Should New Calls For Biafra Worry Nigerians? BBC by Earthkumy(m): 11:18pm On Dec 07, 2015 |
In our series of letters from African
journalists, Mannir Dan Ali looks at the
resurgence of a secessionist movement that
supports the creation of a breakaway state of
Biafra in Nigeria.
The last few weeks have seen thousands of young
people trooping to the streets of southern Nigeria
to protest about the continued detention of a
leading Biafra activist, Nnamdi Kanu.
Both new and old media are full of views and
reports on the renewed agitation for the short-
lived Biafran republic.
If it is not the report of the latest city to host the
noisy protest by the mainly ethnic Igbo young
men under the banner of the Indigenous Peoples
of Biafra (IPOB), it may be some hot exchanges on
social media about the different interpretation of
the event.
The Nigerian military's warning of dire
consequences for anyone who tries to carry out
what they refer to as treasonable acts, has also
been getting attention.
Many Nigerians, with the deadly Boko Haram
insurgency in their minds, are trying to
understand what is going on, asking why now and
what does it all mean?
The latest protests were triggered by the
detention of Mr Kanu, the UK-based leader of the
IPOB.
He came to Nigeria last month and was arrested
by the authorities, accused of treason.
Security sources say he was arrested for
broadcasting hate speech both on the internet
and through a banned London-based radio
station called Radio Biafra, which he has been
using to promote his call for the creation of a
Biafran nation.
He has already appeared in court but is still under
detention as his trial is yet to get off the ground. www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-34911465?ocid=socialflow_twitter 1 Share

Earthkumy:From the above 1. kanu is an activist not a terrorist 2. the protest is because of kanu's detention not GEJ's loss in the election 3. Kanus trial is being delayed while he is being illegally detained The world knows the truth!!! 19 Likes 2 Shares |

Earthkumy:why should it worry Nigerians in the first place? Biafra rose up and confessed that they're no more interested in the forced marriage with other tribes,is it a crime to seek for a divorce when your marriage is no longer favouring you and lacks peace in it? two can't walk together, unless they be agreed.Holy Bible Amos 3:3 5 Likes 1 Share |

It should worry us. Foreign nations are always willing to sell arms to any country so resources're easy to plunder. The same way it's common knowledge today which countries sponsored both sides during the civil war is the same way we'd find out what western nations sponsor boko baram 50 years from now. In the interest of peace uprisings like this should get pacified. There are 1001 ways this biafran issue can worsen whether the movement is political or otherwise. |

I blame our illiterate uncivilised President for this, by the way that Biafra man Nnamdi Kalu should be sentence to dead by hanging and his liveless body thrown to the vulture.....Quote Me and Die this year!!! |

Hello bbc, here's your answer. Nigerians would have been worried if: 1. The protests started under Jonathan's regime. Under his regime, members of the separatist movement were rounded up and jailed without trial for just having a meeting but no one rose in protest of condemnation of those actions. 2. They didn't say they'd only back down when one of their sons become a president of the Zoo. 3. They had demanded for their own country at the recently convened National Conference. 4. Their brothers and sisters didn't hold elective and "appointive" positions in the Zoo. 5. They didn't participate in the last general elections. 6. They didn't show interest in recently held elections in the Zoo. (#Bayelsa, #Kogi) 7. They had a land mass whose boundary has been agreed upon by their neighbors. Etc etc etc. Hope I've answered your question bbc? |

basilo101:1. IPOB has not been designated a terrorist/militant group yet so thats what he is called. That does not mean he is not thought to have committed treason in the process of being an activist 2. *yawns* 3. Did the report mention that? Funny thing is that Nnamdi Kanu is a British citizen and theu have not said anything about his incarceration. Does that not tell you the British government in unlooking and not even interested in getting involved? 1 Like |

Worry is certainly an understatement. They are afraid, jittery & scared stiff. They are already fighting dirty to scuttle it by using different tactics like intimidation, bribery, impersonation, arson, media brain washing et al but the funny thing is that the more they fight the Biafran agitation, the more the strugle gains momentum. In no distant time, they will become frustrated because you cannot defeat an ideology whose time has come. Viva Biafra!!! 2 Likes |
