Dinocarex: the road was not commissioned (except you are refering to OBJ in the '70s). What Jonathan did was to flag off the reconstruction. |

menabadoo: Nigerians must learn to pay if they want good infrastucture. Plus when you are actually paying from your pocket, you are more mindful to keep government honest. Part of our problem is that because we don't pay taxes, we don't see the money that goes into govet as our collective money and we don't hold officials to account. On the issue of fuel tax, when you see the good roads in England, know that the UK motorist pays road tax, income tax, speeding fines, and despite paying the highest fuel tax in the world at over 70%, some of their roads are still tolled. You pay N1.50 fuel tax out of N87 /litre fuel, less than 2% and you are complaining, 70% of the cost of fuel for the UK motorist is tax. You pay peanuts you get monkeys. 2 Likes |

why don't the federal govt first improve the roads before asking people to pay another tax? Fashola is known for imposing tax and hardship on the poor people while giving free money, through inflated contracts and emoluments, to the rich few. Let the govt do the needful by rehabilitating our roads and expanding them, then we will know if there is no money to maintain them or build new ones. It's another way of enriching the rich. The Story of Lekki-Epe/LCC scandal is still fresh in our memory. By ensuring that the rich few, big businesses and multinationals pay their fair tax, re can generate more than enough to improve our Road networks and do other things... 1 Like |

KolaIbrahim: I don't think anybody would dare tax motorists on a poor road without 1st reconstructing the road. Also I was with you on the sham called the lekki-Epe toll till I realised the contract for the road and the toll collection was packaged under Tinubu. |

well, every lagosian should have known this from his 8year tenure as gov. Nigerians should expect more tolled roads, full privatisation of the power sector, and more unaffordable houses (lekki homes). I trust BRF to deliver. |

masseratti: lets understand this, govt taxes petrol but then gives subsidy on same petrol, it doesn't add up does it? Either way, according to govt official figues, govt spends more on petrol subsidy that it receives in petrol tax, so who's taxing who? 1 Like |

asuustrike2009: Distrusts in government is not limited to Nigeria so it's not an excuse not to pay taxes for a better life. Our problem is our inability to hold our leaders accountable. Me giving my money to Fashola means I'll definitely get good returns on my money in form of better infrastructures and better way of life. The best and most sophisticated bridge in Nigeria and west africa wasn't built by any federal government of country in Africa, it was built by Fashola. Fashola was the only governor with the capacity to provide uninterrupted power supply to government institutions from hospitals, to roads, bridges, courts and secretariat, something our 55 year old FG system or any any other state in Nigeria still can not do. Fashola delivered more projects than the FG and the other 35 states combined so I'll put my last kobo on him with zero hesitation.. 4 Likes |

lookandlaff:let them remove subsidy on petrol.I was never in for subsidy, let them sell the refineries, some other people foreign or local will build a new one, unless we can be as discipline like China, Korea or Japan our government has no business doing business, NNPC should be scrapped. Government should tax the oil companies directly. Am not sure if the American government has any business venture, they tax everything and anything, they give subsidy and bailouts to protect their economy which in other way protect Jobs and productivity they don't dash out money if you are unproductive and not paying tax. 2 Likes |

ogmaskman:nothing wrong with paying tax,the point is we are paying already, if we don't ask where or what the money we are paying for is being use for and a new one is introduced, its same thing, accountability is the only way out. |

The anger building up within me is immeasurable, why does our government love inflicting pains on the citizens and also exploit them?? They're grossly irresponsible, they only think of policy to collect from the masses and not one to empower them. for instance, If you drive a car in Nigeria you're in trouble, the only thing they provide is petrol, even with your money you won't see it to buy. The roads they are supposed to maintain are bad, after spending much to fix it they'd still stand on the road to check the paper/certificate of road worthiness as if the road itself is worthy of being plied Look at the number plate change,it's to exploit the masses, they'are planning to introduce speed limiter - also to exploit, as if the roads are even smooth.. . What will the government ever give freely to the Masses without strangulating them monetarily?? |

Re: Breaking: FG To Re-introduce Tolls – Fashola by Nobody: 9:13pm On Dec 08, 2015 |
arresa:The miracle working Fashola did same thing in Lagos and the rest is a story. You talk as if you are not in Nigeria where politicians keep deceiving people with policies that are not idealistic. First and foremost, the roads should be in good shape before imposing road tax on it's citizens. This is not Uk where they solely depend on tax to survive moreover their government had already make such amenity before it implemented it. That Fashola provided 24/7 electricity to selected project isn't a yardstick for him to wake up from his slumber an impose road tax or even think of it. Do you know the effect of such policies that will cost Nigerians? Common subsidy removal that the previous administration did, 80% of Nigerians wailed up to a point that the price of things went up. You think road transport owners wouldn't inflate their price thereby causing inflation? Or you think market men and women wouldn't add hike on transport to what they purchased?. A government doesn't wake from the moon to implement policies without looking at the side effect just like the way GEJ did in January 2012. |

masseratti: I agree with you. We pay both legal and illegal taxes and levies. But I think this one is straight forward. You collect tolls and we ask for good roads in return. They are directly connected. |

This is what happens when square pegs are fitted on round holes! In saner climes, roads are built first before they are tolled. Look at the lekki-Epe toll, the road has not been done half-way yet it's already being tolled. And that is exactly what Fashola intends to do. Money from tolls is used to maintain the already built roads. Moreover, not all sane countries have tolls. Here in Canada, I'm yet to see a toll gate. In the US, where there are tolls, the alternative roads are equally good and nearby but with traffic lights while the toll roads mostly are free from traffic lights. In my opinion, toll gates should come after complete road construction! 1 Like |

masseratti: I agree with you, infact I think petrol is too cheap. people will be more efficient in their journeys if petrol cost more, drivers would speed less if petrol cost more (you burn disproportionately more petrol above a certain speed), government will have more money for projects that truly benefir the masses instead of enriching a cabal if they removed subsidy. Everybody seems to be in favour of subsidy removal except Buhari, I think he's still stuck in the old school mentality on that aspect. 1 Like |
