Yes. You can.

How do I know?

I do the same thing.

It's hard to get time in for it. But it's all about determination. I've finished learning all about the Heap just today.

You can do it bruh.

Thanks for all those vouching for me above. It has been done by even people before me, and myself so i know it is possible.
@topic: it is very possible, others before me have done it, and I did it too. It was only until this year that I completely left medicine to practice programming full-time due to situation demands.

But practicing medicine and programming together is another thing. If you are a professional programmer truly, you will be getting quite a lot of demands and SHOULD NOT HAVE TIME TO PRACTICE MEDICINE AFTER GRADUATION, PLUS PROGRAMMING IF DONE PROPERLY WILL GIVE YOU MORE MONEY THAN MEDICINE.

This means that after graduation, you will need to select your direction. You cannot be doing residency program and be practicing professional programming at the same time - there is just no time for that.

So for myself and the other dudes i know to get away with it, always end up leaving one for one - and it is usually medicine that we leave in the end.

I feel good reading that man.

I guess I'm what you could call an advanced beginner... I'm doing C++.

I've always wanted to code, I was coding BASIC back when I was 8, but it didn't interest me. I was a kid, it was only natural. Now I wanna get real serious with this. Plans are to hop on Cocos2d-x and use that to make Android games. My brother is ahead of me in that regard, and I am ready to follow up with it.

Hello,

Can a student of Medicine learn programming at the side

I love the idea behind programming but I am got admitted to study Medicine as a course. I only wish to know if I can combine Medicine study and practicing coding at same time?? Can I be an intermediate programmer in my 6(six)years of studying medicine?? I intend studying and practicing coding everyday for 5-6yrs but giving greater attention to my medical course as that was what I got admission for...I just want to know if it is possible. If 6 yrs is too small or too much...I have dreams of creating some good apps that will be used in the medical and health niche and I cant accomplish it without knowing programming...

Your intelligent replies will be greatly appreciated

My goodness thats one good thing you could ever do
learning both and then integrating programming to optimize your medical praction
But i think the question should be on How..

Are u sure programmers earn more than doctors? What evidence do you have for this?

I disagree with dhtml18.
I'm sorry but you won't be good with both. The programming universe just doesn't work that way, maybe after you've graduated and don't want a job in the hospital then you can focus on being a good programmer?

Why do people get so bias like that? Well this is the truth, people will only encourage you because that's what they also want to believe.

Programming is not just a thing you can just learn and pick up just like that, its not some rubbish, it requires years of practice just like medicine, programming is a science, it's also an art... I agree some noobs on here have made programming look cheap and a anybody can learn thing, but programming is not the same as coding or developing (which sometimes require you to use existing codes that was programmed by someone else), i don't know if you grok my concept, but if you were destined to be a programmer in the first place, you will rarely have a passion for medicine and you'll either study computer science or engineering.

When you say you disagree with me - on what point, i made a lot of points above.

But the most important one is the answer to the thread - YOU CAN LEARN MEDICINE AND PRACTICE CODING AT THE SAME TIME.

But when we are talking of working as a professional programmer and a doctors at the same time - that one is a story for the gods.

I DID NOT SAY THAT YOU CAN BE A MEDICAL DOCTOR PRACTICING CLINICAL MEDICINE AND A PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMER AT THE SAME TIME!

Says who? Who has made you 'the' authority on the limitations of each and every human being in the world? Different people have different affinities for different things and some people can be exceptional pilots, doctors, and programmers at the same time. A thing that holds true for one person does not mean it holds true for 'ALL' human beings.

Booyakasha:

Programming is actually a thing you can pick up like that, this comment is extremely harmful and discouraging to aspiring programmers. What is so hard or cryptic about programming? I tutored software development for over 3 years and I have taken people of different ages, gender, and orientation (science, humanities etc.) from noob to pragmatic (solutions delivering) programmer in less than a year. Of particular importance is a young man in the company I currently work. He was employed into my team to interface between the developers and clients and help with client integrations, not only has he never programmed in his life, he majored in Business Administration, but I converted him into a developer and now I have him committing super clean code to our repo and all in under 6 months.

Booyakasha:

It is never too late in life to change or learn a new thing, and there are things harder than programming that are still being mastered by anybodies.

Booyakasha:

but programming is not the same as coding or developing (which sometimes require you to use existing codes that was programmed by someone else),
Erm! programming is actually the same thing as coding or developing, and I am yet to see a developer that builds everything from scratch. Everytime you use a library you are actually building off code written by others. It is often even beneficial to see how other's solved a problem because reading code (clean code) helps you as well.

Booyakasha:

i don't know if you grok my concept, but if you were destined to be a programmer in the first place, you will rarely have a passion for medicine and you'll either study computer science or engineering.
This is so not true. AT ALL! Humans are passionate about different things, I know I want to be so many things that for the sake of my responsibilities I have put on hold. I am yet to meet a programmer that is not passionate about other things as well as programming, and after a couple of years you might actually see something else to be more attractive.

Stop being contradictive here, it will only make you look less intelligent, i am not the authority of everyone in the world.
Keep preaching to your own choir cos it makes you feel good about yourself.
But what you think programming is, is not what it really is. Keep being a code manager, code management is simple anyway.

PS: Programming is not same thing as coding, if you doubt this, then there's no point of educating you more... go back to being a shitty car dealer.

You left yourself open to insults with the comment you just posted. But I refuse to condescend to the level you are obviously comfortable playing in. My abilities/skills as a software engineer (or code manager as you call it) is evident in my bank account. I don't need acknowledgement from you to feel good about myself.

I doubt there is anything I am interested in that you could educate me about. I have an Advanced Diploma, PPL, Bachelors Degree, and Master's Degree in Software Engineering, I Studied Medicine for years before that, and I am a kickass superhero ninja programmer in over 5 Languages with years of experience and innumerable projects and references to show for it. If all you have been typing is the so called education, sorry I am not buying.

Read through my post, I don't throw insults at anybody, and I refrained from doing same here, so if you have been offended by anything I typed then all I can say is.... The truth is a bitter pill to swallow.

Y'all should keep calm and stop e-fighting . . . But without doubts, programming isnt the same thing as coding . . .
Just like the words "geek" and "nerd" . which might mean the same thing to outside individuals . . but to the people intended
their true definitions are miles apart . . .
A coder basically writes codes, build them, test and debug and deploy them using programs intended to make the job easier. . which were infact built by programmers and not coders.
Think of it, as coding being the easy step to becoming a programmer. While coding is just one aspect of programming, a true programmer has to pass through.
Sound complicated right?

You don't get it sir . .
Coding is just one part of programming a true programmer has to learn. . There are other herculean tasks ahead . . . in a programming environment. . . .
But you can actually learn coding , and stop there . . which is what, sadly, 90% of Nigerian "self-acclaimed programmers" are . .
Learn 1,2 3 or 8 languages and code with it . . . and it ends there . . .

Programming on other hand, doesn't end with just writing a school mgt software with PHP in Netbeans . . .using Laravel

It surpasses that .. Hope u get it now . .

They are the same thing don't mind all these noobs on NL gringringrin

You can combine both but reduce your code learning to 1hr or 2hrs per day cos medicine requires hard work, care, focus e.t.c

While

Programming requires hardwork, focus, reading, testing, debugging, sitting and staring at your computer for long hours ,maintaining your sanity when your code doesn't work, more reading and testing to keep yourself updated cos programming languages always have updates. e.t.c
