President Muhammadu Buhari during his recent trip to India played host to two young ladies from Kano State, who just bagged M.Sc degrees in the First Class category.

During his meeting with Nigerians who live in India, held at the premises of the Nigerian High Commission, New Delhi, President Buhari granted private audience to Aisha Umar Auwal, and Jamila Muhammed, who had been sent on scholarship by the Kano State government, to pursue Master’s degrees. Both made First Class Honours.

The President lauded the two ladies for their feats, and commended such industry to Nigerian youths. He also praised the Kano State government for its emphasis on human capital development.

Exactly bro, its very good, instead of having just PASS for everybody.

Also, in India education system, 'A' starts form 75, so if you have 74 it is still B; and anything below 50 is 'F' in that course. Therefore, its not that rosy as it seems. The category for masters degree really helps for people proceeding for their PhD.

In India:
75% and above - First Class with Distinction (Equiv. to First Class in Nigeria)
60% and above - First Class (Equiv. to Second Class Upper in Nigeria)
50% and above - Second Class (Equiv. to Second Class Lower in Nigeria)
Below 49.5% - Pass Class

In Nigeria, 55% in masters is the MPhil to PhD grade, above 75% in masters is directly to PhD with lots of scholarship opportunity even overseas.

Categorizing the class of degree doesn't erodes the credibility, to me in the case of Masters degree, it seriously add more values to it. I am of the opinion that instead of generally having 'PASS' or 'FAIL' for Masters degree, the degree should also be categorized like the undergraduate (1st class, 2nd class etc) to separate the boys from the men.

Don't mind the sore losers. At the least these girls are making OUR Nigeria proud not some illiterate Igbos that were THREATENING to burn our embassy in India within 24 hours if Kanu isn't released. Funnily, it's been 420 hours after the threat but OUR embassy still dey stand like a rock. Amazingly Igbos still throng our embassy there for different consular services.

It is more difficult to make a first class in India than from any country in the western world. In fact Indians are ahead of Africans in terms of Academic prowess here in US. So those girls must be extremely good.

First class awards do not normally apply to post-graduate degrees like MSc. Exceptional MSc's are usually awarded a Distinction grade.
