Cut down the population of civil service workers by encouraging vocations. Not everyone should be in the Civil service

Encourage entrepreneurship so more private sector jobs can be created. If we lay off government workers through inefficiency, they can move to the private sector and those on the payroll of the Government will reduce

Raise Taxes:Taxes should be raised.Companies should pay more tax. This is where I fault Ogun state

Cut Spending: Increasing tax is not enough, some of these Governors are just wasteful.Patronize local firms because Its cheaper. There's Dantata & Sawoe Construction, there's Costain west Africa.I believe these foreign construction companies are cheating us.Projects that should ordinarily cost $2 billion will cost $7billion .Why?
[/b]

I like the idea of cutting our civil service but I fear it might backfire and could really make a lot of people miserable. so am thinking why not make our civil service productive. most of this civil servants do nothing at their place of work. they resume at 8 and before you know it, they are off before 3. they need to start being productive even if its going to take giving workers in the ministry of agriculture hoes and cutlasses to go work in government set up farms. enough if workers in our ministries sitting down in offices doing nothing. they should go to the field and serve as work force for the state. if the states have companies they are runnung , civil servants should be the workers there. if state a have farms, civil servants should be the attendants there. if the state has a bank, civil servants should be the bankers. this way, we would generate fund while using the state's civil service

Can you imagine that Nigerians complained when Buhari stopped the patronization of foreign construction companies?

These foreign companies thinks Africans are dumb and backwards. They will charge as much as legally possible.

When we have local engineers and contractors, why are we hiring foreign labor? When we have local cement companies, why are we buying from foreign companies?

I heard that Aregbesola used to be a mechanic. How is someone like that supposed to understand investment/economy/debt vs revenue etc?

Huh? - there goes ya technocrat.

We know that leveraging is to use debt to finance activity or activities. For example, one usually borrows money in the form of a mortgage to buy a house. One commonly speaks of this as leveraging the house. Likewise, one leverages when one uses a margin in order to purchase securities. A company with much more debt than equity is generally called "highly leveraged." Too much leverage is thought to be unhealthy.OUR 5 SW GOVERNORS LEVERAGING IS THREEMUCH.I BELIEVE THEY HAVE SPENT THIS MONIES LAVISHLY ON THEMSELVES.Many firms use leverage in order to expand operations.Ask yourself,my beloved brother, what exactly have they expanded? ...WHICH ACTIVITIES IN THE SW HAVE OUR 5 GOVERNORS FINANCE, MY BROTHER PLS NAME THEM

That is my point too. If they had used the fund judiciously, by now theY would have paid back or about to finish the repayment. It is just about having a proper financial planning. By having a form of annuity where monthly or quarterly sum is repaid and before you know it, they will be meeting their terms as and when due.

This can only be done when they know how to raise their IGR properly. However, I discovered our governors are poor at planning. They are also poor at using common sense like Awolowo, Tinubu and Fashola, instead they like to criticize Fashola.

I remember some years ago when Aregbesola said Osun people could not pay tax because they were poor. These are the people that you wanted to feed their children, provide airport for, provide standard gauged road for, etc.

Under Awolowo, tax was compulsory for every able-bodied man. There was also education tax payable by every man. That was why education was free under him. Our governors need to learn a lot from Fashola. People were shouting and calling for low-cost housing yet cement was about N2000 per bag, land alone was running into millions in Lagos, all other materials were expensive and you want N500,000 3 bedroom flat? He did not listen to the charlatans. he already knew when the chips are down, his name would be mentioned. Not everything can be free in this modern age. Our leaders should know that. What Fashola promised Lagosians were affordable houses and he delivered it.

Why can't they toll roads where people can afford it? Why cant students pay for their chairs and uniform while tuition is free? or something else to reduce government burdens.

Brev, even if they were to raise taxes, I don't think that alone will solve the problem. To maximise IGR, you have to spend money on assets and build infrastructures, so as to entice investors. These states don't even have the capital for that - they're all running a deficit.

All I can see here are owanbe governors celebrating owanbe parties despite living in a shared apartment.

Well as a passive participant on nairaland I have followed this thread and it is really good.
Back to the development of South West, the reality is that the yoruba's are living on past glory. There is no area of development we can be proud of especially since the inception of this Democratic experience.
The quality of leadership has been a great disgrace. There is no leader to be proud of.All of these leaders are there for their own selfish interest. And why do we find ourselves in this situation? One Nigeria is the problem. That is why I get pissed off with some yoruba's both online and offline polluting the atmosphere with one Nigeria nonsense without the realization that,Nigeria is being held together by oil and greed of the political class including the current shamless yoruba leaders at all levels but they will self destruct.

Omisore

His words: “Osun is now a failed state because of the financial recklessness of the governor. I really appreciate the fact that he confessed the present state of Osun affairs is beyond him, and he should immediately throw in the towel.

“Nearly all commercial banks in Osun are being owed one form of loan or the other. The matter has reached a stage that the committee of bankers in the state at their meeting resolved that no bank should loan this government any more money. They are also waiting for remittances into state’s coffers.

As soon as money comes in, they withdraw it. The situation calls for sober reflections, and we will also look at ways we are going to help our people in a manner that will not ridicule them.”

Commenting further, Omisore said the immediate past federal administration did not owe Osun or any state statutory allocation or any other funds due to it, and alleged that, apart from inflated contracts, Aregbesola also spent a huge sum on the presidential project of the All Progressive Congress, APC, and was among the five highest donating states.

well we can start by getting this sort of info to our youths. a lot of our youths don't know all this. dey are just following politicians they have no idea what is being done to their future. look ever since this thread started, not up to 100 different people have commented. there are only about 2 million ppl on nairaland its self of which just about 500k is Yoruba. and not all of them are regular visitors. now, that's about 500k out of about 30 million youths in Yoruba land. we need to learn every one know let's take this information we have to the streets, to our schools, offices , market places. let's letbppl know the dire future ahead of them. from the literates to the illiterates. from the learnerds to the unlearned. we need to let then know so that when elections come up, people will ask the right questions. when people start asking the right questions from leaders, they will know people now know much more than they think. I believe information is power and one of the problems we have via ignorance. let's inform people around us the way we are heading into let's show then the proofs and stats of our present situation and believe me you,it won't be long before we start getting it right

God bless you!
sometime I ask do ask myself if Yoruba folks on nairalAnd are not up to 500, with the number of people that Are part of this thread.
and I don't think there's another thread like this here. I noticed that Yoruba folks on nairaland are mostly political tools (APC/PDP thingy). than speaking for the interest of our people and territory. it's not use to be so way back. we have no contemporary on nairaland because we are the most populous tribe here.

THIS IS FROM THE DEBT MANAGEMENT OFFICE...
DEBT MANAGEMENT OFFICE
NIGERIA
PRESS RELEASE
FINAL REPORT
ON
THE
RESTRUCTURING OF BANKS’ LOANS TO
STATES INTO FGN BONDS
In line with the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently straighten and strengthen the economy,
the government has attached high priority to addressing the fiscal imbalance faced by most States of the
Federation. The immediate cause of the fiscal imbalance was the structural drop in the international price of
crude oil by more than 43% and the resultant drop in the revenue allocation from the distributable pool for all
governments in the Federation by about 40%.
The Situation constrained the ability of many States to meet their
financial obligations, including payment of salaries. Hence, the government’s decision for a prompt response.
As one of the salutary options for short term fiscal stabilisation, the Debt
Management Office put forward a proposal for restructuring the short-term bank loans of States into long-term Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) Bonds. The purpose was to reduce the debt
-service outflow of States and free resources for meeting
other obligations, particularly, clearance of arrears of salaries and pensions.A total of twenty-three States had submitted requests for the bank loan-to FGN bond restructuring.
Phase I
consisted of
eleven
States
which had completed and submitted all necessary documentations, including the
submission of jointly authenticated balances with banks as at August 14, 2015. These States had their bank loans restructured into 20-year FGN bonds effective August 17, 2015.
Phase II of the restructuring consisted of
twelve States
whose bank loans were restructured into 20-year FGN bonds effective September 16, 2015.The second Phase concludes the restructuring exercise.
Fourteen banks were involved in Phase I debt restructuring operation and their total loans to the eleven States which were restructured amounted to N322.788 billion.
Twelve banks were involved in Phase II of the restructuring operation and the total loans restructured for the twelve States amounted to N252.728 billion
bringing the total restructured amount for the twenty three States to N575.516 billion.
Some banks featured in
both phases but the total number of banks involved was 15.The restructuring was effected using a re-opening of the FGN
Bond issued on July 18, 2014 and maturing on
July 18, 2034. The pricing was based on the yield to date of the bond at a 30-day average, resulting in a transaction yield of 14.83%.Indicators of the impact of the debt management operations include:i.monthly debt service burden has droppedby a minimum of 55% and a maximum of 97%, among the
twenty three
States; and,ii.interest rate savingsfor the twenty three States ranges from 3% to 9% p.a. The restructuring is good not only for the States but also for the banking system because: banks’balance sheets will improve as weak subnational loan assets are replaced with high quality Sovereign assets; the FGN Bonds
enjoy enhanced liquidity as they ar
e traded in the secondary market; and,
banks would have improved space to
lend to other sectors of the economy as they are free to convert their FGN Bond holdings into cash in the
secondary
market.
