Philip Effiong is the real civil war hero on the biafran side. He didnt run away, he stood his ground and surrendered because he knew the odds were stacked against the biafrans.

However, ojukwu, the initatior of the war, who once boasted that he would fight till the last drop of his blood, eventually ran away to Abidjan after commandeering a plane that was meant to airlift sick biafran children.

Alhaji Shehu Shagari later granted ojukwu amnesty in 1982. In 1983, ojukwu contested in the Senatorial election, he also contested in the 2003 & 2007 presidential elections and he lost woefully on all occasions.

It is highly preposterous that a man who fought against Nigeria, later came back to Nigeria and participated at various elections in the same country that he fought against.

lol ... Coward talking ... Hitler led many people to death and had a big chance of escaping before they capture Berlin but chose to stay by the people that died instead ... But coward ran away and you are here praising him after he has commanded many to their death ...
Its like praising our soilders that ldesssed like civilians leaving their weapons to abscond to Cameroon ...
Coward is a coward ...

If armed robbers invade your house and you have only one gun with limited bullets. You fire and they fire, but you hold out until the situation becomes hopeless. Do you stay back for certain death to prove you are brave or do you escape? That's the situation Ojukwu was in.

Ojukwu was fighting for the freedom of his people, Hitler was fighting to enslave people.

The American Time Magazine described the
scene in Kaduna on October 7, 1966: "In the
Northern capital of Kaduna, raging mobs of
Moslems armed with iron bars and broken
bottles surged through the streets shouting
anti-Ibo slogans. They killed at least thirty of
the Ibo aliens from the East. From the airport,
the troops fanned out through downtown
Kano, hunting down Ibos in bars, hotels and
on the streets. One contingent drove their
Land Rovers to the railroad station where
more than 100 Ibos were waiting for a train,
and cut them down with automatic weapon
fire. The soldiers did not have to all the
killing. They were soon joined by thousands of
Hausa civilians, who rampaged through the
city, armed with stones, cutlasses, machetes,
and home-made weapons of metal and broken
glass. Crying Heathen! and Allah! the mobs
and troops invaded the Sabon gari (stranger’s
quarters), ransacking, looting and burning Ibo
homes and stores and murdering their owners.

Ojukwu saw that he could escape to Abidjan and he used it.
Another place Ojukwu bleeped up was entering politics after returning from exile.
All he'd have done was keep a dignified silence and become a godfather

Go and read through the annals of war history. True generals stay the course, fighting alongside their men on the field of battle. Civilian presidents do not carry arms, leading troops into battle. Buhari has retired from the armed forces. If he had not, I would have asked him to also do his own bit by carrying out some of his military duties, and recovering captured territories from the enemy, in Borno.

I am not agitating for Biafra or calling for war but if Nigeria breaks tomorrow, the Igbos look forward to having very cordial relationship with our Efik/Ibibio brothere. These guys are the most reliable group of people in the Niger Delta.

Interesting. While one leader ran to Cote D'viore for safety, the other was busy fighting hard. At the end of the day, little is known about this true war hero.

Guy, give it up! sad 'Tactical withdrawal' kwa..... to achieve just what exactly?? shocked shocked And for how many years?? Go on, let us know how many years Ojukwu spent in exile during his tactical withdrawal and what he achieved in exile, within those years for his people.

Ok, while the war was raging, why didn't Ojukwu allow his own soldiers to carry out 'tactical withdrawals' instead of dying at the war front, as federal forces were closing in on them??

I recommend that everyone should read Philip Effiongs "Biafra: My story". Philip Effiong was an admirable man. He stood by his boss through thick and thin. It should be noted that had Ojukwu stayed back at the end of the war, he would have been caught and killed for nothing but the Nigerian authorities had no beef with Philip Effiong. It should be noted that Philip Effiong joined the Nigerian Army in Enugu in 1945.

I'm happy that when he died, Biafrans went to Ibinio Obong to give him an unforgettable burial.

So whose fault was it ? Ojukwu couldnt equip his army properly, he couldnt feed his civilians adequately and he was boasting before the commencement of hostilities that he has the largest army in black africa and that the other side(Nigeria) would be shocked as to what they would get from him.

3MCDO suffered minimal casualty before Operation OAU(Owerri, Aba, Umuahia). It was a mission hinged on Adekunle's over bloated ego after the spectular success his division recorded in chasing the biafran occupiers away from the Niger Delta areas. It was not part of the 3MCDO's initial battle plan. Adekunle ordered the Operation as an October 1st 1968 independence gift to General Gowon

Britain and USSR supported Nigeria, so also did France, Portugal, South Africa, Haiti, Zambia, Gabon, Tanzania, Ivory Coast support Biafra

hmmm! So you are now confirming Chinua Achebe's "THERE WAS A COUNTRYA." Some people and tribes were crying and wailing when this book was first released that there wasnt any country. An almost 3 yrs old country that produced two presidents. Ojukwu actually contested the presidency in other to brake what this young generation of biafra calls Zoo. SS vp and pred. Efik/ibibio biafrans?

For you to know how pathetic and cowardly ojukwu was; he was never at the front through out the duration of the war. He was running from one under ground bunker to another.

After enugu the capital of biafra fell, three months into fighting, ojukwu ran to umuahia. After umuahia fell, he ran even deeper into the ibo heartland until he eventually ran way to abidjan
