Located just 134 kilometres from Santiago and with lots to offer in terms of hotels, cuisine, shopping and sightseeing, Vina del Mar is one of Chile’s main tourist destinations. Dotted along the local coastline are more than ten beaches and the Parque Borde Costero promenade, which covers an area of nearly 15,000 square metres and comprises a large number of green areas.

A mere ten minutes from the city centre lies the National Botanical Park, which is open to the public. Its 40 hectares are home to more than three thousand species of flowers and over 50 species of birds, and the park is just one of the reasons why Vina del Mar is known as “The Garden City”.

The sandy dunes and the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean also make for a fascinating and contrasting landscape on Concon Beach, which offers peace, tranquility and gorgeous views.

Places of interest
The residence of the city’s founder, La Quinta Vergara is a large and beautiful park that is now open to the public. Its lush gardens boast a wide variety of plants and flowers, collected by the Vergara family on their trips to Asia, Europe and Australia.

The park also comprises the Palacio Vergara, which houses the Museum of Fine Arts and an open-air amphitheatre that stages the Vina del Mar International Song Festival, the largest of its kind in Latin America.

Opened in 1930, the Casino de Vina is one of the city’s landmarks and one of the best equipped casinos in the world. The building now has a modern and stylish five-star hotel with restaurants that reflect the sheer variety of dishes on offer in a city that looks out to the sea.

One of Vina del Mar’s most distinctive districts, Sausalito is the location of the city’s football stadium, which is named after the suburb it is situated in. The stadium is flanked by a beautiful lake that was formerly known as La Hacienda reservoir, built at a time when water was in short supply.

Football
Local club Everton FC were founded the afternoon of 24 June 1909 by a group of students driven by their passion for sport and its values and ideals. Holding their first board meeting that very day, they decided to name the new institution in honour of the famous English club, who had just completed an outstanding tour of Argentina. With eight league titles now to their name, Everton are Chile’s eighth-most successful club.

 Three weeks ago, 24 teams from six confederations arrived in South America to contest the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015. Fifty-two matches later it has been confirmed that an African side will definitely lift the trophy, while Belgium and Mexico will seek to end their campaign on a high note by winning bronze before the tournament showpiece gets underway. FIFA.com looks ahead to the final day of competition.

Two teams from the same confederation will go toe-to-toe in the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup for the first time in 22 years and ten editions of the tournament, after CAF sides Ghana and Nigeria met in the final back in 1993. The Golden Eaglets secured the second of their four World Cup crowns with a 2-1 victory that day. “It’s very important for African football and incredible that something like this has only happened once before,” said Nigeria’s Orji Okwonkwo in eager anticipation of this continental showdown, where the record champions could become the second team to defend their title on Sunday evening after Brazil triumphed in 1997 and 1999.

Although the Nigerians have ample experience of these showdowns, Sunday night’s game will mark the first time a Malian side has reached the final of any FIFA tournament. After the country’s third-place finish at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand a few weeks ago, coach Bayer Ba’s squad have gone one step further in Chile. “Let me tell you straight: you build up an appetite by eating,” he explained before the last four. Mali’s passage to the final has surely increased this hunger even further.

While Nigeria hold a clear lead in the head-to-head record between the two nations’ senior sides with four wins, three draws and just one defeat to their name, Mali have the edge when it comes to youth football. When hosting the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 1999, the Golden Eaglets were forced to throw in the towel in the quarter-finals as Les Aiglonnets beat them 3-1.

Match for third place
Belgium-Mexico, Vina Del Mar, 16.00 (local time)

The track records of these two teams could hardly be more different ahead of their first meeting at youth level. In one corner stand the Belgians, who have already exceeded all expectations. After qualifying for the Round of 16 as one of the best third-place group finishers, the Europeans improved from one match to the next and proved to be worthy adversaries to Mali in the last four.

Waiting in the other corner are the Mexicans, who have just lost a FIFA U-17 World Cup semi-final for the first time after becoming champions in 2011 and contesting the decider two years ago. El Tri were defeated 4-2 by Nigeria in one of the most exciting matches of this tournament in Chile – but the result could easily have been different. “Both teams had chances. Unfortunately we didn’t score, Nigeria did. This was the difference – but that’s football,” coach Mario Arteaga said succinctly after the game.

Player to watch
Dante Rigo (Belgium)

Les Diablotins’ midfielder moved up into top gear in the knockout stages to become one of the main contributors to Belgium’s first semi-final appearance at a FIFA U-17 World Cup. He shone as a provider of goals in the 2-0 win over Korea Republic before scoring to give his side a 1-0 lead in both their 1-0 triumph over Costa Rica and their 3-1 defeat by Mali. Although his strike was ultimately not enough against the African champions, Rigo and the rest of Bob Browaeys’ squad have had plenty to celebrate during their time in Chile.

3 – While it seems almost certain that Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen will collect the adidas Golden Boot as best goalscorer of the tournament with nine strikes so far, a head-to-head battle has emerged for the lower steps on this particular podium. The Golden Eaglets’ Kelechi Nwakali and Samuel Chukwueze, Mali’s Sidiki Maiga and Belgian Rigo are all tied on three goals each with one game left to play. Currently ahead of this quartet with four goals is Germany’s Johannes Eggestein, whose team were eliminated by Croatia in the Round of 16.

MALI PROFILE

The past
Mali enjoyed a run of their only three appearances at the finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup consecutively, starting in 1997 and ending in 2001, but since then they have been absent from the showpiece event. In 1997 Les Aiglonnets were only denied a place in the semi-finals by a penalty shoot-out against Germany when Seydou Keita, who went on to win international fame and played for clubs like Marseille, Barcelona and Roma, missed his side's fifth penalty. Two years later they crashed out in the first round, but in the 2001 edition they again came agonizingly close to a place amongst the top four, but were denied by Argentina, who won 2-1 after extra-time.

The present
Mali only qualified for the finals of the African championships due to an administrative mistake made by Benin, who fielded four ineligible players in the first round of qualifying. But in Niger, the Malians had few problems, topping their group after victories against Cameroon (3-1) and Côte d'Ivoire (1-0) and drawing with South Africa (2-2). That saw them secure their ticket to Chile, but there was more on offer as they beat Guinea 2-1 in the semi-finals and outplayed South Africa to win their first-ever continental trophy with a 2-0 victory in the final match.

The future
The success in Niger brought on huge celebrations back home with the country's president leading the way, saying: "I am proud of these young players who planted the Malian flag on the roof of Africa during the competition.” The whole country is now looking for more success in Chile and coach Baye Bah has said that they will go to South America to valiantly defend African football. “We will respect all our opponents, but our goal is to go as far as possible. My players have the determination to compete in the semi-final or even the final of the World Cup.”

The past
The only word to describe Nigeria's past in the FIFA U-17 World Cup is glorious. No other country has won the tournament as often as the Golden Eaglets (four times) and only Brazil can match their seven semi-final appearances. Remarkably, the team has made it through to the decider every time they advanced to the last four. The west Africans won the inaugural competition in China PR in 1985 and added titles in 1993, 2007 and last time out. They lost the 1987, 2001 and 2009 finals. The only time they qualified for the global event but failed to progress out of the group stage was in 2003, when they were denied a place in the last eight by the drawing of lots after finishing equal on points, goals and goal difference with Costa Rica.

The present
As overwhelming pre-tournament favourites the Golden Eaglets had an easy passage into the last four at the African championships, thereby booking their place in Chile 2015. Victories over hosts Niger (2-0) and Zambia (3-1) and a 1-1 draw against Guinea saw them top the group. However, in the semi-finals, the west Africans were stunned by an impressive South African team, who grabbed a first-half goal and then held on to their win. And though Nigeria lost the play-off for third place against Guinea 3-1, coach Emmanuel Amuneke said they had achieved their objective and would expect to be at their best in the world finals.

The future
Surprisingly, the Golden Eaglets have been more successful on the global stage than in Africa. It is not something that surprises Amuneke, who says that the conditions at the World Cup are more suitable to his side but has naturally been focused on hsi young team. ”For us to be champions of the world, we have to prepare very well. We have been trying to correct some of the mistakes and lapses we noticed in Niger.”

Champions:
In an all-African showdown in Asia, Nigeria overcame Ghana in the Final to take the laurels at Japan '93. The Golden Eaglets stood out from start to finish, their outstanding physique, impeccable sense of organisation and progressive tactics combining to make them the most feared team in the tournament. Having future stars of the calibre of Wilson Oruma (top scorer in the competition), Nwankwo Kanu, Peter Anosike, Ibrahim Babangida and Celestine Babayaro at their disposal certainly helped too. Nigeria's 8-0 thrashing of poor Canada at the start of the proceedings set the tone; South American giants Argentina hardly fared much better, going down 4-0, and then it was the turn of Australia (2-0), Japan (2-1) and Poland (2-1) to suffer at the hands of the all-conquering Nigerians. Ghana were the last hurdle, and a 2-1 win in the Final was enough to send the Golden Eaglets flying home with the coveted trophy safely in their grasp.

Surprises:
This tournament belonged to Africa, as two teams from the same continent faced each other in the Final for the first time in FIFA history. The difference between the two African giants was Nigeria's extra ruthlessness in front of goal. One of the most heart-warming moments in FIFA history came at the medal ceremony, as the two sides climbed the podium together to applaud the fans. Unforgettable...

Chile came from nowhere to clinch third place, showing admirable faith in the 4-4-2 formation devised for them by coach Leonardo Véliz. Frank Lobos, Hector Tapia, Manuel Neira and Sebastian Rozental all shone as they took second spot in Group D, before rolling over the Czech and Slovak Republic in the quarters. Ghana proved a step too far, but the penalty shoot-out victory over European Champions Poland in the third place play-off was far more than Chile could have hoped for at the outset.

Player of the Tournament:
For once, the adidas Golden Ball did not go to a member of the winning side. Ghana's Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Daniel Addo was the young recipient, his natural athleticism and buckets of speed helping him to excel. And his visible enjoyment at getting in on the scoring act must have swayed the judges too. His three goals were invaluable to his team's progress, as was the support of team-mates Sebastian Barnes and Michael Edusei, who made the Team of the Tournament alongside him.
