That statement leaves a lot to be imagined. If a teacher flogged your daughter, would you instigate her to lie that he raped her? Some people dey sha! And on mothers' day, everyone would tie gele.

Don't intentionally tell grave lies on another, let alone instigate a little child to do so.

If you hold no remorse that this same daughter may one day tell grave lies on you, or another child tell damaging about you, you should at least note that encouraging a child to tell grievous lie on an innocent man may irreparably damage the young mind forever.

And she may grow to gravely detest the upbringing and the upbringer...

Why form pity on poor people when you can do worse than poverty to a man's soul? Or would you say you don't know what possible extent false accusations can do to an innocent man and his innocent family?
Hey stag, longest time. I didn't know you do come this way too. I miss your stories sha cheesy

I used to buy some personal stuff there especially my Victoria secret since I wasn't sure of getting them anywhere else and other house hold produce.
Over here the price difference isn't much.

maybe you are correct based on other products that I'm not familiar with. Can't argue with your experience.

But by my personal experience, they didn't cheat me if I do the naira-dollar conversion.
If I go back to Nigeria now. I'll still shop there unless there's no shoprite around where I find myself at that time.

I just get tired of people badmouthing them when I don't even see what exactly they've done wrong.

Do you know your local stores that we are vouching for will charge you excess for drinks (as in Fanta and Coke and star) and still want you to return their bottle or you'll pay more than the actual drink cost for one bottle? angry
Then you'd have to buy a crate of drink for like 2,700 and deposit 2,500 for the bottles in the crate; only refundable after you've returned their bottles.

Not only are such things way cheaper in shoprite, they don't hassle you to pay for recycle materials like bottles. Because of their size, they can sell locally made goods at cheaper prices to the indigenes while our local store is trying to make all the profit to pay rent and kids school fees from one bag of rice and a carton of Indomie.

That's just one example.

coogar:

cos i see products of £1 store everywhere in shoprite. no one ever said the products aren't good but the mark-up price is ridiculous. selling products that shouldn't be more than N400 at N8,000 is a disgrace.

those asians know nigerians have a penchant for foreign products, they buy in bulk at the pound stores, ship it down to lagos & sell at 2000% profit. the value is way less than what nigerians are willing to pay.

some people are dying of hunger and poverty, while some has the whole of Nigeria in their palm. imagine the money that can feed thousands of people in only one person's account. the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. God help us all

Hmm! Good point you have there!
Nigerians are the architects of their own problems.

What's the way forward now? I think giving anonymously is the only way, and as suggested by one of the posts above yours, people should try and reach out to the needy this Christmas season, and I think with their identities hidden it will prevent anyone from saying their fortunes are being used or taken in exchange for help given.

Since the day I saw the pictures of a girl hawking on one leg, a man sweeping without hands, (think he later got some help)and another man washing car for a living right here on nairaland, there has not been a week that I did not think about how our societies need to do more, and what I can do.

bettercreature:
Nigeria is not a place you can just buy things and give the needy or homeless people anyhow
It wont be long before they accuse you of using their fortune for money ritual
Not that most people are not ready to help the needy but Nigeria is complicated
Imagine giving out 50naira to the homeless man under the bridge but he later went ahead to sell your 50naira at the rate of 1000naira to those who need it for money ritual to use your fortune

It's a pity that only a few Nigerians care about the person next door, its all man for himself.

We need to change...
The Nigerian people are leaving their value system everyday and all thanks to Capitalism cum democracy and the so called civilization we all yearn for .

You want to become a civilized nation ,you've got to pay the price and this is part of it .

My own problem is even on the cost of university these days.
Lots of girls do all sorts of things to train themselves. To feed and pay fees is a big problem.
I know of one that sleeps with a neighbour just to eat. I wonder how many more she sleeps with to pay her exorbitant school fees. I liked her cos she is so humble and down to earth. I was happy when she came to me for internship. I tried all I could to get her internship and to God be the glory, she didn't just get internship, she got a job. Now she doesn't have any reason not to graduate as the pay is more than enough to take her through. If I catch her again jumping trousers.......
more blessings, stories like this makes ma day,Its very saddening when you render lil helps, and the recipients goes outa their ways thanking, and showering praises,it makes me feel embarrassed,it only shows the level of poverty and lack,as odd as it sounds I love to give than to receive,I once gave out ma last penny, ended up going to bed hungry and I was wondering why I couldn't decline, almost concluded it wasn't normal of me,but the satisfaction on peoples faces does it for me,I won't even wait to hear a thank you,the world will be better with your kinds, may the good lord prosper the works of your hands, and to others out there too who puts peoples wants before theirs.

I was really into your story until I remembered this monicker. It was you who said you would encourage your daughter to falsely accuse any male teacher if he ever flogged her. Whatever the 'false accusations' means.

If I'm correct that you said those on the thread about teachers on FP today, then this story of yours just lost flavor.
To intentionally accuse an innocent person is callous, totally evil and cowardly. You boldly said you'd instigate your daughter to lie on an innocent person and here you are writing like a soft hearted saint.

I'm sure all those liking your post didn't read that you have the mind to conceive really unfair thoughts towards another human.

Wow. One person, two faces. The heart of man.....

If there's something that gives me joy in life, it when I help in in my little way. Givers absolutely never lack.Life is beautiful when we help those around us . Sometimes I always winder what it will be like to have millions in my account, I may not even be happy, There remains a void in my heart when I see people living in abject poverty.

I have a true story to tell.
I happened to meet a young girl if about 12 while in school. I came home from lectures to see her moving around my hostel. I asked why she was there and she told me she needed to see one of my hostel mates who obviously is not around. From the disappointment on her face, I asked her if everything was fine. She narrated to me a story about how hungry her family was, and the fact that her mom sent her out to borrow money from my mate. I asked her to take me to her mother. It was an uncompleted building and I didn't know how somebody can live in that kind of place with grasses everywhere. I feared for snake bites as I approached the mother.I gave her quite a fairly good sum and told her not to return it . The way she thanked me sent a deep knife down my spine.I wish she never did, it made it even unbearable because it broke my heart even more As I was leaving the compound in a haste for fear of snakes, a iron rod dragged my leg, almost ripping off the last toe on my left feet. This woman and her daughter didn't know what to do, at some point, I noticed they were begin to feel bad, I had to hide the deep pains I was feeling. The blood trailed me back to the hostel. It was a deep wound and so I had to visit the hospital to take injections and dressings of course. For over a month, I limped. But I have no regrets. When i look at the scar on my last toe, I remember that sometimes we may get in trouble for trying to help somebody, but we must also remember that it's pays to have a beautiful mind, it soothes the soul.

It's disheartening that this country is rich cos some are scooping the wealth of this country in dollars while so many can afford essentials of life (food, clothing, health facility, accommodation etc). If we share, then it'll go round.

That's why I weep when I think of LIBYA!!!!!! & even SYRIA.... NATIONs that hardly have a Homeless poverty-stricken family; yet destroyed for supposed lack of DEMOCRACY!!!! or rather Ruled by DICTATORs...

For me to even think there was a human soul behind her comment

This people are like brown goats that bring their stench wherever they go! You can't help but wonder how anyone couldn't forget tribe issues for a minute when something as important as this is being discussed How can she even tell which is Yoruba from Igbo beggars She stays and interviews them

Deep words!!!

I always have this satisfaction when I put a smile on someone's face, no matter how little.. It was funny how I gave a lady the last I had in my school account with hopes of going home the following day to take money from my parents.. There are lots of blessing that comes with giving.. The 'thank you, God bless you' etc people we give utter goes a long way to pave better days for us.. I am a witness of blessings after giving kiss..

So much philosophy, but zero feasibility.

I know of people who had their families killed and yet not only survived but came out stronger. True inspiration.

Can there be enthusiasm when you have no motivation?
Can there be pleasure when you are in pains?

Yes. The more you suffer, the more you desire to feel better, the bigger your motivation to make it, the more pleasure you can take from every little achievement. The choice is always yours. You can decide to give up or you decide to make the best out of everything. You can decide to complain about what you don't have or appreciate what you have.

The example on this thread is a perfect example of how a poor person can find joy in a simple thing like rice whereas many rich people feel restless and empty.

Poverty is like the dementors in Harry Potter, it's presence absorbs every atom of joy you ever had.
I know you haven't experienced this before, so it's easy for you to weave out diabetic philosophical assertions.

No, I haven't but my grandfather and his ten siblings too - they are all (those who are still alive) doing very well today. Very inspirational.

Since the resources on Earth are not equally distributed, there can't be enough food for everyone.

There is enough food for everyone. The distribution is the problem but where there is a problem, there is a solution and this is what we should focus on.

Your focus is largely dependent on your condition. You can say life is good because you have everything at your disposal or because you are a little bit privileged. But those people down the ladder of the society will always see life differently.

@bold

That's the problem.

As for the rest, I can say life is good because I chose to love life. Happiness is not necessarily dependent on conditions. This is how most of us were trained to think and reason but if conditions were responsible for happiness, there would be no depression in rich countries and yet the pharmaceutical industry make millions by selling antidepressants.
