Aliko Dangote is number one on Forbes 2015 list of the 10 richest people in Africa but there’s one other Nigerian on that list, and that’s Mike Adenuga, the chairman of Glo. The telecommunication magnate is from Ijebu Igbo in Ogun state and he’s the 7th richest man in Africa according to Forbes. But how has this benefited the people in his hometown?

Ijebu Igbo is hometown to many prominent Nigerians today. For instance, Akin Adesina, the former agriculture minister who’s currently president of the African Development Bank is from Ijebu Igbo but the town almost never benefits from this good fortune. The town’s the second largest in the state next to the capital Abeokuta, but is by far less developed than the capital. Illiteracy is prevalent; schools and hospitals lack basic facilities. There are only three banks in the whole town, and most people earn a low income.

Adenuga built a branch of his Equatorial Trust Bank in the town some years ago, but it closed after series of robberies and it’s been shut since then. Today the building is in weeds. “That’s the only thing he’s built in the town here,” says a resident named Taiwo. “Then he also recently built a church in memory of his late father at the outskirts. That’s all. He’s done nothing to help develop Ijebu Igbo.”

Folashade, another indigene, says “I expect a lot from a man of Adenuga’s calibre. He’s one of the richest people in Nigeria and one would think a man so wealthy would establish businesses here in his hometown to boost the economy and create jobs. “One would expect that he’d set up scholarship programs for poor students and build schools and hospitals where people can get quality healthcare and education at a low cost. He can afford to do these things. He just doesn’t want to do them. He’s not a philanthropist at all.”

Taiwo says too, “We have many of them in Nigeria who are so rich and famous, but they do nothing to give back to their home community and help young people who’re coming up so that these young ones too can be successful like them. If it’s not going to promote their business or career interests, they’re not ready to do it, and that’s a bad thing.”

Folashade says, “The other day Akin Adesina was here to campaign for Goodluck Jonathan when he was agric minister. He just met some people here in Oke Sopen where his father’s house is and gave them some money. That’s not going to change anything or make this town better.

“Look at how poorly developed our town is. The state government has left this place to waste because we have no king to fight for us and because the governor Amosun is an Egba man and we are Ijebu people who didn’t vote for him in elections. But what about our own sons and daughters who’ve prospered all over Nigeria? They too have clearly neglected us, including Mike Adenuga.”

Proudly from ijebu Igbo grin

Well I don't think mike adenuda should be blame because he isn't the federal govt. Blame gbenga Daniel that failed to perform as a governor.

You should also blame kaka too because he is from the soil.

Blame all the politicians from ijebu north and not the businessman

Adenuga isn't a government!

Mike is just like every citizen of Nigeria paying his tax like every Nigerian!

Moreover, the OP could have shown us the caption(s) of the whole town to know the extent of the underdevelopment of the town.

Mike Adenuga is an entrepreneur whose sole expectation is profit in anything he invests on.
Like the OP stated, "he has a branch of his bank, Equatorial Trust bank built there but was closed down due to the series of robbery several years ago". Just a bank could not thrive in the town, what would now be his fate if all his investment was established in the town?

However, as a wealthy indigene of the town, I think he needs investing on things that will bring about "growth center" in the town.

Bros, shey no be political leaders at all level get fault? Adenuga isn't a Governor, Chairman, Senator or even civil servant. He's a businessman... But if any shady deal is traced to him, we shall call for his head!

Straight on point. They want him to use his money and do what Government failed to do. And what the OP showed is poor people's homes. There are poor people everywhere even in Billionaires immediate family.

This is damn too shameful of most Nigerian Billionaires..... Facebook's owner, Mark Zuckerberg gave $100 million to Newark his hometown in New Jersey, I cannot forget the owner of Okin Biscuit who gave his community in Offa something to be proud of, what about Chief Ojo of Toyota motors who gave back to his community in Akure., Ifeanyi Uba comes to mind, he is even building a world class stadium in his village and many others doing well for their people. Adenuga had turned many into multi-millionaires through his Glo but he needs to do more to his community in Ijebu.

Wot is op saying? Is Mike a politician? David Mark was senate president for 8yrs and still a serving senator, wot has he done in his hometown? Obj was president for 8yrs, yet he failed to rehabilitate lagos-abeokuta express way. Mike is a businessman and not a politician.

Yes. But He might come in the next one thousand years.

Work hard. Save. Invest. Consider the poor and needy. Whether He comes or not, life must be enjoyed to the maximum without disturbing the progress of the other man.

If it were to be an Igbo man, this thread would be about how Igbos don't love themselves and how Biafra won't work because Igbos don't love themselves

You had to involve the East in your comment for you to be comfortable.
Seun, are you seeing this? Anti-biafran comments are embraced while pro-biafran topics are deleted and the user banned. This is so hypocritical. Your mods especially that myn44 is biased, look into it.
Thanks.

Am Igbo and am proud of it, am just saying our leaders has done worse
