africaken:Hahaha Lolll Its a 5th generation aircraft. Multi role fighter, Stealth design, improved avionics, high manuevability, improved sensors, lower RCS, etc. They forget more than 30% of the parts that makes up Gripen jet are imported from US, the radar from UK and some other components from Italy. I keep wondering why they would give Sweden their best and use lower grade components for their own jets. 1 Like |

iblawi:Nope we didn't forget anything, anyway the Human machine interface of the SAAF Gripen is South Africa, so is the HMD, not to mention the AAMs. And we didn't use lower grade components, in fact SAAF fly the most advanced Gripen C/Ds of any country!! |

jln115:I guess that is why your Gripens are too complex for any of your pilots to fly. You've turned everything upside down. 1 Like |

iblawi: The problem has nothing to do with them being too complex The problem is due to funding We could stick out hawks pilots in them tomorrow and have the whole fleet airborn.... but they would not meet SAAF training and quality standards and there would be a big risk of accidents 1 Like |

Of the 2 African countries that fought in the Korean War, the SAAF's 2 Squadron's role is relatively well-known. Less well-known is Ethiopia's Kagnew (Conqueror) Battalion. Some facts: 1) 3 Kagnew Battalions served in Korea: 1st Kagnew (May 1951 - July 1952); 2nd Kagnew (July 1952 - April 1953); 3rd Kagnew (April 1953 - April 1954). Ethiopia would maintain a token presence in Korea until 1965. 2) 6037 Ethiopians served in the Korean theatre from 1951-53. At any given time the number on the front line was usually something over 1000. 3) They were involved in 238 actions… attack and defense… and won every last one. The unit never surrendered an inch of ground without direct orders from higher. 4) The three Kagnew battalions only suffered 121 of their men killed and 536 wounded; the Chinese and their North Korean puppets never captured a single one, dead or alive, a feat unique to the Ethiopians among the UN forces. 5) The Ethiopians had the best night patrol record of any force in Korea. A Kagnew patrol tactic in extreme darkness was to hold hands in column, the risk of being bunched up viewed as better than the risk of being divided - US SF were later to adopt this tactic in night patrols in the jungles of Vietnam. 6) The Chinese so feared them a rumour went round the Ethiopians were super-human and/or cannibals. They promised their troops a reward for bringing in either a live or dead Ethiopian; the reward was never collected. 7) In possibly the biggest "stunt" of the war, under full observation from enemy forces, 8 Ethiopians walked 800 yards across no-man’s land and up the slope of T-Bone Hill right into the enemy trenches. When next seen, the 8 had become 10. The patrol was dragging back 2 Chinese prisoners, having snatched them from their battalion. When the Derg overthrew the Emperor, the Kagnew home units were disbanded, some veterans arrested and murdered, with others ending up destitute and begging on the streets. 9) The South Koreans never forgot the gallant men of the Kagnew, and today fund their pensions, health-care and general welfare. 4 Likes
