I greet you all my people. E no easy o. I have had to leave freelancer for a while, there are other things that I needed my creativity. But, I am gradually getting back in the game. Christmas done show o, boiz gaz quickly hussle for some cash, elegushi is calling. Nice to see new faces, good to hear about the wedding and to know that the gurus are still popping in.

What I will just say is that this job requires some creativity and it ultimately rests on you to find your bearings. The gurus have done their part; they've already taught us how to do basic swimming, it is left to us to decide if we want to swim with the backstroke, butterflystroke, breaststroke or anyother style. For me, freelancer is cool but I see it more as a means to an end. I might not make as much as I should but I am improving myself on something else.

What I will say is that you should try and go the extra mile in satisfying your clients and invest in stuffs that will make your freelancing career much more easier and more efficient.

In another vein. If u guyz shd visit the nairaland frontpage, you will see a thread where they blaming and cursing the president for the free fall of the naira against the dollar. In my freelancing mind I am like "pmb, abeg no mind the ekpa haters, let the free fall continue...pmb for life president!"

Yes o, my brother. This is why it is good to work online. However, it will also affect the purchasing power, but that one na small matter.

Get yourself a foreign Paypal and sell funds to trusted ppl from the importation thread who buy in bulk you would see people who need as much as $1000, $2000 or even $5000 and you dictate the rate. You could as well do pay for me service for your friends who you know like to shop on foreign sites. They would gladly buy at #220/#230 when Gtb charge #269 per $ (as of two days ago when i paid for a service on fiverr).

Aside that i see no other way you would benefit from the exchange rate rise.

Hello, sorry it took a while to respond. But here you go:


Web design and programming are two different things but they tend to get lumped to together.

A designer is not necessarily a programmer, and vice versa.

Equally, Java and Javascript programming are two very different things. Please indicate which you are referring to.

Saying you will learn and get a full grasp of Java in 1 year; I'm not sure you can.
Secondly, Java is not very useful these days though it is still used for some applications.

Everybody who works in the web development should know HTML & CSS.
This will be where you start. You can learn these within 3-4 months, with daily practice.

Following that, depending on which form of web development you want to go into, you will learn other things.

Graphic design , programming and/or databases.

If you go the route of programming (my field), I would suggest you learn Javascript next.

So you start off with HTML, CSS & Javascript first 6 months and the next 6 months on to a server side programming language ( any of: PHP, PERL, RUBY, ASP , .Net, Java ). Some really smart people know a variation of these altogether.

You will not be an expert at any of these in a year. Expertise comes with experience, practice and continual use.

But that is the way you get started.

Continual use & practice is very very important. If you don't use it, you will lose it.

The very first language I learned many moons back was C; which helped me to learn Javascript, PERL & PHP eventually.

Today, I don't know much C or PERL.


PHP, Javascript, MySQL HTML CSS are my tools of trade today.

Four months ago, I was a greenhorn on freelancer seeking for a decent means of making ends meet online. After reading all the write-ups on how to write articles--documents sent to me by ladywriter--i took the bull by the horn on freelancer. First month, I no win any job, so I kon enter data entry. After completing some strenuous data entry jobs on freelancer, I made $10, an amount that I used to write my US LEVEL 1 test. Since then, I kon dey get job small small. While I encountered a number of difficulties during the turbulent yet frustrating period , you guys have always been there for me, shedding more lights on how I could overcome the rigours that were thwarting my income. So far so good, I have more than 100 reviews and my average rating na 4.9 with average dollar ratings of 5.5. I have achieved all this within 5 months, just because of the support that you guys bestowed on me. Ese gidi gan (thanku veri veri muchy). I pray say next year go better pass this year. Again, thank you ladywriter for this wonderful thread. Am out, see you guys next year.
