This angry twitter user took to social media to vent out his frustrations on what he termed the disgraceful attitude of the immigration officials at the Muritala Mohammed Airport, Lagos. He alleged that they deliberately delayed passengers in the bid to extort cash bribes ranging from $50 to $150 from passengers, and failure to oblige them means your journey will be delayed as your passport will be seized

This is extortion point blank.
Big disgrace and embarrassment to Nigeria as a whole.
These are the first people that international travellers meet when they reach Nigeria.
First impressions are very necessary.
Why frustrate an innocent person just because of $50?

On Sunday, these officials will go to church and pay offering with stolen money and thank God. Who are they deceiving?

some of them will even go on-line to judge others yet they are not better.

One thing we should do is to report this people, note their names and location and publish them on social media and nairaland. They may not be punished but hopefully shame will catch them.

If I were president, corrupt officials would be summarily executed on the regular. Okay, maybe not summarily, and maybe I won't execute them, but they will live to rue the day they erred.

I still don't understand why/how immigration can seize the passport of a traveler who hasn't committed an immigration offence. How is that possible?! I know some of the immigration officials are corrupt, but surely, they can't just seize a passport with a legitimate visa.

I heard of instance where the immigration officials were charging an expatriate triple the amount for Over stay a charges.

It was a Banker who heard the gist and saved the expatriate from being shortchanged.

My own experience.

2 years ago I rushed into the Country, and since I was using a Visa, got stamped in but did not check how long I was stamped in for.

I just thought it was 3 months, as it is obtainable in most countries.

Usually I never stay for more than 10 days in Nigeria.

I spent 32 days, and on my way back. Was surprised when the Immigration woman told me to step to one side, and that I had over stayed my Visa with 2 days, so therefore I am an illegal immigrant in Nigeria.

I nearly fell down laughing. Me wey be confirmed Lagos guy, na me these guys wan obtain.

at the end of the day 20k Naira exchanged hands. If you see Handout wey them bring make I fill and sign say I be illegal immigrant and don overstay? I begin beg.

Last year I was prepared. This time I had a Nigerian Passport.

On my way out. Was asked for my Nigeria passport, I said excuse me please but I am leaving.

They said they needed to see it, to verify how I came into the country before stamping me out.

I gave it them. I was told again, oga step go this side. Wetin again? We cannot read your Nigeria Passport in our system because your bio data chip is scratched or broken.

So, we cannot stamp you out. Thinking I am smart, I said but I still have another I year of Nigeria visa on my other passport, use that to stamp me out.

she said no, you were stamped into the Country with a Nigerian Passport.

I started begging again. Two straight years of begging, and she refused and demanded for 50k.

50k I asked? She said yes. I asked her, abeg una get mat? She looked at me like is he high? I said madam bring mat, I no wan travel again. I wan sleep here, since that 50k go hard.

Eventually they succeeded in taking 2k from me. No matter how prepared you are at our Airports, they know how to get you.

Seconded. Those immigration officials are daylight criminals. They keep begging people for money and even threaten us sometimes. Bubu must do something about this when he's decided to return from his world tour and face his responsibilities.

I have always said it the Nigerian government needs to do something about the officials at the airport both custom and immigration .
The bad eggs amongst them are more described as uniformed beggers who make statements like:

Oga anything for us?!

Oga wetin you carry?!

Oga wetin you bring come?!

Oga make we buy coffee?!

You have many pound you can give us one make we too enjoy.

These are statements that shouldnt be coming out of Officers of the federal republic of Nigeria.

The psychological orientation of most of the officer is wrong. They feel cause they are under payed they can make times 3 of their salary if they are sharp.
If you are not comfortable with the salary I believe you should quit and avoid taxing and making life uncomfortable for the citizens. Everyone is now exposed cause we see how officers of other country behave and comport themselves.

Sometimes, I just wish Buhari is still a soldier and not a democrat.... Now, he can't do anything without the courts(courts that are. Populated by corrupt officials). If na that time, the immigration officials won't even dare ask for bribe and if given, they'll decline. Biko can our constitution be suspended in corruption cases?

Lagos airport is just damn worst, i could remember paying 500 for sellotape at the airport and was the last person to board the flight cuz i refused to settle them, at first i was nervous but a man confidently told me the plane cant leave as long as i have checked in on their counter moreover one of the airline staff was following me but she coudnt say a word. I stood my ground and didnt pay anybody 1naira. They only called me names and i left with my money intact.

Only a mofo who never left the shores of Nigeria will post this kinda poo. This is not new in Lagos Airport and wont stop overnight, i had similar incident at the airport years back i left naija and PMB never thought of being in Aso rock then. So stick your noise deep into your arse

The poo starts from those who check your luggage before getting your boarding pass, but their own issue aint strong, the main thieves are those who check your details on one computer thats almost dead, immediately they notice you a first timer, they will start passing your passport from one person to another telling you to settle before they clear you

Any time I pass through that place and see them taking advantage of young and first time travellers, I laugh.
Those green horns too dont help matters, because they always look guilty as if they have done something wrong.
I myself, sometimes feel as if they are using fake papers.
Confidence is the key, these custom people can smell the fear on you and then will latch on like sharks tasting the blood in the water.

You may not beleive it but I have experienced it and it wasn't funny. Immediately they see that ur passport is being used for international travel 4 the first time, they try to cash in on that. My advice 4 1st time travellers is not 2 convert all the money with them 2 dollars, leave some nairas unchanged and be using it 2 settle the greedy officials instead of missing ur flight
