scholes0:Oh no, I am Igbo but those words you posted didn't mean anything at all maybe to the igbos in your enclave but for us in the east, they are meaningless. Just a bunch of Yoruba Lingo's known in the southwest. You guys need to travel out of your comfort zone instead of making up meaningless assumptions based on what you seeon the internet. Onijagidijagan:Your arguments lack bases premises and conclusions. The bolded means what exactly That Igbos in southwest are pushing Yoruba's aside or what? Enough of all these armchair propaganda. Seeing Igbos in Yorubaland does not mean that all Igbos are in Southwest or are conversant with the language and culture. The large number of Igbos in the northern part of Nigeria cannot be compared with those in the southwestern part, the decrease was as a result of the rise of insurgency in the north. 1 Like |

funmijoyb: To be honest, most of these words you've mentioned are used in Pidgin English and not in Igbo language. Some of these words you've mentioned are barely even used in pidgin English: words like oja for market. When speaking Igbo, Igbos have their equivalent for these words. And Oyibo should not be on your list. You are claiming an Igbo word, a word used by the Igbos since 1700s or before and well-documented, as Yoruba. To educate you: 1.Oyinbo Igbo: Oyibo 2. Akata Igbo: Akata 3.Ogbeni Igbo: Nwoke m 4.Ashewo Igbo: Akwuna 5.Wahala Igbo: Nsogbu 6.Abi Igbo: Okwia 7.Shebi Igbo: Okwia 8.Pele; Igbo: Ndo 9.Omo; Igbo: Nwa 10.Oja; Igbo: Afia/Ahia 11.Shey Igbo: Gboo? 12.Mumu Igbo: Onye Nzuzu 13, Ode Igbo: Onuku A possible origin of Akata in Igbo: Igbos often refer to someone who is rough, tough/stubborn or tough body resulting from maturity as 'onye katalu aru', most likely giving birth to 'akata'. You see a more similar meaning between akata Igbo and the general conception of African Americans as quite strong-headed or tough people. 5 Likes |

macof: That was a mistake. I meant 'akamu' for pap in Igbo, and I have corrected my post. Small in Igbo has several words: obele, nwobele, nwantinti, nwantii, nwantakili, mpe etc. Love Nwantinti is from a popular Igbo long song, Love Nwantinti, of old (80s or so) that I grew up hearing as a child: 'Love Nwantinti Love Nwantinti, Ije mu na love bu na o fodulu nwantinti'. 'tini tini' could also mean small in Yoruba but 'LOve nwantinti' proper as a phrase is of Igbo origin. 'Love wan tin tin' in Yoruba usage is only of usage after the phrase became popular in Nigerian usage. The Igbo evidence is even apparent in the nwa/wan in 'love wan tin tin'. Obodo oyibo is a common Igbo phrase commonly used in Nigerian lingo or pidgin English. 4 Likes |

bigfrancis21: Since d birth of d first albino in yorubaland, Oyinbo has been used to desicribe them. you are foolish if u claim oyinbo/oyibo and Akata are igbo words for any reason. Akata is a wild cat and Olongbo is d domestic cat. your claims are not geniune. it has direct meaning in our language for gosh sake. yorubas documents their words way better than igbo does. 1.That's why ur people claims Lagos, Ibadan and Akure are Igboland. which brought all d problems u r facing today. 2. Also claiming ikweres, Ijaw, Itsekiris are all igbo because of crude oil Claiming everything, you igbos are funny thiefs. This words are not yours. 4 Likes |

Onijagidijagan: Lol. No Igbo person would claim Ibadan and Akure as Igboland. In fact, I have never seen that happen before. Ikwerres are an Igbo group, they called themselves Igbo and it is only after the civil war that the denial started mainly due to oil politics. Igbos have never claimed Ijaws or Itsekiris, those are two distinct groups from the Igbos. I mentioned previously that Oyibo is Igbo and Oyinbo is Yoruba just as Gini is to Igbo and Kini is to Yoruba. You can claim Oyinbo, which is Yoruba pronunciation but do not claim Oyibo. Just because gini and kini sound alike and mean the same thing doesn't mean you will claim kini and gini as yoruba words. In Igboland, so many people bear Oyibo as name, my grandmother being an example. Oyibo is a popular word all over southern Nigeria, only the Yorubas call it 'oyinbo'. Never be too sure that Yorubas have been using the word since time immemorial just because you were born into a time when it was already being used does not mean that it was used last century or 2 centuries before. Documented evidence exists that shows the Igbo usage of Oyibo in an interior village in Igboland at about the 1700s (Olaudah Ikwuano, an ex-Igbo slave and the first Igbo and Nigerian to publish a book). 8 Likes |

macof: The Tintin is borrowed from Igbo (Love Nwantinti) and that is a fact Nelly Uchendu sang a song Love Nwa nti nti. This was a while back. It was a hit nation wide and Love nwa nti nti (small small love/Infatuation) became part of mainstream pidgin. Since then, countless artiste's have sang about it ; Omawumi (of recent), Obiwon, Sam Cole, Casandra to name just a few. Some Yoruba's (maybe because of accent) have a habit of putting an "n" at the end of a word if you tell Ebonyi state, they will spell it as Ebonyin (put an 'N' at the end) Bigfrancis21 described it as nasalization of words in some other threads. Well, it is the same thing that is happening here. You say Love nwa nti nti, they hear Love nwa tin tin. Heck, some even pronounce/write the nwa as wan (moving the n to the end of the word), resulting in wan tin tin (an even bigger corruption of the original phrase). If people are going to appropriate a word, they should be ready to give credit where credit is due. Otherwise it becomes Language theft. But like I have been saying in this thread, once it becomes mainstream pidgin, some Yoruba's claim it as Yoruba, which is wrong 9 Likes 1 Share |

Uhhh! I don't know why i always follow a discussion when the thread has already been concluded. Anyway, the OP is just being delusional. No igbo person claims those yoruba words to be Igbo. But come to think of it, Igbos based in the East have no knowledge of most of those words in the Op's list. Those of us that were born and bred in the East find Yoruba rather harsh and unappealing, that is the genesis of the N-gbati reference of yoruba language. By now,you should know that only igbos that travel out pick yoruba and hausa languages for survival and business reasons. There are igbo equivalents of those words in Igboland. By the way, just like my people have said, words like Egusi, Oyibo, Okro, Ugu, Akamu etc all Igbo words. Or do you want to forcefully adopt them? Lol. 8 Likes |
