The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has identified the use of
text message symbols as part of the “general weaknesses of candidates in
the various subjects” of the Council’s examinations.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the weekend by the Public
Affairs Officer of the Council, Mr Demianus Ojijeogu, after the 60th
Meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee, the Council’s highest
decision-making organ in Nigeria.
It said: “General weaknesses of candidates in the various subjects as
outlined in the Reports include poor command of language, indiscriminate
lifting of portions of set passages as answers and use of text message
abbreviation “u” for “you” in English Language.”
According to the statement, “appropriate sanctions” were also
recommended for candidates, schools and supervisors who were indicted
in the various reports submitted to the Committee for consideration, in a
bid to reduce the rate of examination malpractice:
“The Committee endorsed appropriate sanctions in all established cases of
malpractice as prescribed by the Rules and Regulations governing the
conduct of the Council’s examinations after diligent deliberations. It
approved that the entire results of candidates involved in proven cases,
which attract cancellation of entire results (CER) be cancelled, while
subject results of those involved in cases which attract cancellation of
subject results (CSR) be similarly cancelled.”
Subjects in which the performance of candidates was said to be good
included: Shorthand, Financial Accounting, Commerce, Typewriting,
Storekeeping, Bookkeeping, Office Practice, Store Management and
Physics 2.
The Committee’s 60th Meeting considered reports emanating from the
conduct of November/December 2014 and May/June 2015 examinations.

Blame it on the students' inability to differentiate serious work from play. When you're writing an exam as serious as WAEC, common sense should guide you
