CabbieAC: You should look at the opportunity cost. A young man abroad, Yoruba or not has a fast track to fame and status through sports than he has being a contractor or a politician. In Western societies, services have replaced hand production and artisanship, there are more offices than there are factories. There are more plastic and disposable cutleries in circulation than there are silverwares and stainless heirlooms. If you live in US or England, when was las time you saw a china set? Commodity trading and prospecting is gradually being displaced by sports betting and forecasts. The risk is low, you can place bets in multitude of arrays and even call for derivatives against your own odds....if you know the teams well the chance of loosing out on sport betting is low...its a win win! So big game sports and physical brags for championships and fanfare is a economy booster for communities and for individuals. Hence sportsmen in West are semi gods....and every boy want to be in the field to be worshipped. For every one Kobe or Des there are one hundred competitors cut off in trials. We dont never hear about them. There are many that commit suicide because they cant face the rejection and ridicule in their community. Many turn to drug abuse. So, you get my gist....sports abroad pays well but along the path to the arena there are many victims, maimed, dead, ruined that are left forgotten and abandoned! Amongst the many pressures we already place on little ones growing up....let's not add sports to their plate. 3 Likes |

Mayor made a good point yet I think there's no crime in trying. We also have the talents. Boxing is another sport where I think our boys will do well if they have the facility to train and good boxing promoter. We have some good boxers. God this online............. Nigerian boxers lack supports that can make them world champion, says Ajose Former World Boxing Title Challenger, Olusegun Ajose, says Nigerians boxers lack the necessary support and adequate preparations that can make them world champions. The United Kingdom (UK) based-boxer told pressmen in Lagos on Thursday that these inadequacies were responsible for most of the country’s boxers’ dismal performance at the world championships. “Despite our passion for the country, there is little we can do at the world stage because without the necessary financial support and adequate preparations to win world championships. “The stake is very high at that level; it requires more than passion and love for the country’s boxers to win the world championship and make the nation proud,’’ Ajose said. He said that Nigeria had talents in various sports but lack financial resources to take on their counterparts from other countries at the international competitions. Ajose said that sports could be used to project the image of Nigeria within the international community. Ajose said that Nigeria has a long and proud history of boxing, “with the many benefits the sport can offer the country in terms of self-discipline and health for the youth. “It is hoped that President Muhammadu Buhari will support the initiative to deliver the country into a new era of World Champions,’’ Ajose said. He said that a detailed plan has been put together, which the boxers will deliver to the President. “The aim is to make Nigerian boxers World Champions in the next 18 months. “The specific aim is to ensure that the country’s world champions kick start a sporting legacy for the youth of Nigeria, which the whole country can be proud of. “It will engender national unity and bring sporting glory to the country, whilst also improving the country’s image internationally,’’ Ajose said. Another UK-based Nigerian boxer, Larry Ekundayo, said that lack of support had led to most Nigerian athletes not doing well at home. The two boxers were in the country to take part in the 2015 Diaspora Day in Abuja. The boxer’s manager, Ben Gray, said if the two boxers were British, they could have been world champions by now. “It’s a fact that these two fine Nigerians will have been world champions by now had they been Americans or Britons. “However, as they are Nigerians they have suffered lack of support from previous governments and faced horrendous racism overseas. “With the present administration, and the Nigerian Change Agenda in place, we hope we can deliver to the country great sporting success and deliver a plan for increased health and self-respect for Nigerian youths,’’ Gray said. Also, Bimbo Afolayan, the Special Adviser to the boxers, said that the boxers were invited to be part of this year’s Diaspora Day celebration and see how they can help Nigerian youths in the field of sports. “They are two individuals that make Nigeria proud in UK, and we know that they can be sources of motivation for home-based boxers. “The challenge now is how they can work with the media and governments toward progressing in their chosen career,’’ Afolayan said. Meanwhile, the duo of Ajose and Ekundayo said that they would visiting the national camp to motivate the boxers preparing for the forthcoming 11th All Africa Games. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/nigerian-boxers-lack-supports-that-can-make-them-world-champion-says-ajose/ |

IyaIode: Agberos are everywhere, Madam. You'd know this if you have been to other parts of the country. Go to Onitsha motor parks and see a wild type of "Agberoism". You will know our boys are still learning. Or you think they don't have NURTW and RTEAN in other parts of the country? We are into sports too, you know. Segun Toriola and Funke Oshonaike dominate in male and female table tennis respectively. Yorubas dominate extensively in boxing. The average Yoruba guy in Mushin is a natural boxer. I also follow Chess in Nigeria and trust me, Yorubas dominate there too, even though the current top rated Nigerian chess player is one Kighiga Bomo from Bayelsa state, I think. We might not be too visible in football, when compared to the Flatheaded ones but trust me, Yorubas do well in other sports. It might interest you to know that the present female African footballer of the year, Asisat Oshoala is Yoruba. Nigeria's leading all-time goal scorer is Rasheed Yekini, followed by Segun Odegbami. Yorubas sef dey try for Football ooo! 1 Like |

Rashidi Yekinni's team was made of Okocha, Eguavoen, Amokachi, Amunike, Rufai, Finidi all of whom were stars in their own rights. naijababe: Hey, you don't expect all the players to be Yoruba nowww. Do you want to be an Anikanjopon ni? Okocha and Amuneke are Igbo, Eguavoen is from Edo, Amokachi from Benue and Finidi from Rivers. I think the 1994 squad was evenly and fairly dispersed among the popular tribes. And for your info, Peter Rufai is Yoruba. |

naijababe: Why do we dominate the professions - law, accounting, engineering, architecture, and so on? Because it was groomed into us as the only path to success. If sports was groomed into us as vigorously as we were constantly reminded of becoming a successful doctor, lawyer, accountant....we would today dominate the field....whether or not our constitution is a fit. We thrive well as the "thinkers" and "strategists" than we would as the "toiler". The gist is this...if we must pound our future generations into sports we should groom and remind them to be "team owners", "team coaches".... This does not exclude us from having Yoruba players in the field....but we will, through the vision rule and dominate professional sports in Nigeria, and control theleagues and all the value propositions from stadium contracts to concession stands. You feel me darling? |
Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by Nobody: 1:15pm On Nov 20, 2015 |
MayorofLagos: Now you agree with Iyalode that the idle among us just drift to agberoism! Dunno if it was you or Tupac who mentioned that the average guy at Mushin Olosha is a natural boxer, why aren't these guys representing us? . We can't all be thinkers and strategists, we are leaving behind those who aren't is the point. I am guessing that it is getting better now but you can't disagree that your average middle-class Yoruba parent almost always give up on wards who show slower aptitude in academics and when they don't give up, the child will drift from one course to another wasting valuable time and energy just because mummy and daddy desire so. What would it take for the same parent to nurture a sporting talent if present ? 2 Likes 1 Share |

tupacshakur: Why did you omit Obafemi Martins and Yakubu? Most people don't even know how good Martins used to be...the guy just never fulfilled his real potentials. Martins ought to have been greater than Drogba and Eto on the African all time great list - he was that good. I guess the fact that he was too distracted in trying to be "cool" and "hiphop" - and I think the death of his mum also messed him up. I followed his career from Inter when he had that break-out season as a teenager, in the Seria A and Champions league - that was when Inter Milan was my favourite team on Pro Evo. I believe he's also the only Nigerian player to have ever made the list of the best young footballers in the world. And he was top-5 on that list. I had the opportunity to watch him play live for Nigeria with my pops in 2004 against Ireland. I think that was his first game for Nigeria. This guy scored one of the most brilliant solo goals I have ever seen - similar to the one George Weah scored. He took the ball from his own half and went past players - before slotting in a brilliant goal. Also, don't forget all the brilliant goals he scored in the EPL, despite the lack of support. That is my guy. Yakubu was decent as well. Though he's more of a journeyman but you can't deny his record. He'll always be Harry Redknapp's guy lol. |

Nice contributions.I wasn't even expecting folks to show interest in this topic I slightly agree with Tupacshakur on boxing but our dominance is local. Most of our boxers fall like a pack of cards when they get to the bigger stage.Well..Home-based Nigerian boxers don't do well generally so I won't limit it to just Yorubas Samuel peter,Ike Iheabuchi, hogan bassey and Lateef kayode all had to move abroad to step up their career because we don't have the facilities As per table-tennis,Toriola is the best thing to come out of Africa but he's always at the olympics to make up the numbers.we need world-beaters. As per football, I see some people talking about the fact that its not the only sport we have in Nigeria. In Nigeria, football is the most important and If we are not doing well in the most important one, then its safe to say we're not doing well generally. Its like failing maths and passing Home econs For me I believe the reasons why Yorubas are not well represented are 1.Tribalism(I know a lot of people won't agree with this) 2.Sponsorship Yorubas are as good as any other tribe when it comes to football and I'm speaking from experience. The talents are there In trials,If you no get money, dem no go pick you .Those boys you see representing us are not the best we have in Nigeria. They are the ones who have the money. 2 Likes |

Mohammed Fawehinmi, eldest son of the late foremost legal practitioner, Gani Fawehimi, has lambasted the governors of Oyo, Ondo and Osun states over their alleged failure to develop the states. He specifically demanded the impeachment of the governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, by the state House of Assembly. Mr. Fawehinmi stated this on Thursday while delivering a lecture at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. The lecture, entitled “Youths Impact in Free and Fair Elections,” which was second in the series, was organized in honour of the legal practitioner, who died in September 2009. According to him, the three south west states have remained at the same level of decadence because of the refusal of the governors to make any meaningful impact since the governors assumed office. “Oyo State is a shadow of herself from what it used to be,” Mr. Fawehimi said. “Everywhere is very bad and it is something that is unbecoming, I clamour for impeachment of Oyo state Governor Ajimobi” “Since he is incapable he should be impeached from the government. The last few years in Oyo has been very bad. I passed through the place and I was unhappy.” He also said there had been no major improvement in the State of Osun under Governor Rauf Aregbesola, “except that when I got to a part of the state I saw a new statue; everything looks unchanged, nothing so new or no improvement.” He also accused Governor Olusegun Mimiko for alleged “underperformance.” Mr. Fawehinmi said but for the efforts made by the students of the university, his father would have died without earning the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. According to him, it was the students of the institution who awarded the late lawyer the title “Senior Advocate of the Masses,” that they now conferred on him the prestigious title of SAN.” He said, “My father would have died a man without the apex title and would have being robbed of what he deserves if not for the effort of OAU Students. “Nobody knows the role OAU students played; it would have been miserably painful for my family.” Mr. Fawehinmi also accused OAU management of falling below standard and not paying attention to areas of needs of the university. He claimed that the institution had lost its glory and could not boast of the standards it was known for. “I went to the hostels in your school (OAU) and it is a shame. When I saw the living conditions of students, it is even dangerous for your health as students. It is time to call the attention of the Federal Government to the sorry state of this school.” The President of OAU Students Union, Omotayo Akande, criticized the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari over its plan to pay N5000 to each unemployed Nigerian youth. He said, “We have lots of decadence in the education sector that needs attention and all the president can think of is investment of over one trillion naira in paying young unemployed graduates, does he mean graduates are worth just N5000? He is only compounding woes of Nigerian youths.” www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/193491-gani-fawehinmis-son-slams-swest-governors-over-alleged-underperformance.html |

We must keep a noble pace and continue to better our status. Our parents and their parents did not instruct us to be court clerks or health records clerk, not the draughtsman, not the ledger keeper, not foreman. Their marching order was ...lawyer, doctor, architect, accountant, engineer! It's our turn and the big money maker ahead of us is sports....we must push for decision making! |
