today about kids than the Biblical era people ever did.

Again.. I am not against disciplining my child, but when it involves using a rod, let me the parent handle that. You can give the child detention, menial labour and other non contact forms of punishment, but let the parents take sole responsibility for whipping their kids.

That is the truth in a nutshell. Nigerian teachers and parents simply know no other form but beating.

Also many people who beat while being unfair or just because they are high on their adult free to beat position don't know how they impact that youngsters view of authority and quickly expose the often unfair and childish nature of those that give it out and get some sick pleasure from the 'privilege'.

It has not worked on Nigerians just look around you. The country is churning out emotionally ill-equipt people who are constantly in a state of high blood pressure and five seconds away from slapping or threatening to slap someone.

I've been in Nigeria little over a week now and everyday there is shouting and aggression at least once and it seems very crazy when you live in the western world and see this once in a while there.

You expect that temperament from those on the edges of society but it could be the cab driver, policeman, politician or business woman. Many Nigerians generally have anger issues and don't really know how to handle situations they don't like except through irrational anger and aggression.

Since you're an educator, let me ask you some questions.

1) Do you have kids of your own? If yes, how often do you flog them?
2) which class do you teach?
3) how close are you to your students?

There's more power in caring about a student (even if you only pretend to) than holding the cane over them. The concern of disappointing someone is far more effective than the fear of punishment from my experience.

3. The Bible said spare the rod and Spoil the child.. Fine, the bible says a whole lot more and I will show you one amongst others;

Lol..

I will point out some flaws or oversights in your post.

1. Teachers indeed do have their Kids and all worth not, however that does not mean they will immediately translate into good disciplinarian. I belong to the generation that grew up under this flogging culture. We got flogged for all sorts. For coming late, doing poorly on a test, improper dressing, speaking vanacular in school, not cutting our nails, fighting, e.t.c. Infact there were only about 4 forms of punishment in school and they go thus;

1. Flogging

This is too simple an issue to allow to drag to and fro, let the parents who are all knowing, who know so much about child psychology handle the cognitive and psychomotor aspects as well. As if we didn't go to school. Throughout my years in school, I can count on my fingers the number of times I was beaten. All I am saying is teachers are not wicked as people are painting them to be.

Av not finished, something needs my attention, will return shortly.
