Forget all these kudos now. Everyone hated Azikiwe.

Firstly, WHY D YORUBAS HATED HIM, during d elections of 1963, Awolowo wanted d SE & SW to form an alliance in parliament against d north. Azikiwe formed an alliance wt d north instead, awolowo was labelled a tribal racist. After d NPC/NcNC coalition won d elections, awolowos action group became d opposition and was always clashing wt d central govt, and it devolved into riots. Awolowo was bundled to prison by azikiwe & Ahmad bello. Ahmad bellos friend, ladoke akintola, was made western premier.


Secondly, WHY D NORTH HATED HIM, After d 1966 coup when azikiwe was spared by d Igbos and everyone else killed, d Northerners believed they went into partnership wt him in good faith but dt he planned d whole coup. This was because immediately after d coup, his close friend on d cabinet nwafor orizu made himself acting president (even though he wasn't d next in command to takeover d cabinet). Orizu then read a national statement on TV DT he had spoken to azikiwe and DT he would hand over power to d military (aguiyi ironsi - another Igbo man). Ironsi also made a national sttmnt accepting d invitation. The Igbo coup plotters were never arrested for slaughtering d north and Sw leaders in d jan 1966 coup. Immediately ironsi became president he unified d govt and scrapped regionalization. This was sthn azikiwe ALWAYS preached in d NCNC but cld never attain in his democratic partnership. DTS why d north believed he was complicit in d coup.


Thirdly, Igbos hated him because in d height of d civil war he started schmoozing wt Gowon, even though he had earlier supported Biafra - he backtracked and started supporting d government. The Nigerian troops would distribute fliers of him and Gowon praying in Lagos all over Biafra for them to see. It demoralized Biafra soldiers.
