The first thing Icon4s said is, Alaba has all those medals because he is in Bayern. Remember how much trophy Luis Gustavo won as a Barca player. Since he left, he has been trophyless.

Celestine was at Chelsea, he had a great competition in the team, Graeme Le Saux. Graeme Le Saux was an English left back and played all games for England in France '98.

Even with that kind of competition, Celestine amassed over 200 games for Chelsea. So when you use the medals as a priority, you are using a stat that goes with a lot of variables.

Look at Ronaldo De Lima, a player who is one of the best to grace the football field. He never won the Champions League. So in club football, are you saying Muller is better than Ronaldo?

To even say Alaba is better than Okocha makes me wonder. Especially for someone who said he watched these guys play in 1996, is baffling.

I even thought maybe you are one of the youngsters who did not watch Okocha play.

Ronaldo De Lima was attacked by fans for his poor display that caused Inter to lose the Serie A title in 2002. I think they were on top the table before the last leg and R9's performance made them lose. Ronaldo cried when the coach subbed him.

Does that mean he was a bad player?

Did Luiz Gustavo win individual laurels while playing for Bayern Munich? But Alaba did.

Did Celestine Babayaro win Individual laurels while playing for Chelsea? But Alaba did.

Did Ronaldo de Lima win individual laurels more than Muller while playing for his clubs? Yes, of course.

Okocha. grin

Lucky fans in the French city of Saint-Etienne were given a treat on Monday night as Brazilian Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane took part in the 12th annual Match Against Poverty.

Footballing legends Ronaldo and Zidane were joined by a host of former greats including Clarence Seedorf, Fabian Barthez, Jay-Jay Okocha and Gianluca Zambrotta to name a few.

I am sure you know more than those who invited Zidane and Ronaldo and Okocha as Football Greats.

The thing is winning U-20 isn't success either. They need to be playing at the highest level, Brasil has been winning everything by simply sorting out the men from the boys. Out of every team they find a special player to push up.

Bros when ur child writes common etrance exams and emerge d best in Nigeria u dnt celebrate it? When he also emerge d best overall in WAEC u still dnt celebrate him. U want to wait untill he emerge as d best PHD holder in d world before you celebrate his success?

Success can recorded and celebrated at different levels and stages. If u win d U17 it is success at that level. If u win the U20 WC it is also success at that level. Only 8 countries in the world have won the FIFA world cup. So all the other member countries are failures?

For someone who claims to have watched football in the stadium in the 90's. If it is one of the young people who did not watch Okocha play, I can understand. If it is someone overseas, I can understand.

This one is baffling.

He even found Okocha's name in the list funny.

No one is saying don't celebrate waec, all i am saying is where are they now? You celebrate the success of the team but u forget the individuals. Football is a job for a select few and youth football is supposed to prepare these boys for such prospect. The light at the end of the tunnel isn't winning a world cup, it is creating world class players, players who can thrive in any league.

Where also are the Mexican players that won the U17 in 2005 alongside Dos Santos ?
Where are all d Swiss players that won the 2009 U17 alongside Ben Khalifa and Shaqiri? Where are the Mexican players that won the 2011 U17?( Dnt even know any of them).

Oga that is my exact point. All the countries u named have thriving leagues that provide employment for these boys, u might not hear from them but i can bet for the most part they are able to call football a career. We don't have a reliable league they can fall back on so we have to do even more in order for them to succeed.

Lawal To Siasia: Overhaul U-23 Team For Olympics

Ex-international, Garba Lawal, has advised national U-23 team coach, Samson Siasia, to consider overhauling his squad ahead of Rio 2016 Olympics. The former Super Eagles midfielder said although the team won the CAF U-23 Nations Cup and qualified for the games, the squad was not strong enough to compete in a tournament like the Olympics.
He congratulated Siasia for making it to the Olympics with the squad but urged the coach to effect a big change to his playing personnel if Nigeria is to go far in Brazil next year. “I am happy for the team for qualifying for the Olympics, it was not an easy thing to do and we have to salute the players and the coaching crew for getting the job done in Senegal.
I also want to agree with the coach that the team did not deserve to win the tournament; they had some luck,” Lawal, who captained Nigeria to the Athens 2000 Olympics, said. “The coach admitted his team was not strong enough and I am certain he is going to do something about it before Rio 2016.
Olympics is a different ball game, it is a different level of competition compared to the qualifying tournament, it is where some of the best players in the world showcase their talent. So, I expect the coach to overhaul his team, something big needs to be done about that squad. “We have good players across the world within that age bracket that could be useful to Siasia; he just has to work harder now.
I am not saying he should put together a team with only foreign-based players, we have quality players in the local league who can still prove themselves, but what I think he needs are players with quality to compete with the best.” Some Super Eagles players including Captain Ahmed Musa and Odion Ighalo have been touted as the overage players expected to make the team, but Lawal said the coach should carefully consider what he needs before taking decision on who fill the three slots. “Siasia is in charge, he should be the one to decide who makes the team, not me, not even the media. He knows what he needs, it is a technical issue and I believe he is going to do the right thing,” Lawal added.

Coach hails Sokari in Tunisia winning start

By Pius Ayinor
Kingsley Sokari did not score on his debut in Tunisia on Wednesday but the former Enyimba star is excited by the reviews he has received so far after the game from his coach Chibeb Ellili and teammates.

Sokari who was online to The PUNCH after the match against Hammam Lif said he was very hopeful on his future in the North African country.

He said, “Everybody was happy when my ITC finally came through and it was the coach who called me to break the news. And after the match today (Wednesday), they told me they were happy with my performance even though I know I am yet to be match fit.”

The attacker and his manager were worried about his form but his output proved otherwise.

“I haven’t played a match since Enyimba’s last league game in Lagos which is more than a month now and so I know I can only get better as the season progresses.

“The football here is fast and strong but good. By the grace of God league adaptation won’t really be an issue because I have played against North African teams in the Champions League and also the game here is not that different from what I’ve seen in the Nigerian league.”

Sokari missed an 88th minute chance as his club CS Sfaxien beat CS Hammam-Lif 2-1. After good hold up play by compatriot Junior Ajayi, Sokari was set up by his U-23 team mate, but his shot from on top of the Hammam-Lif box was tame allowing the keeper to easily gather the effort.

The Nigerian made the Sfaxien first team on arrival at their training ground last week. He then missed the Sunday Confederation Cup game against Etoile du Sahel because he had not been cleared internationally.

Osimhen: Arsenal are interested in signing me
By Raj Mahil

Nigerian starlet Victor Osimhen has confirmed that he will visit Arsenal, as the London club hold a “strong” interest in signing him, in an interview with Football Live.

The striker, born in Lagos, cannot yet sign a professional contract with any club due to his age – indeed, he will only celebrate his 17th birthday next Tuesday.

However, both Wolfsburg and Arsenal are competing for Osimhen’s signature once he turns 18.

This year, Osimhen shone during the FIFA U17 World Cup. Nigeria won the tournament, hosted in Chile, with the Arsenal target scoring 10 goals to secure the golden boot.

Though the U17 version of the prestigiuous competition has often proven to be slightly premature in terms of identifying future stars – partly due to the players still growing at that age, both physically and mentally – it seems Arsenal are already somewhat convinced by Osimhen’s potential.

He said of the interest from Europe: “I spoke with the [Wolfsburg] coach who also made several promises and if I eventually choose to sign for them, I hope they’ll keep their word.

“But I have not decided where to go yet because Arsenal are also showing strong interests and perhaps after my visit to the club, I will have a clear view of where I want to go.”

Arsenal’s current strike force are faring well at present, with Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott propelling the Gunners to within two points of Premier League leaders Leicester City.

Both forwards scored on Monday, as Arsene Wenger’s team defeated Manchester City 2-1. Giroud’s goal was his 10th in the league this term, whilst Walcott has scored three times.

The England international has been restricted to a spot out wide as of late, as Giroud has secured his status as the first-choice centre-forward in north London, thanks in no small part to his five Champions League goals this season.

Walcott’s compatriot, Danny Welbeck, should soon provide some further competition. The versatile attacker is recovering from a long-term injury sustained in April, towards the end of his debut season, in which he had a Squawka Performance Score of 529 – the best total of any Arsenal striker.

Osimhen can force his way into Eagles – Pascal

Festus Abu
Victor Osimhen can force his way into the Super Eagles first-team, says former Nigeria defender Patrick Pascal.

Osimhen, who scored 10 goals to help the Golden Eaglets win the Chile 2015 FIFA Unde-17 World Cup last month, has sparked a race for his signature among several European clubs since he declared his intention to play professional football abroad.

The 16-year-old Chile 2015 Golden Boot winner has been linked with moves to Arsenal, Real Madrid, Tottenham and German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

But Osimhen appears set to join Wolfsburg, who have reportedly assured him of first-team football when he turns 18.

The Wolves, who face Gent in the UEFA Champions League second round, had employed Ghana-Nigeria 2000 Africa Cup of Nations silver medallist Jonathan Akpoborie for two years and on-form Seattle Sounders’ Obafemi Martins for just a season.

Wolfsburg are currently seventh in the Bundesliga table.
And the Eagles’ Coordinator Pascal, who is backing Osimhen to explode in Europe, insists the Senegal 2015 Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations winner has the quality to break into the senior national team.

The 1998 Carlsberg Cup winner, who was on the alternate list when the national Under-23 team won gold at the Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games, has likened Osimhen to the late Nigeria striker Rashidi Yekini.

Pascal, who helped Shooting Stars win silver in the 1996 CAF Champions League, believes Osimhen can fill Yekini’s shoes in the Eagles if he is signed by a European club having an experienced manager to nurture his prodigious talent.

“I watched Osimhen during the World Cup and the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations and he was fantastic,” the Bauchi-born told our correspondent on the telephone on Wednesday.

“His movement and positioning was good. He plays with a lot of confidence and he is brave – like Yekini. Osimhen is a dangerous striker and I believe he can force his way into the Eagles to replace Yekini.”

The former Belgium-based player added, “Osimhen has a lot to offer. I pray he works under a manager who has a proven track record in nurturing young talents. If it doesn’t happen, it will be a problem.

“I’m happy Manuel Pellegrini has given Kelechi Iheanacho the opportunity to play first-team football at Manchester City.”

However, Pascal said the player shouldn’t be rushed into the Eagles, urging the national selectors to allow the teenager play in the youth teams for some time to enable him to develop his talent before being considered for a place in the Eagles.

He added, “We have Odion Ighalo and Ahmed Musa who are doing well. Osimhen can join them if he develops fast.”

Arsenal hand trial to Nigeria’s U-17 Golden Ball star Victor Osimhen
Written by Chris Wheatley

Victor Osimhen could be the latest young player to be swayed by Arsenal’s state-of-the-art London Colney facilitiesafter he was invited to the club for a trial.

The Nigeria Under-17 starlet made his mark at the U-17 World Cup earlier this year, scoring 10 goals in 7 games to help the Golden Eagles win the tournament, while also picking up the Golden Boot trophy himself.

Speaking to footballlive.ng, Osimhen revealed that he has already received a substantial offer from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg, but remains hopeful that Arsenal will also make an official bid shortly.

“I spoke with the [Wolfsburg] coach who also made several promises and if I eventually choose to sign for them, I hope they’ll keep their word,” he said.

“But I have not decided where to go yet because Arsenal are also showing strong interests and perhaps after my visit to the club, I will have a clear view of where I want to go.”

Chelsea ready to blow Arsenal out of water to seal Golden Boot winner deal

By Arsenal correspondent Tony Hughes

Chelsea are ready to join the battle to sign Nigeria wonderkid Victor Osimhen, Football Insider sources understand.

Arsenal are closely monitoring the Under-23 international and have made him an offer as they attempt to entice him to north London.

Osimhen has confirmed that he will visit the Gunners’ London Colney headquarters as he prepares to make a decision about his future.

But a Chelsea source has told Football Insider that the Premier League champions are also interested in the prolific striker, who shot to prominence during the U17 World Cup earlier this year.

Osimhen scored 10 goals in 7 games to help fire Nigeria to the trophy. He has subsequently been called up to the Nigeria Under-23 squad due to the high regard in which he is held by the national coaches.

It’s understood that a number of clubs around Europe are now tracking the player, with Arsenal, Wolfsburg and Tottenham all credited with an interest.

In an interview with footballlive.ng, Osimhen has revealed Wolfsburg have made him a substantial offer, but that he’s also waiting to see what Arsenal will do.

“I spoke with the [Wolfsburg] coach who also made several promises and if I eventually choose to sign for them, I hope they’ll keep their word,” Osimhen said.

“But I have not decided where to go yet because Arsenal are also showing strong interests and perhaps after my visit to the club, I will have a clear view of where I want to go.”

We Are Not Selling Players – Pinnick

Amaju Pinnick

Nigeria Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick has denied insinuations that the nation’s soccer ruling body is into the business of transferring players abroad.

The NFF boss was reacting to the Youth and Sports minister, Solomon Dalung’s charge to the NFF to tidy up players transfer with regards to up and coming Nigerian juniors.

Pinnick said the Minister’s statement and general comments with regards to the monitoring of the players were in tandem with the plans of the Nigeria Football Federation for the glory boys.

“We said it a number of weeks ago that we are developing a framework for monitoring the career progression of these players, with a view to ensuring they sign contracts that will be in their best interests and the best interest of the nation.

“The Minister did not talk about NFF selling players, because he knows very well that the NFF is not in the business of selling players.

The NFF only issues International Transfer Certificates after due agreement between the concerned Clubs, and the player in question.

The bit about NFF selling players was never part of the Honourable Minister’s comments.”

Pinnick once more urged the media to endeavour to always put issues in proper perspective, and to support the push of the NFF for greater involvement of Corporate Nigeria in football by avoiding negative headlines.

Nigeria U23 star Oghenekaro Etebo

Coach Sunday Oliseh has yet to give his approval for the invitation of U23 stars Oghenekaro Etebo and goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel to the Eagles training camp for CHAN, it has been gathered.

Etebo was top scorer at the U23 AFCON in Senegal with five goals, while Enugu Rangers goalkeeper Daniel also shone at the championship and they have subsequently been recommended for the country’s CHAN build-up on the back of their recent exploits.

However, Oliseh has yet to sanction their call-up, insisting with working the 26 players he has invited for next month’s championship in Rwanda.

“It’s only Oliseh who will decide on the two U23 stars and so far he has not done so,” a top source informed.

Even though he is still in his sick bed in Belgium, Oliseh has constantly kept in touch with the Eagles training camp, dishing out daily training schedules and other relevant instructions.

Even though he is still in his sick bed in Belgium, Oliseh has constantly kept in touch with the Eagles training camp, dishing out daily training schedules and other relevant instructions.

Oliseh will not cease to amaze me. So he did not scout the U23 team to see if he can get additions from them? Or he feels he has a perfect squad already?

What do I know? He's the Guardiola of Africa anyway

Merry Xmas sports fans

I'm not good with goodwill messages guys, so you'll have to forgive my rather dry wishes

Merry Christmas to everyone. It's been a wonderful year for us sports fans in Nigeria, from winning our first Afrobasket title in July and qualifying for the Olympics to winning a record 5th U17 title and matching Brazil's record of 2 consecutive titles as well as breaking the Asia jinx, and finally getting the U23 AFCON trophy plus Olympic qualification.

Your support has made it worthwhile and fun and I hope we have more to cheer about next year.

I don't really have one....I just follow teams Nigerians are on. That would be clubs like Manchester City, West Ham Utd, Chelsea for football and Golden State Wariors in basketball
