I have never been married but you don't know anything about abusers. They just can't control themselves.

Abusers will abuse regardless. They always look for reasons to frustrate those close to them. The first attack could be add a result of her actions but the subsequent ones won't be.

Only therapy and genuine self-reflection might actually help

Your advice should have been that they should take a walk from the marriage forever as soon as they realised that their partner (man or woman) is abusive and he/she is not willing to seek real help.
