The 130k in itself wasn't even regular and most state governments don't pay on time...you find yourself being owed 9 months . Most doctors have to do some other small jobs on the side either way it has always been as good as them not paying any allowance.

I see NYSC as a Time to gather valuable experience and any smart doctor who knows what he wants will use that 1 year as such.

Forget about the money when you have picked up valuable skills the money will roll in later.

The best place to gather hands on experience is in the North but you find most doctors running away from the north. you are probably the only qualified health professional in a local govt and you man the health Centre or even general hospital. you get to do a lot of procedures and perfect your skills and after NYSC you take those skills anywhere you want and work with them, skills acquired can never be taken away from you.

Although where I served in the north I earned way more than this 130k and i had collegues in federal institutions who didn't get up to that but with Private practice able to sum up way more than that because demand for doctors is high. But it's wasn't about the money for me, I was more after the experience.

However it's also not fair for one to expect a doctor to work for 15k month. it's entirely ridiculous. you cannot be seeing tens to hundreds of patients daily , run clinics, attend to emergencies , do surgeries take deliveries , work weekends and night calls etc and get paid 15k. The state govt cannot expect you to work as a full Medical officer and pay you 15k just because you are a corper. with this joke of a pay corpers should only run morning clinics 8am to 12pm , work Monday to Friday just like every other 'equal' corper.

I think this issue about which profession is best is left for the debate societies of secondary schools not post graduate level.

IMO it's sad to see people rejoicing at a pay slash to another person instead of fighting for an upgrade to thiers.


Anyway once service is over and all man for himself nobody would care what another person is earning cos its your headache alone.


Engineers, teachers would earn differently from themselves depend on where they work. When you get there open your mouth and say the Secretary spent 2 yrs in secretarial school why does she earn more than me.

Do you know that Medical doctors believe that they are next to God. What arrogance! They also look down on Nurses, laboratorists, Physiologists, Anatomists and Biochemists who trained them in the medical school.

In developed countries where PREVENTION is a priority over CURE, Research scientists earn more respect than Doctors.

Industrial Pharmacists and Biochemists who design drugs, produce drugs and ascertain its toxicity and dosage are the life savers. The reason is that, it is actually drugs that cure diseases and not doctors.

It seems, I should go into lecturing and teach some of these MBBS guys some respect.

He works at National Hospital Abuja but he earns less than my another uncle who studied Agric Economics.

The Agric Economist is an international Researcher. I bet you that the surgeon, even if he continues to work till thy kingdom come can not make 50% of the money that the later makes as a researcher and lecturer.

Right now, 3 Uk agencies have given him and colleague a research grant that worths millions of dollars.

No doctor in Kaduna State is richer and more recognized than Prof. Andrew Jonathan Nok, a renowed Biochemist.

I can give more examples if you want.

I know teachers who are richer than doctors i.e they earn more salaries than doctors.

Even the title doctor can be used by native doctors and illiterate rich business men.

Nobody forced you guys to study the course wisest being. Also 400l to 600l isnt 4yrs except your school messed you up. For crying out loud I have friends who are docs.

All we are saying is, nysc is about service to nation not to your pockets. If after service you get paid 1million, not my business. The way I see it, the less the remuneration the better. That way those who go into medicine solely for greed and not for humanity sake would choose a mpre profittable venture.

I don't get it. Medical petitioners clamouring for the biggest pay for one reason only, and that is, they believe they the most important professionals. Though it's firm of one-upmanship, I've got absolutely no issue with. One question: C. Ronaldo's football monthly earning is most medical practitioners will make in their entire careers; does that make him more important than all of them?
