Aareonakakanfo: The budget and debt profile is a tricky subject to approach 1 There is a disproportionate number of civil servant in the SW who just take salary and have very little input to the economy. Its also a very sensitive political issue because ofthe large number of salry earners who make a bulk of the voting population or their dependent. In the interior almost everyone in the SW is tied to some salary earner When the govt of Bisi AKande in osun tried to do the right thing, He retired older employees and not too productive ones. People rose against him His argument was that In a school of 60 teachers, You have 6 teachers for govt, 10 for CRK and IRK i Physics, 1 Maths 2 English 20 for Home economics There is no way the education sector of the state would bring the needed result from the investment made to it if we spend more salary on Unproductive subjects The people kicked against it and it became a Political issue. Needless to say He lost the election Fayemi became governor in Ekiti his first move was education reform He gave teachers subject teachers tests in their own field and those that didnt pass were fired E.g If you teach Physics you wer given a Physics test WAEC level and passmark was about 60% man failed. He laid them off and it became a big political issue and one of the reasons he lost to Fayose The money Fayemi saved then, I heard he tried to use it on infrastructures in Ekiti and was roundly commended for his road projects and developmental projects but the civil servants kicked against it At a time when Oil prices were high and income to states High, Recurrent expenditures were the like the bulk of expenses. Now when oil prices crashed states couldnt pay they had to resort to borrowing For us to see any meaningful development in the country we need to develop other part of the economy which can employ people so everyone wont depend on civil service for employment 4 Likes |

raumdeuter: Hmmmn Oro nla! that was why I said entrpreneurship/vocations should be encouraged so that there will be more jobs in the private sector People who are laidoff from the civil service can move to the private sector And I thought it was fayose who did the competence test thing? And the retirement age needs to be reduced as well |

Typically in Nigeria, After graduation from secondary school the smartest 10-20% go to top University, the next 20-50% to 2nd tier University and Polytechnic. the ones below find their way to college of education or drop out The ones who drop out go into trade, blue collar and become independent quicker A bulk of the top 50% who went to Universityand Polytechnic would graduate and cant get a private sector job so all would turn to the Pubblic sector Hoping they get absorbed as Secondary school teachers, College of education employees, NECO workers, etc Govt jobs Most of them are not even that smart to contribute anything but just collect the salary Because there isnt any other sector for people to work in Also the Southwest Being one of the favourite destination of Nigerians take in more other tribes than others and some of them also join the workforce and compete with the already scarce resorce So Aareonakakanfo, Shymexx suggest a solution By the way my great uncle was 13th Aare ona kakanfo of Yorubaland. raumdeuter: We actually discussed the migration thing and we couldn't come up with any solution. We're still in Nigeria Shymm3x came up with a gutsy idea like what Abia state did to workers from other south-east states but we all know how things are viewed in this country. We all remember what happened when Fashola sent some destitutes home. As per the emboldened, e be like say we go gats contact Seun to give you this Aareonakakanfo moniker |
Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by Nobody: 8:28pm On Nov 13, 2015 |
I don't think a solution on that migration issue should be discussed on a public forum due to non-yoruba presence. Also DAWN have recognised that net migration to the SW is a serious issue.Personally I think whatever policies should be subtle ones..so folks can't point to it.How are whites are able to ensure African Americans don't move into their areas in large amounts beyond violence?...don't the same Yorubas says its difficult to buy land in those folks region?...as I was telling a Yoruba guy...as long as Yorubas continue selling lands to those folks and being ever willing to welcome them...they will always have issues with them. You make your environment unwelcoming to folks you don't desire through subtle tactics. 1 Like |

Ritchiee: I won't debunk the fact that he didn't do anything in osun as par Infrastructure o. this is 21st century but what am saying is that ; osun isn't ripe for the project he was and still embarking on. he just created the avenue for his political opponents and outsider to ridicule osun state. for example what will talking drum do to the people of osun state? why building airport with the longest runway? for what reason? Aregbesola met osun as a non viable economic state. what he should have done is to woo And create room for investors. reduce the civil work force (heard they have the highest number of civil servant after Lagos). the man really lost it big time. before you borrow money, ask yourself if you have the financial capacity to pay back. mcheeew 1 Like |

quimicababes: One of our problems in Yoruba is the pseudo intellectual and Political correctness we always claim In the real Nigeria, everyone is blatantly tribalistic and in your face about it but Yorubas would want to claim sophistication about it There is nothing sophisticated about not protecting your land. I served in the North and have travelled a few times to the east. They make it clear from the beginning that you are a foreigner and your rights are limited here period. If you dont like it bounce. Abia state govt confidently sacked all non indigenes in the state workforce. Thats a bold move Go on youtube, if you understand Yoruba well go and listen to Akintola speech in 1964. I have interpreted it in English on Nairaland in the past and wont do again I dont want to be dragged back to NL politics. Let me stay watching my Bayern Munich 1 Like |

raumdeuter: Hmmmn Eye opening stuff there maaan.Eye opening stuff. I would have posted it here but I don't want us to digress Baba saw the future but some called it tribalism. I've always said it that these characters are smart.Once you speak out against them, they start playing victim and that you're jealous of them and blabla and they do it well unfortunately people fall for it So would you suggest South-west governors go hard on them? since the issue is affecting our people while their region remains stable |

raumdeuter: Brilliant input. However, before we heap the blame solely on those working in the civil service - I think it will be better to know the total number of workers employed by the state and the cumulative wages they earn monthly vis-a-vis the recurrent expenditure, to determine the actual percentage they contribute to the recurrent expenditure. Also, what other aspect of government spending contributes to recurrent expenditure in the Nigerian context? I agree that Nigeria's excessive dependence on oil is a big problem. Ditto the structure of the country. And like I posited in the past: Nigeria is a poor country cos the money the country makes from oil is too meagre to cater effectively to the huge population. However, that doesn't absolve these governors from blame. You can't run a government on deficit and the beauty of good governance is about being proactive, prudent, and the ability to make the electorate feel the impact of effective governance. Once you start running a deficit and incurring unnecessary debts - with nothing to show for it - it is only matter of time before everything will come crashing down. Furthermore, I'm sure there are a lot state departments/ministries that are dormant and are really of no use...why can't they scrap them? |
