I will like this to go viral so as to get the attention of the President, the Minister of Labour and the inept leaders of the Nigerians Labour Congress. Kindly move to front page.
It is with a heavy heart and rile arising from my disappointment in a failed union called NIGERIAN LABOUR CONGRESS (NLC), I write this piece.
Summarily, it is my opinion that the activities and functions of our trade union is but not limited to these highlighted points briefly itemized below (culled from the NLC website);
1. Political role, using collective power to influence decisions on behalf of members and the wider society;
2. Market role, by intervention wage bargaining and thus impacting on the economy;
3. Regulatory role by setting standards in relation to jobs and terms and conditions;
4. Democratizing role, in creating industrial democracy at the workplace;
5. Service role, in promoting the intervention of members;
6. Enhancement role in helping to develop the human potential of members; and
7. Welfare role in providing assistance to particular groups.

This well written and articulated roles expressed above by the NLC is only but a mirage to the Nigerian worker as majority are yet to see this in action due largely to the gross neglect of duties and corruption prevalent in the union
I deduced the primary responsibility of the Union should be there to protect the rights and interest of the Nigerian worker but this is hardly the case. The Nigerian worker is exposed to all forms of exploitation and injustice.
The Labour union has simply failed in its duties.
This has placed the Nigerian worker in a state of hopelessness and perpetual agitation and this is a ticking time bomb and a revolution is imminent if something is not done to ameliorate this.
I know of a particular instance where the NLC was invited to mediate some dispute between Nigerian workers and their Indian employers in one of these Indian owned establishment (MSTORE INVESTMENT LIMITED No 54, Adeniyi Jones, Beside Zenith bank, Ikeja, Lagos). The company operates in different names so as to evade tax and basic responsibilities. After series of correspondence and calls, when the NLC eventually came, they met with the management, collected huge sums of money as bribes and left without any recourse to the Nigerian workers who invited them initially. This begs the question, is it Nigeria that is a failed state or the people in power disrupting the peace and unity of the Nation. It is often said, that Nigerians are the problems of other Nigerians.
The rate by which these so- called Indian, Chinese and Lebanese owned companies in the Nation keep on exploiting and using Nigerian workers in a distraught and dehumanizing manner can be said to be another form of slavery. The seemingly quietness and neglect by the Nigerian government and workers union is a great cause for concern for all. Coupled with the low level of unemployment and underemployment in the nation that has given these Firms the leeway to exploit and treat Nigerians workers and graduates like poo.
Going through different write-ups and articles on the treatment of Nigerians by these Indians and so called Lebanese (a typical example LACASERA) you will notice, they see themselves as better humans, bringing in their racist and discriminating orientation into the Nigerian work space.
This should stop before a revolution will take place and Nigerians will stand and fight for what is theirs.
I happened to have worked in one of these Indian owned company with a staff strength of over 2200 people of which over one-third of the workers are unqualified Indian ‘expatriates’ imported into the country to do jobs, Nigerians ordinarily should handle. What is baffling is that, most of these Indians in the company come into the country without requisite work permit and proper documentation, thereby violating the Constitution, yet they are mainly placed above the so called BSc/MSc graduates with adequate qualifications and work experience. Fine, there is no problem with that since it’s an Indian company the management has the right to employ and appoint people who they deem fit into positions in the company but this should not be at the detriment of Nigerian workers. The rights of workers in these so called Indian company is often being violated and trampled upon on a daily basis. Most of these injustices is in the form of; poor remuneration- graduates earning less than 50k, no leave allowance, no pension scheme, very limited health cover when available, casualization of workers, absence of job security, no increment, arbitrary sacking with no compensation whatsoever, irregular salary expatriates are paid Local and then foreign salary , no promotions, no profit sharing, maltreatment of staff and total disdain and disregard for the Nigerian Labour Law which they continually contravene again and again other unwholesome practices includes cutting of cost, tax avoidance and evasion, declaring false financial position and statements.
Nigeria failed? Or the so called NLC that is supposed to protect and help in the wellness of the conditions of workers in the country.
I want to implore the new Minister of Labour, Sen Chris Ngige, to kindly look into this, as a matter of urgency, meet with the various workers union (which have so far failed in their responsibilities) and set up a fact finding committee that will make recommendations that will (probably lead to legislations) adequately address these issues.
For the sake of the sanity of many Nigerian youth. Something must be done NOW. We cannot continue to remain slaves in our father’s land.

They cant try all these rubbish in their country but would want to take advantage of the unemployment and bad leadership in Nigeria to maltreat and subject Nigerians to modern slavery, while paying them peanuts and meagre salary.

The NLC needs to wake up. A lot has been going wrong in this geographical expression for a long time. Imagine a governor unilaterally sacking tens of thousands of workers and this partisan NLC stood and did nothing. Buhari the super clueless has really set us back to the 20th century.

I think that the average Nigerian worker has no understanding of labor laws and how to treat the fück up of employers that openly violate it.

We have the Internet, we have mobile phones for documenting evidence, we have the hunger. Let's make these suckers pay.

Lawyers in the house, collective litigation fit work?

who or rather what is NLC and co.....its so sad that all they care about is their selfish interest,power struggle.....which money to share,chasing after shadows and how to mingle with the politicians.Yet millions of workers are insulted,Maltreated and even dealt unjustly.The common Nigeria worker have no one to talk to,on one to lay his grievance to and no help.Companies have capitalized on the weakness or rather non -existence of these bodies to act as they wish.It is only in Nigeria that citizens are treated as slaves by foreigner.It is only in Nigeria that we have no functioning law and implementation.No wonder all these 3-world countries flood to Nigeria....after all nothing works here.They go Scot free with any action they display.

I pity the masses,cheap labor and slavery is what we practice.When you speak out you are termed an enemy,when you resign you are called a coward and when you choose to swallow it all,you are called a fool.

AHHHH when will this country wake up from its eternal slumber.......

For a very long time, government has failed us and we in turn, fail each other.thank God for people like the OP who in their own little way are trying their best to ensure this is corrected which is what everybody should do until this is corrected.

Do they (NLC) have a facebook, whatsapp etc account so we can register our protest? I so HATE them right from the NUBIFE n their employee saga.
They only thing the OLD IDOITS know how to do is to wait when pump prices of fuel is up n shout, never in the history have we heard or seen the NLC championing the crusade of an ordinary citizen. Even the last election they conducted was terrible, corruption is rife among the EXCO. Remember the mortgage saga, plz let either attack the on social media or any other online platform because they are another set of OLD CRIMINALS

The problems are mulfactorial.....
But it buoys down to the quality of foreign investment we can attract..........
No western country will invest in a complex n corrupt country like Nigeria.
Companies with western roots treats workers better since they have fair labour laws
I guess the Asians n indians understand our system better since it's no different from theirs' and they equally treat their own people like thrash.

Firstly, the solution is to come up with a plan that makes the expat realize that if they succeed in working in Nigeria, then they should cherish it and count themselves very lucky.
How?
The ministry of interior, should make sure all aliens are made to register and collect residence permit renewable every 2-3 years.
These expat must be made to process the documentation themselves.
No PR or company representative must be used.
They have to generate the residence application form from franchised Nigeria residence centers.

These centers are licensed with the requisite expertise to type, translate authenticate all document from respective consular and embassies here in Nigeria.
All technical jobs must carry the addition burden of certification by the respective regulating councils or bodies like COREN, NSE, ICAN, Management, NUJ and a whole lot of others before they are allowed to work.
Plus a compulsory statutory appearance and fee payable yearly.

After these, those who must work in critical industries like our space agencies, Oil and gas infrastructure including Crude Oil terminals, Power and Utilities, Mines and Steel, Water and Construction/Infrastructure must be made to obtain a Critical Infrastructure and industry Permit, renewable yearly
By payment of security checks fee to the police and application and process fee from the Ministry of Interiors. Who will do the necessary checks with DSS, Nigeria Military Intelligence and Immigration.

These must be applied 3 month before expiration and these must be completed and dispatched to the work location of a Critical Infrastructure Offices situated in all of these industries listed above.

If your security permit is not renewed, no expat is allowed to work and will be required to exit the country after a period not longer than 30days.
They must submit the ID card/permit or pass at a security post manned by forces from the Interior Ministry.

No expat should be paid in foreign currency, the Naira equivalent must be paid to their Nigeria Bank first, they can repatriate the fund by swift transfer in any currency of their choice.

Nigeria stands to gain the following for doing these:
1. Proper documentation of aliens in Nigeria.
2. Generate revenue for residency permit
3. Generate revenue for work permits
4. Generate jobs for Nigerians working in the residence centers as well as typing centers.
5. Generate money from the CI permit
6. Regulating professional bodies for technical jobs can control Expat Quota allocation as well as improve our industry standards as we will be forced to standardize our test and qualification exams
7. Generate revenue for the professional bodies.
8. Raise revenue for interiors ministry, Immigration and police for background checks.
9. If any of the expat misbehaves, simply complaining at the CI check post means he is out of the country as his pass or ID will be ceased hence they become more respectful.
10. makes it difficult to export Nigeria jobs as they the expats will be required to pass qualifying exams regulated in Nigeria irrespective of the country of origin.
11.Eliminate shady treatment of Nigerians by Chinese, Lebanese, Indians or any foreign owner for that matter by empowering the professional bodies to cease qualifying license of the business/expat, hence he is out of work or business.
12. Increased currency strength as the Naira will appreciate against other currencies being used as the preferred means of payment.

To make more interesting, is to ensure all expat on rotation or long cycles must either be housed overnight in the company accommodation or lodged in a Nigerian Hotel on departure and resumption with far advantage given to a would be Nigerian airways in flight booking.

The country will stand to gain housing infrastructure being built to international standards plus the spin off for the construction/ real estate industry.
This will make them at least make purchases from the country market or online stores, patronize our hotels thereby improving services and generating revenue and commerce.

We talk about foreign companies and all when all Nigerian companies are owing workers left right and center.

Capital oil and Gas owned by Ifeanyi Ubah is owing more than 4 months salary to his workers yet Nupeng and NLC remain quiet on the issue.

We are killing ourselves by ourselves. If we treat ourselves right, will a foreigner come and treat us wrongly when he's not mad.

collective Litigation, would have been a reasonable response but in Nigeria we hardly have Pro bono cases. our judicial system is a mess
