The Reds have an encouraging record on Tyneside, however, having recorded three consecutive wins without conceding a goal. Newcastle are also struggling for form and have lost their last four games 1-0. Steve McClaren’s side may draw some encouragement from their last outing against United, the 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in August.

Latest team news: Bastian Schweinsteiger is sidelined after suffering a knee injury against the Blades, and van Gaal will assess the rest of his squad ahead of a second game in four days. Phil Jones missed Saturday's game though injury, though Jesse Lingard made his comeback from the bench and is surely in contention to feature again on Tuesday. Adnan Januzaj will no longer play for the Under-21s on Monday night after the Reds reconsidered his situation, while Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia are still long-term absentees. Newcastle are without Jack Colback, Vernon Anita, Papiss Cisse, Mike Williamson, Massadio Haidara, Rolando Aarons, Tim Krul, Gabriel Obertan, Steven Taylor, Emmanuel Riviere and Curtis Good.

Danger man: Georginio Wijnaldum was signed from PSV Eindhoven in the summer and is currently Newcastle’s top scorer with seven goals from 22 appearances, with four of those strikes notched during a 6-2 battering of Norwich City in October. The Netherlands international is a former team-mate of Memphis Depay at the Phillips Stadion.
