jaybiz007:
Good morning house, I am glad to be here finally, after five years of rigorous drilling in civil engineering. With the grace of God, I was able to graduate with a first class, and currently awaiting nysc mobilization for batch A 2016.
I intend taking GRE exams since I was told it will come in handy for my postgraduate application in U.S varsities. Now, my questions are:
(1) Should I write the exam next month? mind you I just started preparation, using the few materials I got from friends.
(2) Is TOEFL necessary for both American and Canadian universities?
(3) Since I intend studying on scholarship, how can I go about it? (Am sincerely clueless on this)
cc: bigfrancis, justwise and several dons in the house too numerous to mention, please help a brother out.

You are on a very good path to obtaining multiple scholarships /graduate assistantship. Here's what you do. Don't be in a hurry to write the GRE. You might be very sound, especially with ur first class degree. But with inadequate preparation, u might flunk GRE. So don't be in a hurry. Take ur time.(Maybe about 2months)Prepare well, Ace the bloody exam. You Nigerian CGPA should put you on 3.5 or 3.6 /4.0 American scale. While you are preparing for your GRE, look for schools, I would encourage at least 4 schools. You would want these schools with their GRE codes handy on the exam day, so you can send your scores at once to them. Take the TOEFL too.. It is quite an easy exam. So you should book ur appointment for both of them. 2weeks is too much to prepare for TOEFL self. But try that. Most Good American schools and some Canadian ones need TOEFL.. The US Embassy ask for standardized test result too. And it make them see you as serious, if you take both exams. In my case I didnt need to take TOEFL, but I did. Just for the embassy sake. Although I ended up not being asked the standardized test questions though. Bottom line. Don't rush. You have time to prepare for fall admission. You should have written both ur exams by let's say February.
If you went to a federal school. I think a good advice would be to start processing ur Transcript now. Cos those people are evil. Same trend in most federal universities. My 2cents.

I got to the embassy around 6am and we were told to form a queue by 6:30 am.Non immigration applicants and immigration applicants were on different queues. I was ushered in to where documents were checked around past seven and I was through less than 10 minutes. We were told to sit and we waited till 8AM before we were ushered in to the THEATRE OF DREAMS.
On getting there I saw the immigrants sitting comfortably while d non immigrants were standing. I did my biometrics and joined the queue to face the vo in window 9.He is the only one attending to the non immigrant applicants and he denied a lot of people.
He granted visa to the guy before me and I was praying for God's favor and mercy.
The transcript is below.
VO: Good morning
Me: Good Morning Sir
vo: pass me your documents(and I did) and place your hands on d machine(I complied).
vo: Why are you going to Cameron university?
Me: Cameron university is a public university with a rich history of academic excellence....(cuts me
Vo: rich history of what!
Me: rich history of academic excellence that offers over 50 degrees through two year, four year and graduate programs. The university has a 20:1 Faculty-student ratio and they offer non-resident tuition waiver to international students with strong GP after evaluation with WES.Also,Oklahoma's weather is suitable for quick adaptation of international students to their new environment as the weather is similar to that of Nigeria(he cuts me).
vo:Why would you choose a school because of its weather when there are other schools like Harvard.
me: the weather is one of the several factors I applied to Cameron but I told you about the non-resident tuition waiver which I got.
Vo: Oklahoma is just a state on its own in the united States and I wonder what attract you to Cameron. Do you have a relative, friend or family member there!
me: No sir.
vo: OK how did u get to know about the school?
Me: I work with an international education advisory company (I gave a profile of the company) and the company has a database of schools in the united States.
Vo: Did you take SAT.
ME:I'm a graduate applicant and I wrote GRE.
Vo:Can I see ur score report?
I passed it to him and he glancing at it.
Vo: whats your score in analytical writing?
me: it's 4
vo: what's your total score?
me:294
Vo: but I can't see your see your score(he was glancing both front and back of the report and I told him to pass it to me so that I'll show it to him and I showed it to him).
Vo: when did you write the GRE?
Me:January 23rd 2015(that's the day my landlady died and it coincided with the date I wrote the exam)
Vo: I would issue u the visa bla bla bla( I went blank instantly and was waiting for my form for collection of my documents). As I collected the form I was rushing out of the hall and he called me back;as I came back he glanced at his computer for some seconds and he said "you can go".
PS: Some F1 applicants dressed shabbily to the embassy wearing palm slippers with a Jean trouser and their shirt tucked out.
Again write standardized tests, they could be your saving grace and finally, pray, pray and pray.
I would want to use this medium to thank the gurus in the house for their corrections and contributions,God bless you all.

Your GRE score will obviously determine to a large extent what schools you can get into. But you can check the following out:

UT Austin-top
UT Dallas, UT Arlington-mid
Texas tech-safe

With a PhD application, you will most likely get funding in any of those. MSc will depend on faculty funding/Professor...

You're going to have to wait till you take GRE, then you reevaluate.
UT Austin, you're going to need a score above 320. It's tough but doable if you're good.

Hey guys I need your humble input please. For those that registered for paper-based GRE, please how long did it take ETS to respond to you? I registered for the paper-based GRE at the centre at Aba, then the form was posted to Princeton. Please how long does it take for ETS to get back to candidates?
