Nurey, kpelee! An interesting outing nonetheless. My questions are: *Were you able to calculate your mpg for the distance covered? *What was your topspeed?

I wasn't able to calculate my mpeg, you have to realize I wasn't interested in that since its my first time, but I had covered more than 250km before I lost quater tank of fuel, remember I started with full tank, I also lost lost my exhaust and even with that the car was still damn efficient and no lousy noise attributed to exhaust breakage.

My speedo dial wasn't working but I would say I hit 130km/hr but I averaged more around 100 and 110 I didn't want to cross the 3xrpm mark reasons are
1. To not over work the engine
2. fuel consumption is at optimum within 2.5 and 3rpm
3. Overspeeding, I was more afraid of burst tire on high speed which could spell doom.
4. The Highway was mostly stunt driving, evading potholes, craters and sharp braking (I applied engine braking often before using main brake)

The manual gear kept me at alert and helped me keep up when I intend to follow a car especially at night also made overtaking at risky instances possible. You must also know when to backdown when overtaking and retry I had to do that often especially during hilly climb, I loved overtaking with gear 3 it doesn't rev or stress the engine even @ 4xrpm

If the car will reach lagos again, I will be damn too happy, the fuel economy really surprised me, the only issue is horse power, maybe after the paint job, we will consider turbo charging/boosting her. lol

Began following this thread after you began the trip. I think even up to the present... you are still obsessed with speed....from the beginning was about dusting other cars along the way...during the trip was about the speed of the other cars...in the end ... after all the calamity. ...is about turbo boosting your car...still about speed. The road back to Lagos remains the same...or worse. Your car is in worse shape. If you decide to repair it and drive it back to Lagos I suggest you reread and follow Siena's advice on preparations for a road trip. Also from others....like to pick people along the way who would know the local roads and most likely would give you better directions than any app can. As you drive...make sure you can listen to you engine and car in general for any abnormal sound. There is always a first time....mistakes would be made... but we should learn from them. It's a longggg way back home.... may you and your car limp back home in one piece.

We won't limp back home, we will stroll like a winner. It's an highway my brother you are expected to speed not excessive speeding, besides I needed to take advantage of other faster cars to help navigate the road since since I was a novice there.

Brother I am not drunk nor deranged, through out the journey, I never intended to challenge nor show prowess to any road user If not how can a 1993 1.4L nissan sunny packing 6 passengers dust me and I never passed 3rpm, I was cautious of my speed. Thank you for your contribution

Lol...strolling back home is fine too! Not a mechanic...but I suggest you have your hoses checked ...radiator hoses..upper and lower...checked for cracks, damage or any leakage before leaving the mechanic for your longggg stroll back home.

It's not all about speeding or over-speeding. It's about confidence, being attentive and maintaining a steady speed. Like I said earlier, op was agitated, curious, and got distracted by other cars. 80-100mph is a good spead at any time.

With that speed, you can easily and quickly respond to any urgent pop-ups, or powering down to dodge a pot hole and mostly importantly have a idea of how the engine is performing. Travelling isn't about race, but about getting to your destination. Op forgot about this because he was agitated.

The capacity of the engine does not matter, but how you handle and drive it, is what matters.
With 80-100mph and occasional 120mph will get you to your destination even if you arrive an hour late late after those flying hummer buses.

I challenge you, if you're a Nigerian, get that vehicle fixed and drive it back to lagos yourself. You stand to gain a lot of experience from that. Atleast, you won't be road jjc again. There's always a first time and you've had your own fair share.

Fix it and drive it back to become a pro.

If he don't do the above, he is a boy and not a man.

What will he tell his children that he was so scared he abandoned the car for a bus.

The same spirit that made him cover nearly 700km can make it retrace his steps, provided he fixes a new engine not repairing that dead engine.

And what is worse, the whole internet knows about him.

Goodluck bro, I don't know that route, but follow Idarachodb's advice of carrying some extra things, like fluids, extra spare tyre, filter, belt and other things you can think off and hope your headlamp is now bright, you don't want to be driving with dim headlamp at night

@Nurey

It's all a lesson and I know we're all now better drivers by this experience. My longest road trip was just shy of 1000km it was 942km (Gombe to Enugu through benue not Abuja), did this a couple of times back in the days. Had no issues, I think why this went wrong is essentially because you rebuilt your engine recently (gathered this from Gazzuzz's posts) and I don't know if the engine was properly broken in before you took it on this gruelling journey. Guess that lead to the accelerated wear and subsequent oil shorts.

There's a whole lot and sometimes conflicting info on how to break in a rebuilt engine, but breaking-in a rebuilt or new engine should be done. One rule of breaking-in an engine is not doing long trips like 1000km until the engine has been properly broken in. Can't remember now but I think 600miles is the figure Honda quotes from break-in distance. Nissan may be different.

Why I'm making this comment is because I see you are considering fitting in a new engine and undertaking the same journey, whilst a new tokunbo engine won't require break-in, it may be advisable to drain the oil after a couple hundred kms just to remove all the gunk in the engine (engine may have been sitting for long). This will ensure that any possible debris in the engine that can wear it out and cause oil shortage is removed. Also you have the task of ensuring that the replacement engine has not had any parts like rings replaced. If it has then its a rebuilt engine and a break-in procedure must be followed.

I have been following this thread quietly in the background. Nurey, we learn everyday. Now you know where you erred and i trust you will not repeat same. Personally, I check my oil and water every morning. It takes me less than a minute to check both. I also pray you are able to source for a cheap replacement engine. 1.5 litre engine cars can go just about anywhere as long as there is a road to that place. I own a 1.5 litre Honda city and it has taken me from PH to Lagos and back; a distance of over 1200 kilometers. I described the journey here on Nairaland. I got up to 160 Km/hr with it sometimes but kept it safe at 120 km/hr when the road was good enough.
As you consider upgrading Nurey, please bear in mind that there are trade offs to be made. If you are going for economy, then stick to engines below the 2.0 litre capacity and small cars. It doesn't make sense buying a heavy vehicle with an underpowered engine. Such a vehicle won't be efficient. If you want driving pleasure, then by all means go for a V6 or a turbocharged I4. Again, keep an eye on the weight of the vehicle. I wish you the best.
