The man who did not run away. He did what was obvious to every sensible observer - when the war has been won and lost, the vanquished surrender unconditionally. 31 Likes 2 Shares |

I salute General Philip Effiong who was the last president of Biafra. This man stood and faced the armed Nigerian soldiers to hand over the surrender letter. God bless the great General Philip Effiong. I love the Efik/Ibibio which is why I am celebrating them on my nl profile. I am not agitating for Biafra or calling for war but if Nigeria breaks tomorrow, the Igbos look forward to having very cordial relationship with our Efik/Ibibio brothere. These guys are the most reliable group of people in the Niger Delta. God bless the Efik/Ibibio. @Pazienza, please channel your energy to building an even stronger bond between us and the Efik/Ibibio. 49 Likes 3 Shares |

Philip Effiong is the real civil war hero on the biafran side. He didnt run away, he stood his ground and surrendered because he knew the odds were stacked against the biafrans. However, ojukwu, the initatior of the war, who once boasted that he would fight till the last drop of his blood, eventually ran away to Abidjan after commandeering a plane that was meant to airlift sick biafran children. Alhaji Shehu Shagari later granted ojukwu amnesty in 1982. In 1983, ojukwu contested in the Senatorial election, he also contested in the 2003 & 2007 presidential elections and he lost woefully on all occasions. It is highly preposterous that a man who fought against Nigeria, later came back to Nigeria and participated at various elections in the same country that he fought against. 52 Likes 3 Shares |

lalasticlala: Obong (Major-General) Phillip Asuquo Effiong, Akangkang Ibiono Ibom may you continue to rest in peace, in the bosom of the Most High God. You were an uncommon soldier, a man of principle whose humanity was not in doubt. A man of courage, compassion and integrity who did the best he could, to end the carnage of the civil war, and save further lives from being lost at a time when it mattered most. You took a step many could not have taken - a step that some thought was unpopular, but necessary. Your courage will always be remembered. For this reason, many of us remain thankful, and will always be. We remember you with gratitude. We remember you with warmth. We remember you with love. You will always live on in our hearts. EUROBOMBER:3MCDO suffered minimal casualty before Operation OAU(Owerri, Aba, Umuahia). It was a mission hinged on Adekunle's over bloated ego after the spectular success his division recorded in chasing the biafran occupiers away from the Niger Delta areas. It was not part of the 3MCDO's initial battle plan. Adekunle ordered the Operation as an October 1st 1968 independence gift to General Gowon Britain and USSR supported Nigeria, so also did France, Portugal, South Africa, Haiti, Zambia, Gabon, Tanzania, Ivory Coast support Biafra 14 Likes |

I recommend that everyone should read Philip Effiongs "Biafra: My story". Philip Effiong was an admirable man. He stood by his boss through thick and thin. It should be noted that had Ojukwu stayed back at the end of the war, he would have been caught and killed for nothing but the Nigerian authorities had no beef with Philip Effiong. It should be noted that Philip Effiong joined the Nigerian Army in Enugu in 1945. I'm happy that when he died, Biafrans went to Ibinio Obong to give him an unforgettable burial. 13 Likes |

GspotAngela: The question is what type of support did those guys give to Biafra because the standard gun for the Biafran soldier was the bolt action riffle. BIafra did not have heavy mobile armour or heavy artllery so where was the support? USSR alone gave Nigeria the 120 mm artillery gun as at that time which was about the biggest of that time. Biafran soldiers were rationing bullets like food at some point for their bolt action riffles so what type of support did we get from those guys really? 1 Like |

kingzizzy: It is only a foolish General that will allow himself to be captured when there is room for escape. ojukwu did the right thing by escaping capture because he would have been humiliated and killed. The rule for Generals is to escape capture if you can but where this is not possible, you either commit suicide or die taking your bullets on the chest and not your back. 5 Likes |

EUROBOMBER:So whose fault was it ? Ojukwu couldnt equip his army properly, he couldnt feed his civilians adequately and he was boasting before the commencement of hostilities that he has the largest army in black africa and that the other side(Nigeria) would be shocked as to what they would get from him. 16 Likes |

kingzizzy: Okay, so Ojukwu was afraid of death and that was why he ran away?? Why did Ojukwu abscond after sending so many to give their lives for the Biafran cause, on the battlefield?? EUROBOMBER: Taa! Ojukwu absconded, abandoned his people and ran away. When he returned, he got his father's properties back but did not even bother to put pressure on govt to enable his people who had lost their assets in old Rivers state under the abandoned property saga, get their own properties returned to them. 21 Likes 1 Share |

Land of rising sun, we love and cherish, Beloved homeland of our brave heroes; We must defend our lives or we shall perish, We shall protect our hearts from all our foes; But if the price is death for all we hold dear, Then let us die without a shred of fear. Hail to Biafra, consecrated nation, O fatherland, this be our solemn pledge: Defending thee shall be a dedication, Spilling our blood we’ll count a privilege; The waving standard which emboldens the free Shall always be our flag of liberty. We shall emerge triumphant from this ordeal, And through the crucible unscathed we’ll pass; When we are poised the wounds of battle to heal, We shall remember those who died in mass; Then shall our trumpets peal the glorious song Of victory we scored o’er might and wrong. Oh God, protect us from the hidden pitfall, Guide all our movements lest we go astray; Give us the strength to heed the humanist call: To give and not to count the cost’ each day; Bless those who rule to serve with resoluteness, To make this clime a land of righteousness. 17 Likes |

People like my father fought for their freedom and they were to prepared to die for it. Those men did not fight for Ojukwu. As for Ojukwu, only a stupid soldier will allow himself to be captured or killed for nothing in a hopeless situation. A soldier who survives today, survives to fight another day. 7 Likes |
