A viral hemmoraghic fever.

It was first isolated by American scientists in 1969....after two American missionaries died of a strange illness.

It is spread by a certain species of rat

It was first isolated from patients in the village of Lassa in what is now Borno state...hence the name Lassa fever.

Lassa fever or Lassa hemorrhagic fever (LHF) is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus and first described in 1969 in the town of Lassa, in Borno State, Nigeria.[1] Lassa fever is a member of the Arenaviridae virus family. Similar to ebola,[2] clinical cases of the disease had been known for over a decade, but had not been connected with a viral pathogen.

Lassa frequently infects people in West Africa. It results in 300,000 to 500,000 cases annually and causes about 5,000 deaths each year.[3] Outbreaks of the disease have been observed in Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and the Central African Republic. The primary animal host of the Lassa virus is the Natal multimammate mouse (Mastomys natalensis), an animal found in most of sub-Saharan Africa.[4] The virus is probably transmitted by contact with the feces or urine of animals accessing grain stores in residences.[4] Given its high rate of incidence, Lassa fever is a major problem in affected countries.[5][6]

Lassa fever has been around in Nigeria for a long time...long before Buhari was born even. smiley(The causative organism was isolated in 1969).

And yes...we are prepared for it....as it is local to Nigeria....and we have the trained people on ground....unlike Ebola which was imported.
who sed Buhari wasnt born then, U or his Mother?

Ah glad to know that you think Buhari is immortal.....and that he was born some 15 million years ago....when the dinosaurs roamed... grin

On a more serious note, Lassa fever has been around for a while. Infact, it was first observed in Sierra Leone in the early part of the 20th century. Unfortunately, virology was in its infancy.....so no one knew what was causing the disease. It was only in 1969 that the disease was eventually identified thanks to the work of researchers at the CDC in Atlanta.

If you do not like Buhari.....why don't you go to Aso Rock and tell him so. This is a democracy. smiley

Except that it isn't.

People have been dying from Lassa fever for centuries....long before there was a Nigeria.

The problems was that back then, people did not have a name for the disease.....just like many of the other viral diseases that were flying around then. (slightly off topic....most diarrhoea in children is caused by a virus...rotavirus).Even when the whites came, they did not have names for most of the diseases flying around Africa then.

So, if someone died of a febrille illenss with lots of weakness and tiredness back in say 1909 in some remote village in Nigeria....he or she was supposed to have died of ''African fever'' (There is no such disease....it was just the medical authority 's way of saying back then....I have no idea what this person was suffering from).

As science imporved....we eventually discovered that a lot of the fevers in Africa were caused by viruses, and bacteria, and fungi, and protozoa (Malaria is a protozoan disease).

Lassa fever is a viral disease. Now...most viral diseases are self limiting....ie they enter your body, give you fever for a few days, and then get offed by your body's immune system (Good example....common cold). Lassa fever, like its cousin Ebola-Marburg and its distant relation HIV are not self limiting. They do a lot of damage to the immune system before it can react....and then other organisms...the bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses....come in and finish the job.

And they have been there for thousands, if not millions of years. And their ability to survive has a lot to do with evolution...ie they have evolved mechanisms to keep alive in a host body for as long as possible. (Rule 1 of evolution....only the fittest and the most adaptable survive...all others are on their own). And no....they were not manufactured in some lab to deal with Africans. (Because manufacturing a virus in a lab to deal with the black people involves assuming that all black people are alike immunologically speaking. We ain't. There are some people who are resistant to the HIV virus, Ebola and even Lassa for example because of genetic mutations. Evolution again!)

Fortunately for Lassa we have a cure.It is called ribavirin....and it works.Better still....it can be used in people who get infected with the Lassa virus, but have not come down with the disease. That's why I am not worried....the same way Ebola worried me.

To clarify....and sorry if I was not clear enough....the causative agent of Lassa fever was isolated in 1969.

But it has been there for a long time....the problem was that we did not have the science to identify it.

Prevention is better and cheaper than cure. To present Lassa fever, sanitation and hygiene are the keys. Ensure your house is free of rats (of whatever specie) by engaging in adequate sanitation.

Keep your food and water safe from rat droppings and urine by covering them properly. Don't eat leftovers of rats (because of poverty) this leads to a disease known as leptospirosis (another deadly rat-borne infection. When you notice dead rats around your house without killing them, take absolute care because fleas from the rats can bite and cause what is known as Plaque.

Once again, the key word here is SANITATION. Keep your surroundings clean to push rats far from you.

If you still have problems with rats, contact the nearest Environmental Health Officer in the Local government or state Ministry of Environment/Health for deratisation and Fumigation.
