richmon74: Boss, people sometimes make this mistake but thats why we are here--to learn and share Inverter charging current and inverter specifications doesn not have anything to do with how much harvest that the solar gives the batteries. as you said, the inverter is not the problem, the issues may be but not limited to the following- -Solar power specification and configuration(those 100w panels are not always impressive with yield) -whats the load requirement of the home? if the same configuration with the PWM CC was used for the MPPT, then it doesnt make any sense as the system will hardly generate voltage that would make the MPPT function to work. @Pharyn, change the configuration of the solar panels to enjoy the MPPT the temperature is getting higher recently, and it sure adversely affect PV especially if they are installed directly on the roof, check this you can use the inverter to augment if they have high load requirement . I would always tell people to tell their clients the truth about solar and renewable energy and thus my quote "if you want a backup power, its affordable; but if you need a complete independence, its a project" 2 Likes |

ibrodex:How did you get 1500 watts. Is that your peak load? To calculate the panels you need the total Watt hours you use. Divide that number by 5 that will give you the watts you need. The same watts hours divided by 24 will give you the amp hours you use. |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Nobody: 5:39pm On Nov 10, 2015 |
chris81964: Thanks for your reply so far. 1500 watts is an estimated figure based on the following. 7 standing fans with an estimated power of 90W ==== 630W 27 energy saving lights 15W each. =============405W 2LED TVs of 110W each =================== 220W Total ============================== 1255 W I rounded it up to 1500W. Note. This figures were obtained from the surgery I did for a prospective client. Projected time of use is 12hr. Needed to enlighten the client before he invest in it. He actually saw me using inverter in my apartment and since then he has been on my neck, though I did mine myself but he's on my neck and I needed to advise him and send him a quote. The quote will be based on with solar and without solar panels. Your candid advise is highly appreciated. |

ibrodex:For a 24v system, Minimum of 2 batteries in series is 24v*200AH=4800wh At 50%DOD- you get 2400WH, the multiply by 2 for 4 batteries or 24v Without solar a 24v,400AH gives 4800and can only power the home for just 3.8hrs of the battery is fully charged. For a 2battery, 24v*200AH, its just half of the above. If you wanna include solar , then u may need to differentiate daytime load and night time load, that would help a lot in estimating. U may not consume as much as 1255 at same time as you won't have all the fans and other appliances on all the time. You can also cut down the energy consumed by the bulbs(we can supply you LED bulbs 3-7watts) Please note: "What can power in the day is being determined by how much energy u harvest from the sun , but how much u have in the night is solely dependent on the charge in the battery" Cheers |

ibrodex:I am not sure everything will be on at the same time for twelve hours. Multiply your watts by the number of hours you intend to run them for. That will give you your watts hours. Divide Watt hours by System voltage. That will give you the AH s you use. Your battery bank has to be at least double that number. Divide the same Watt hours by 5 to determine the panel watts. Good luck 1 Like |

Hello I would appreciate advice from experts on this thread. My power requirements are 1500-2000watts(if I use the washing machine). I decided to buy PRAG inverter first then when I get more funds I buy the rest. I also want to solar panels to charge the batteries. |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Nobody: 8:55am On Nov 20, 2015 |
So for now I'm getting 2.5kva PRAG What's specs for solar panels do I need Do I need to get PRAG batteries as well or what other brand would you recommend Apart from batteries, solar panels, inverter what other accessories do I need? |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Konnektions146(m): 3:51pm On Nov 20, 2015 |
salsera: Inverter batteries( also battery rack) charge controller(controls how your batteries charge from the Solar panels) Solar panels Professional Solar Roof mount/ Iron fabricated mount Protective devices(DC Circuit breakers, SPD,Current limiters etc) cables and connectors 1500watts for 24hrs or at certain point? thats a lot of power and i must add that 2.5KVA is about 2KW, I am sure you wouldnt wanna run 75-100% load on your inverter. You need to trim down your load lest you have millions to invest in this project. |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Nobody: 9:08am On Nov 23, 2015 |
Konnektions146 Thanks I don't need it for 24hours oh, just for 8hours max during periods when we don't have electricity. And 1500watts would the most if all appliances are on at the same time which wont be the case. We get electricity for about 6-8hours a day and we use generator too occasionally. |

I would like to throw this issue up for discussion. I installed a number of 1.5kva 24v inverters(safepower, luminous, genius , sukham etc). After 10 months thereabout, the clients notified me of reduced number of hours of backup. Preliminary checkes revealed a failing battery and in most cases, the most negative battery. The same happens with INDIAN 48v inverters too. Lets discuss the possible causes and solution. My integrity has been badly affected as a result because I promised most of them 2yrs of useful battery life. The most annoying part is most clients are my senior colleagues at work...u all know what it means. attn: juo, richmon74, chris81964, Konnektions146, Earthrealm, c0ogumo and every other knowledgeable person . 1 Like |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by salam12(m): 4:42pm On Nov 23, 2015 |
abunafiu: Please check if any of the mentioned inverters have setting for DOD. If this important safety control is not there, most times the batteries must have been pulled down to 100% DOD which will be more injurious to battery life. Also, most of these inverters must have come with 10 to 20A charging capacity which will be too small to deliver needed power to pull back the batteries fully from nearly zero SOC. 2 Likes |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by abunafiu(m): 4:58pm On Nov 23, 2015 |
salam12:I doubt if there's any indian 1.5kva 24 inverter with DOD settings. Thanks for ur input sir @salam12. |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by chris81964(m): 6:59pm On Nov 23, 2015 |
abunafiu: Accept my sympathies. 1. How did you size the battery bank? 2. What size chargers do the inverters have? 3. Salam12 has asked the other questions that are relevant. Lead acid batteries don't like being completely discharged. The sealed batteries need to see 28.5 to 29 V (on 24V) daily during the charge routine. With a small charger and a depleted battery bank you batteries will not see that. |

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by abunafiu(m): 9:20pm On Nov 23, 2015 |
chris81964:Thank sir@ chris81964. The inverters in question are the popular indian brands we all know. The battery used are 200ah of the same indian brand name. Yes most of these clients deplete their bank up to 100% dod. The issue now is most of the inverters have battery low voltage alarm usually at 11.0V and wt this level of discharge a significant number cycle life is lost. How come its only one battery that suffers this ill fate? most installers are faced with same problem. let's discuss |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by chris81964(m): 11:57pm On Nov 23, 2015 |
abunafiu: I don't do the Indian brands. So I am not familiar with them and can't give a qualified opinion. The reason why they list cycle uses on batteries is so that you know the maximum and minimum voltage you can charge the batteries to. When they are not charged properly sulfation occurs and there is no particular manner in which it occurs. Differences in tightness of your lug, distance of battery to the charge source, imperfections in the battery can be the reason why one fails before the other. I attended a class over the weekend and the instructor told us that you can equalize your sealed batteries. Give that a try and see if it will bring it back. At 12 Volts your battery is flat. It is beyond flat at 11 volts. You might want to set the alarm for 11.5 Volts. Run the equalization and get a desulfator. The instructor swore by them. If the batteries are not too far gone you might be able to rescue them with the suggestion that I made. 1 Like |
