Kemi Adeosun's Appointment Refuses To Boost Investors' Confident As NSE Dips by Alxmyr(m): 7:57pm On Nov 16, 2015
The appointment of new finance minister Kemi Adeosun refuses to boost market confidence on monday Nigeria Stock Exchange market index fell to a two-and-half-month low on as the poor outlook for Africa's biggest economy dragged down the relatively liquid banking and consumer goods sectors.

The administration of Muhammadu Buhari has come under criticising following his inability to constitute his cabinet six month after he assumed leadership of the world sixth largest producer of petroleum. This many analysts saw as the cause for economic slowdown in the country.

However his choice of Ms Adeosun, a former commissioner of finance in the south west Ogun state is seen by many as disappointing. Adeosun is considered by many as greenhorn.

The naira has weakened with sagging oil prices, which have hurt the economy and government revenues, and the six-month wait for President Muhammadu Buhari to form a cabinet after his poll victory has added to the strains.

The stock market, which has the second-biggest weighting after Kuwait on the MSCI frontier market index , shed 1.07 percent on Monday to 28,532 points, a level last reached in August. The index is down 17.7 percent this year.

"The sell pressure is majorly investors' reaction to weaker macroeconomic fundamentals which have depressed earnings across a broad spectrum ranging from consumer goods to banks," said Ayodeji Ebo, head of research at Afrinvest.

Share dealing on the bourse has declined this year as foreign investors, worried about currency risks, stay on the sidelines. Share dealing in September fell to 129.92 billion naira, down 75.2 percent from year ago.

The index of Nigeria's top 10 banking stocks shed 3.39 percent on Monday. Stanbic IBTC, the Nigerian unit of South Africa's Standard Bank, lost the most, falling 4.98 percent. Zenith Bank shed 4.82 percent while Dangote Flour Mills fell 4.74 percent.

"Right now, the Nigerian market still appears over-valued as it trades at a higher price to earnings multiple of 13.4 times compared to MSCI Frontier Index of 4.8 times," Afrinvest Ebo said.

Analysts say new central bank rules on loss provision may hurt dividend payouts as lenders prepare to adopt stricter international requirements.

Other decliners include Flour Mills Nigeria down 3.14 percent, Guaranty Trust Bank down 3.72 percent and United Bank for Africa down 3.7 percent.

Adeosun’s appointment to head the most important ministry during a time of economic crisis will stir some controversy. She is relatively inexperienced, especially compared to her immediate predecessor Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a political heavyweight. Adeosun has a strong background in the UK’s private financial sector but may struggle to navigate federal politics as the only post she previously held in Nigeria was Commissioner of Finance in Ogun State,” an analyst told Forbes.

We don't need the name of our new finance minister to boost the confidence of the investors . Some people are economically ignorant, our economy is being oxygenated by our politicians' money which is not suppose to be so and to prove that, our economy started collapsing since the active implementation of TSA by Buhari. The banks know that the quickest way of making money is to invest in politics. Since the begining of TSA, we all know how the banks and some other companies have been sacking their workers because there is no financial leakages again and nothing like using back door to get contracts, nepotism has been abolished, ministers no longer award contract!! What we need is the practical results of her economic policy for the growth of our nation which will be reflected on our standard of living and per capita income hence to the investor.
And stop calling her green horn because she has well managed the finance of Ogun state. When we have ''white horn'' and highly experienced economist like Ngozi okonjo with all her doctorate degree, what did she changed? The high profile Dr.ngozi ended up lying to us that our economic is good and we have more money in reserve until Buhari removed the veil, that's when we know that she earned her doctorate degree due to her dexterity in lying.

What did expertise of NOI, the world bank managing director achieve?
She should be allowed to do the job her boss assigned to her.

Funny article. I believe that we should allow my babe(Kemi grin) to come up with her policy document for the sector before rushing to nail her. She may be 'inexperienced' but we need fresh ideas rather than recycled ideas. Honestly, of all the 36 ministers, she is the ONLY one I admire.

yeah you can't, but the economy can. Investors can, JP MORGAN bond index can etc. The sad reality is that right now a large chunk of the middle class are losing jobs.

well, I can compare but what I meant by that statement is that the previous person, definitely had massive positive reputation and international recognition. either way, if the investors have little reference to her previous work and she being relatively unknown to them then, her introduction would do nothing to inspire confidence.

No confidence because a local minister is harder to manipulate than an international one. Thanks, we like her like that. She is perfect. If they are bothered with investment, shouldn't the investment minister be most important to them? Or is what goes into our national purse the main attraction here.

I tell you to run and run.

Real investor react to polices not the name of minster.

Also, Nigeria don't need portfolio investor.
