As tongue-in-cheek as this question might sound, it is just as serious. This question is one that continues to ‘live’ on year after year and so far, it is yet to have a conclusive answer.
When a woman is ‘single’ and is not spoken for in any way, it’s natural that the ownership of her breasts is not at all questionable. Once she gets into a relationship, in this case, a sexual relationship, the ownership rights become arguable… The man immediately assumes co-ownership deeming it fit to use, misuse, demand for and play with them to his contentment and to the amusement and sometimes, pure chagrin of the woman. Not that he minds; To the best of his knowledge, the breasts belong to him!
During the relationship, the breasts serve as a playful and sometimes, recreational tool (so to say). Most importantly, it serves as a sexual tool which brings about the baby ultimately. Ironic, don’t you think? At the later stages of pregnancy, the man begins to mentally prepare himself for the separation from his good friends (do they ever?) and the woman begins to mentally prepare herself for the months of breastfeeding.
Cue in ‘The baby’. That little bundle of joy that changes the name of the game. From the time that they arrive, they waste no time in demanding their rightful possession and first source of survival – breast milk. Woe betides anyone who refrains from granting them their heart’s desire as often as they need it so naturally the man (sensible as he is ) steps back and lets the baby claim ownership.
Fast forward to a year of ‘hand-me-down’ breast time from the baby ( you dare not attempt to take it away completely! ), the man is ready to take over and rule but dear baby has refused to eat solid foods so Mom has to keep breastfeeding. The irritated and jealous man will have to suck it up until they can slowly, excruciatingly wean the baby off breast milk. When that e-v-e-n-t-u-a-l-l-y happens, he resumes ownership.
What does the woman stand to gain in all of this? She carries them proudly; she gains pleasure more often than not from the man’s ‘many uses’ and fulfillment from providing for and comforting her child while bonding with her child. If you ask me, she’s getting a good deal.
Imagine for a second that the breasts were just a pair made to make up the woman’s anatomy having no use or ‘purpose’; It would virtually be non-existent. The breasts exist because of their many functions and uses which are ultimately catered to the child for survival, the man for pleasure and his right as her partner and lastly, the woman for her looks, pleasure, mothering and all-round joy.
