Why Is Gen. Murtala Mohammed On Our Naira And Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi Isn't? by id911(m): 3:17pm On Jan 18, 2016 |
Gen. J.T.U. Aguiyi-Ironsi was the first Nigerian Military Head of State and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. This was made possible because there was some perceived sabotage in some sections of the country which made the first coup d'etat largely unsuccessful. The Military had no choice other than to appoint its highest ranking officer, which was Gen. Ironsi at the time, to lead the government. There's no known record he was involved in the coup; I might be wrong though. Six months later, Gen. Muhammed was actively involved in the counter bloody coup which brought Gen. Gowon to power. He was also a major protagonist in the coup that brought himself, Gen. M. Muhammed, to power in 1975. I personally consider Gen. M. Muhammed the best Nigerian Head of State ever because during the short periods he held sway, he introduced a lot of reforms, cleansed the system and set the stage and timeline for a return to democracy in 1979. Although the two of them were killed in almost similar circumstances, what normally baffles is: why is he then adorning the twenty naira note and Ironsi not on any Nigerian currency? |

It is a sacrilege that a blood thirsty killer like Murtala Mohammed has a place of honour on the 20 Naira note. How is it that a genocidal killer like Murtala Mohammed can have airports and major roads named after him? This is beyond me! Murtala led a counter coup that slaughtered over 300 eastern officers in 1966. In 1967, troops under Murtala Mohammed massacred over 1000 innocent civilians in Asaba. Murtala led thousands of Nigerian soldiers to their deaths in a suicidal mission to cross the river Niger into Onitsha even though he was warned not to do this as Biafran Soldiers were on the other side. Murtala was the first Military officer to conduct a coup in Nigeria purely to sieze political power. Thousands of people died for the sake of Murtala Mohammed. Yet, that Military criminal is on the 20 Naira note! Tufiakwa! Only in Nigeria 1 Like |

In the early hours of January 15th, Kaduna Nzeogwu disgruntled over a list of items with the ruling political class and with disdain for certain regionalists, led an army of fellow Igbo Majors and a Yoruba, Ademoyega Adewale, in a military coup against the political leadership of Nigeria. He and his team of Igbo comrades murdered Nigeria’s top brass Hausas in that Coup. Prime minister, Tafawa Balewa, a federal minister and two top regional premiers were among those murdered. Kaduna Nzeogwu’s Igbo squad killed the premier of the Northern and Western regions but of course left the Igbo Eastern premiere alive. He killed the Finance minister (Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh), who was Nigeria’s #3 man, but left the number #2 man. Azikiwe was left alive. ***Now, Pay Attention, This Is Where We're Going*** The Igbo top commander and now first military president of Nigeria, General Aguiyi Ironsi, in a very careless and thoughtless move, aimed at suppressing the Nzeogwu ethnic coup sentiment and distrust, in his brief six months of reign, dissolved the regions. So we ask the question - why did Aguiyi Ironsi dissolve the regions and create a Unitary republic? It was in May, during Aguiyi Ironsi’s reign that the first of what is known today as anti-Igbo riots occured. According to the story, an Igbo bakery made a loaf of bread, depicting Nzeogwu as the Saint in the ‘Saint George and the Dragon’ medieval crusader story, from the 7-11th century. ***See the 1st Attached Picture*** This depiction was highly provocative to a welcoming Hausa-Fulani, still licking their wounds and being hospitable, after an unprovoked Igbo led military coup and assassination of their finest. This also while Nigeria was bleeding from being thrown into its first military government era. The military went on to rule the nation for 13 straight years. As I was saying, the loaf of bread had Nzeogwu as Saint George, standing over and killing Sardauna, who was depicted as the bleeding dragon. ***See the 2nd Attached Picture*** This triggered the first inter-ethnic crises in the North. Igbos fled to the East, and returned only later under guarantee of their safety by president Ironsi. Some say mischievous secessionist Igbos orchestrated the pogroms to get their people home. Later that year, in July, General Murtala Muhammed, taking advantage of the precedent, led a very bloody, 4-day coup and overthrew the Ironsi Government. At this stage, Igbos in the north were highly targeted in outbreaks of ethnic violence. Thousands were reportedly killed, though the numbers can not be verified. And this was the episode of the Igbo exodus to the South. ***Now, In answering your question, General Aguiyi Ironsi couldn't have been honoured with any of our currency due to the following 2 reasons: 1.) He was a power hungry & tribalistic bigot who effectively at Gun point, forced the remaining members of Balewa's Government to resign, he then made the Senate president Nwafor Orizu, another Igbo who was serving as acting president in Azikiwe's absence, to officially surrender power to him, staging a coup of his own and ending the First Nigerian Republic. 2.) His failure to punish the coup plotters and the promulgation of the now infamous "Decree No. 34"—which abrogated the country's federal structure in exchange for a unitary one— crystallized this conspiracy theory. I hope I have been able to answer your question satisfactorily? - Nagode! 8 Likes 3 Shares

Akathriel: Thanks for your contribution Sir! I read through your comments and you made some vital points but couldn't really get convinced. Two former Heads of State who died in a bloody coup against them, one on national currency and other things that immortalised him but the other without anything whatsoever |

id911: Murtala Muhammed is one of the human frauds gifted to Nigeria. If not for his maternal uncle, the dumbass would not have been officer in Nigerian army. I do not care about those miscreants who embezzled money but those who stepped to the corridor of power through corruptible endeavors. |

General Muhammed is on the Naira note because of the things he did as Head of State for less than two years, Aguiyi IronsI is NOT on the Naira note for the necessary things he did NOT do as military leader and Head of State. Go figure. |

I can see E-war on Nairaland and gona start here. Truly JTU Ironsi does not deserve a place in the history of Nigeria based on his failure to act when necessary. The igbo guys were making mockery of Sarduana of Sokoto after the assassination and this act provoked the Northerners to be killing the Igbos in the North. The rest is history and they are at it again et al hatred against the Yorubas and other ethnic nationalities. |
