jstbeinhonest: Imo has less people to pay, therefore it has less debt. It has about 5 billion naira to pay, and about 4.8 billion naira earnings, therefore the debt is at +200 million or thereabout. AKS has 17 billion to pay, and 16 billion earnings. The debt is at 605 milla. But AKS is still generally more sustainable than Imo. Did you miss that part? 9 Likes |

There are hidden data not easily revealed in that report. Those states owing what did they use their loans for? If two states are owing, you not only look at sustainability but also infrastructure growth and other indices. Like Fashola said, I will rather borrow to build infrastructures but not to pay salary. I will say Osun and Ekiti are worst hit in the southwest because a state like Ogun have room to expand its revenue base within a short period. The truth is governors have damaged states economies and states with more infrastructural deficit are worse even if they owe less. Obviously, states with huge civil servants especially teachers in public schools spend more and those with less especially in the North may be more financially better. Ekiti and Osun need to reform in order to become sustainable, cut the number of ministries, enlarge tax revenue base, and cut on political patronage. They also need to invest in agriculture, solid minerals and encourage better economic climate. Apart from the top five, you cannot say any state is better than another if it has more poor infrastructures as roads, educational advancements, environmental challenges and more socioeconomic backwardness. As much as sustainability matters, level of growth, economic advancement must be measured as well. Those unsustainable states needs to reform and be creative. 35 Likes 2 Shares |

there's nothing wrong with SW states. They are economically viable the IGR proves that. only ekiti has abysmally low score. the problem lies with SW Governors and their reckless fiscal policies. they practically borrowed their states into unsustainable debt. with little or nothing to show for it. They embarked on showmanship projects that are neither revenue-generating ventures nor self-sustaining. their socialist tendencies with poor developmental visions severely affected the states n brought some to near ruin. and that brings me to kemi adeosun she was the commissioner for finance in ogun state when amosun went on borrowing spree. fine, her tenure witnessed markedly increased IGR for the state with an efficient tax collection system as well blocking leakages. she also flushed out ghost workers from the workforce and introduced accountability into the system. but that is not enough. now that she is the new minister of finance, she needs to explain how the debt of ogun state rose to #55 billion right under her watch. did she ever think the economy the state can sustain such debt profile. why did she approve such bonds when she knew the governor is only interested in building fancy overhead bridges across the state. can she tell us those borrowed funds were judiciously utilized. she met a state with healthy financial status, now she's leaving it in red and unsustainable. That says a lot about her capabilities as she embark on her new position, at a time Nigeria is in a dire financial critical state. 33 Likes 5 Shares |

jstbeinhonest: Learn to first put on your thinking cap the next time you're going to post and wail on Nairaland. This is from that same link of yours Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has listed Nigeria’s 10 highest revenue receiving states based on the federal allocations in 2013. The article clearly says the reciepts are from 2013, while the budgit research tabulates the figures with reference to the 2014 revenue sharing exercise. And anyone who was abreast with the happenings in 2014 would tell you there was a drop in federal allocation across the country as a result of the drop in oil prices. Furthermore, you still haven't told us why you're so aggressive and agitated. The OP is neither the person who made the research, no the one compiling the figures. A link to the PDF from Budgit was posted there, so if you have any grievances, why not contact Budgit and wail to them there so we may all live happily ever after? 7 Likes |

jstbeinhonest: For goodness sake, Akwa Ibom's ANNUAL IGR is 15 billion, NOT monthly! Say it with me now, ANNUAL! You know what ANNUAL means, right? It means the monthly IGR stands somewhere around 1.25 billion. When you subtract that from the state's 2014 MONTHLY earnings of about 16 billion, it means the state got an average of 14.75 billion or thereabout as MONTHLY allocation for 2014 after the drop. You see why I say you're just grasping at straws? You're currently arguing blindly just for the sake of it, and you're ruled by your emotions. Your obvious attempt to derail the thread has also not gone unnoticed, and it is at this juncture that I would implore you to direct any further objections or grievances straight to Budgit. This is my last reply to you. 15 Likes 1 Share |
