Re: Buhari Declares Free Higher Education by Elxandre(m): 6:28pm On Dec 22, 2015 |
If you ask me, this isn't necessary considering that education in Nigeria is quite cheap already. The funds could be used elsewhere. We still even have states complaining they can't pay minimum wages. Buhari should be careful of doing drastic things just to make an impression. 2 Likes |

This administration and APC talk like deranged people. Even in America or free-town, education is paid for. It is a fact that education is expensive 4 Likes |

coolitempa: For the first time, this's the only solid foundation that will see us diversify from an oil based economy to a technology driven economy. It will take a couple of decades to fruition, though. Science + Technology = Industry. Science + Technology + Industry = Development. For nations, real wealth comes from knowledge of and application of science (technology) to create wealth. 1 Like |

There should be free education for all Nigerians, that's not too much to ask for. As a oil producing nation, what does the common citizen has to show for it? |

Good news as courses such as education, medicine, engineering, and probably few others would now be free in tertiary institutions. My greatest regret will be empty promises. We can now be following PMB by his word and promise. Nigeria shall be great |

This is just another promise in a long line of such "awoof" promises by Nigerian politicians: they all sound fine to the uneducated ear, but have no real financial basis, and always end in disaster. This is exactly how the fuel subsidy nightmare was created by Babangida in a bid to buy favorable publicity. As some people have already pointed out, tertiary education costs money, and this government is already short of funds. How exactly will all of these new students be catered for, when nearly half of the government's income will already have to go to fuel subsidy payments, and the budget assumes an unrealistic oil price of $38 per barrel? Even if Nigeria had free cash to spend on education, it would have been better used increasing primary and junior secondary school attendance across the country to 100%, providing decent textbooks, real school buildings and proper science labs for all children, and paying for supplementary meals for the poorest ones so they are not too hungry to pay attention in class. No developed country in the world sends all of its children to university, even in places like Germany which are real leaders in science and technology. The only result of this policy will be more over-packed university lectures in run-down buildings, taught by under-paid lecturers who would rather be hustling in other ways to make ends meet than teaching, and students who will never have any contact with the science and technology they are supposedly learning, other than reading about them from second-hand textbooks. What is the point of turning out even more graduates who know almost nothing about what they studied, and can't find any jobs? 4 Likes |

Even in the advanced countries, tertiary education is not free. What is needed in Nigeria is modern scientific equipment, laboratories, competitive funding for research. Then watch and see wonders! 3 Likes |
