Police say protesters burned a mosque, killed a policeman Protesters demanding release of jailed separtist leader Protesters in Nigeria’s southeastern city of Onitsha demanding the release of a jailed pro Biafran-independence leader, killed a policeman, burned down a mosque and attacked vehicles, according to the police, while a separatist organization said nine were killed by security forces. “People operating under the aegis of Indigenous People of Biafra and Massob have held people to ransom for two days by blocking highways,” Okechukwu Ali, Anambra state’s police spokesman, said by phone from the state capital, Awka. “They attacked a policeman, collected his AK-47 and shot him dead.” At least nine people were shot dead by a combined team of police and soldiers that tried to disperse protesters from the streets of Onitsha, IPOB said on its Radio Biafra website. Police are still collecting information on casualties and will give more details later, Anambra police spokesman Ali said. Tensions have been rising in Nigeria’s oil-rich southeast after IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu was detained by the state security police in October on allegations of committing treasonable offenses. Africa’s largest crude producer fought a 30-month civil war from 1967 to 1970, when the southeastern region, home to the ethnic Igbo group, one of Nigeria’s main three, made a failed attempt to create an independent state of Biafra. Between one million and three million people were estimated to have died in the war, which broke out following a coup in 1966 led by mainly ethnic Igbo junior officers against a government dominated by northern Muslims. That prompted a revenge coup six months later and the massacre of tens of thousands of Igbos across northern Nigeria. Groups including IPOB and Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra have renewed campaigns for the region’s independence from Nigeria after former military ruler and northern Muslim, Muhammadu Buhari, won presidential elections in March. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-12-03/nigeria-separatist-protesters-clash-with-police-in-onitsha-city |

Disarmed and murdered a policeman? Burnt a mosque? Destroyed investments? Now that the 'peaceful' facade of the protest has been ripped to shreds, the military and security forces have every impetus to fully engage the criminal vandals and arsonists, paving the way for a possible state of emergency with military governors in the region. The region complaining of underdevelopment after the war is about to further destroy the little it has managed to build. May the souls of the unfortunate victims rest in peace. Such is the stupidity of blind rage. |

Kastonkastroll: They just made the Presidents job a whole lot easier. Now they can be effectively contained after attacking and killing agents of the government. |

BluMalam:But reports here in Nigeria has it that our trigger happy policemen started the killings of the "peaceful" ipob touts. I kinda find this one very bias. Is like a one sided report. Anyway is not even my headache Many of us told them earlier, there is no way you can fight a legitimate government and win in this our 21st century especially in a country like ours were we are battling an insurgency. The FG can easily/simply label the massob/ipob groups as a terrorist organization and the international community will swallow it. Right now the international community are very sympathetic to Nigeria because of boko haram, and the solidarity is still given to Nigeria. This is just an entirely wrong time to clamour for any kind of country in Nigeria. The wise ibos know this. 2 Likes |

The thing is, if biafra doesn't become sovereign and peace is restored all this destruction would be a loss for the SE in the long run. If biafra becomes sovereign, it would still be in tumbles, that would be the first of many in their nation due to the igbo no be only you sabi chop mentality. |

We already know that you all will cook up lies to feed to gullible readers but the truth will always win at the end. You all were ashamed that the IPOB's protest were hugely peaceful and successful so you had to look for other ways to discredit them. You can't get any either. Our records of how your security have been killing our massob people over the years have well been documented. Can you erase those ones? Our IPOB members you killed few last month are well recorded with proofs. Nigeria can never survive this. The demonic people who would rather speak ill of the peaceful freedom fighters should know that what goes around comes around. We will not give up on biafra because only her can guarantee the safety of our lives and properties which up to present are of little consequence in Nigeria. A similar protest should be held in Lagos. This will be mother of all protest as the big media houses will be forced to cover it. The importance of our quest requires that bold steps be taken to achieve our aim. Death to this Nigeria. 3 Likes |

Sorry brother it's only an educated person that thread the right in resolving and getting things done, most of those folks protesting only went to primary nd at most stopped at secondary education level, due to one reason or the other but it might interest you to know majority of them snubbed school cause of the love of money, now their elites are not been fair to them, instead of theses protesters to start by handling their elites who are the bane and master architect of their problems they instead chose to fight Nigerians and the Nigerian government, truth is every man alive have his or her own battles they fail to realize we the masses are all victims irrespective of tribe, region or religion. References include Alamesia who ate rat poison and James ibori currently serving prison term in UK Oh , and GEJ who didn't put just one transformer at Otuoke let alone good road Yet 2 trillion was used for campaign |

Kingsolex1:. If I say u are senseless now you will call it insult. Which elites are you talking about? Are they as elitist as Northern rulers that have been in power for 38 and half years out of 50 as at 2010. Are Boko Haram fighting their elites or they are killing Christians and burning their churches? Have you ever preached that same gospel to them? The truth is that the system here is the problem and those holding to the longer end of the stick has refused to any form of restructuring of the polity |
