This is misapplication of public fund and I doubt if those involved in the hearthless spending can be prosecuted under any criminal law. This expenditure can be excused on legal ground but on moral, a huge failure is recorded. Please let the former information commissioner of Rivers state now Ag MD of NNDC realise that she is at moment a federal government employee, we want to hear more about nndc activities. The statement read “For months, officials of the current administration in Rivers State were looking for “evidence” to justify their much-touted corruption allegation against the former Administration of Hon. Chibuike Amaechi. And last week, they finally “found” one.

“At a lavish press conference in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Commissioner of Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, called on anti-corruption agencies to investigate the expenditure of N82 million made to host Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, during his 80th birthday celebration.


“Unfortunately, and perhaps to show the sinister intent of the whole issue, to which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have also shown undue excitement, references were made to Prof. Soyinka as a “friend of Amaechi”, without putting in context what necessitated the honour for the Nobel Laureate by the then Rivers State Government.
“While the whole claim is nothing but bare-faced lies deliberately hatched to smear the literary scholar as well as the Acting Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, it is a shame that officials of government would indulge in this kind of gimmicky just to settle petty scores. Why not publish the entire documents to see if there are no invoices and receipts coverings the expenditures.

As i said the amount is outrageous, but then that is standard expenses as it relate to Nigerian Governments. Cost of all government's (states and Federal) expenditures are usually 3 to 10 times the actual cost. This is a systemic problem and not restricted to the Amaechi government. As long as expeditures are covered by invoices and receipts, there is nothing anybody can do but blow hot air.

Yes o. That is the Nigerian Constitution. The state are not obliged to give account of their expenditure to anybody, not even the federal government. As long as the expenditure is bugdeted for by the state assembly, there is nothing anybody can do.

Of course the federal Government is at liberty to spend its own money according to budget approved by the National Assembly. The Federal Government is at liberty to recover it's money that it feels was stolen. The Federal Government under Buhari is trying to recover Federal money that was distributed for personal purposes.

If the Rivers State government feels its money had been stolen also, it behoves on Wike to start legal proceedings against those it has evidence on. He can start with the state high court and if it does not get an acceptable verdict, it can move all the way to the supreme court.

Gbam. The State Assembly should have questioned this expenditure and other expenditures of Amaechi, but as you have pointed out, in Nigerian home grown version of democracy, the legislature is just a rubber stamp for the executive. This is the situation in all the 36 state in Nigeria. It is even worse at the federal level. How else would you explain all the lootings and extra budgetary expenditure of the Jonathan's administration without as much as a whisper from the National assembly.

As it is today, if a tyrant and despot gets to be president in Nigeria, we are doomed, there is nothing the National Assembly can do.
