wristbangle: People like you have this bigmanity mentality. As a hospital volunteer years back, we had to wheel out bodies from the morgue to the chapel of rest for families to view. A bit later, it helped me in pathology & anatomy sessions. While some students were feeling queasy, I just got on with it relaxed. Fortunately, Westerners don't look down on you based on your job. A cleaner I know used proceeds from it to set up businesses back in Lagos. Employing graduates now. Some collecting N40k Naira monthly. Hardworking cleaners, Security guards, carers and cabbies can earn up to £30k (some even more) a year. That is same as a medical House Officer just starting job. After 5 to 6 years at university. Consider also that around 10% of medical students over last 10 years already had a PhD, around 23% an MSc/MA nearly 40% with a BSc/BA before going to medical school. Many foreigners also pay their way through BSc to PhD doing so-called menial job. Many are now lecturers/HOD in 9ja. Some doing menial jobs & studying soon find that after finishing, with MSc job offers are £25k/year. His menial job already gives him £31K/year. If he's a bit mature and has kids, current job allows him to do school run and wife can work steady. Total family income = £59k/year. Should he take £25k job with MSc, then ask the wife to stay at home? Lose £34k/year? And hope some day his career will progress and earn more? You cannot use 9ja mentality to judge what happens abroad. Many permutations make people do what they do. You have to be in the position first to know. Above all, there's dignity in labour. 15 Likes 3 Shares |

These are honorable jobs people do. I don't see any issue in this . If you have been abroad, you would see many students do this part -time. I did same. I worked in a restaurant making chicken burgers when I was in graduate school in the US. today, I work in one of the BIG 4 firms in the US. its about perception and what you want in life . I see nothing wrong with these 9 Likes |

wristbangle: More Nigerians at "Home in Nigeria" do more of the Drug Smuggling as it fetches more money outside Nigerian shores. On that you are wrong! Prostitution is banned in most Western Countries and is not openly done, as we see it done in Nigeria. Infact, there are more Nigerian prostitutes in Nigeria, than abroad. only a few make it out of the country to continue the trade and even at that, anyone knows that you cant find men "OPENLY patronising" under-age prostitutes abroad, as we have in Nigeria, so, its even worse here in Nigeria. ...and by the way, the Poster is likely to be one of those people who cant survive in Nigeria without killing their family-member abroad, asking for Money. They suffer to make money but parasites like you will lie to them about how you are "nearky dying of some fake sickness unless they send money to you quickly"....... yet you will waste the money on flexing with girls and then turn around to insult their sensibilities! God is watching you. 6 Likes |

There is dignity in labour. Jobs such a these are what immigrants typically start off with. Those with the right skill set will move on to bigger and better things in no time....and those that blocked to pass most of their courses and don't have the soft skills and adaptability required to cut it end up as career cleaners, security guards etc Na so oo |

The timeless saying that "no one can ever see beyond his horizon" aptly applies to the OP. This is the most FOOLISH posting I have ever seen on NL which made frontpage. Apart from drug peddling, the jobs listed, including PROSTITUTION are perfectly legitimate, particularly under the UK law. I was lucky to be fully funded to study for my masters and doctoral degrees in london and didn't need to work. Nonetheless, there were boys and girls, men and women who had to pay their passage through graduate school by doing some of the jobs listed by the OP, especially cleaning and security. These ladies and gentlemen successfully completed graduate studies and now occupy enviable positions in their respective fields both at home and abroad (especially Europe, and north America). The reality of today's market is that countless native Europeans, Americans, Australasians who are university graduates are not in graduate positions in their respective countries, making it more difficult for immigrants to break through into the labour markets in these countries. Even when you finally break through, the whites would make life uncomfortable for you, especially if you're smarter, cleverer and more qualified than they are - they feel threatened by your profile and portfolio. That said, I personally know a Nigerian who graduated from OAU with first class honours in biochemistry, completed his MSc in the same field at NewCastle University, and for whatever reason, has been working in customer service for the last 10 years. He has built a country home in Naija, has his own detached house in the UK, lives comfortably, peaceably and together with his wife and children hold UK citizenship. What else can anyone ask for? He is, today, the envy of his classmates who are in Nigeria wallowing in university lecture rooms as senior lecturers and in laboratories 'slaving' as chemists for MNCs. I normally don't do argumentum ad hominem, but on this occasion, I would say the OP needs his brains checked at ARO, Abeokuta, because he must be certainly, mentally derailed. 14 Likes 5 Shares |

Griffon: He's being rational and truthful. Nigeria doesn't have the suitable climate to work and most of their work place doesn't even meet the required health and safety standards as obtainable abroad. One can injure themselves during work without any first aid or available ambulance service to rush to their rescue. Nothing works in our country, people are just surviving in thorny conditions. A friend once told me sometime last year, that he's better off than most affluent Nigerians who are 10times richer than he is. This is someone who works as a health and safety contractor and earns about £45K annually (an equivalent of 17million naira). He cited his reasons as no matter how rich a Nigerian is they don't have stable electricity, pipe borne water, roads, proper healthcare etc. That their generators and boreholes could experience fault often which could lead to a brief interruption of power and water supply. Sounds crazy but very truthful. 8 Likes 2 Shares |

wristbangle: The working in the mortuary things is false. You can't just leave Nigeria and become a mortician abroad. It's like traveling abroad to become a medical doctor. You're dreaming, unless you go through training abroad and get the highly required qualifications. And that class of job that mortician falls in needs special training. It's not the type that picks just anybody like other minor roles. And if you've not travelled, these things people say are usually very hard to relate to. As a student what job do you expect before graduating to get that much desired job? Sure you'll get that much desired job cos you're equipped with a certificate and training from an institution they know and trust. But meanwhile would you tell a Nigerian graduate to reject a cleaning job that pays his bills and leaves him/her with a monthly cheque of N600,000 equivalent? Hmmmmmm. |

The Op is not exposed at all, not even to Nigeria. You need to find out what jobs some graduates have to settle for in Lagos and Abuja. During university lecturers strike there was the picture of one lecturer going round in the social media while carrying pounpon as a laborer. That is extreme though. We do have many graduates, at least on a temporary basis doing the same jobs in Nigeria as US. This also happened to Ghanians in the eighties here in Nigeria. Nigerians graduates has since taken over right here in your Nigeria. One of the big environmental company in Lagos today started as two man crew, foreign graduates. Until they were able to hire more and get more contracts. They know the in and out of the job. It is also important if you are starting a business to be able to do the lowest to the top job in case someone call in sick or suddenly quit. I have a friend, whenever he is short of workers, his family is on the farm. This OP sounds very short sighted. That is the problem we have in Nigeria where most graduates refuse to do menial jobs but are willing to do it for their bosses. As for prostitutes and drug dealers, which university did the OP go? Pay attention and you will see them around you every weekend taken by bus loads to parties or some of the the drug dealers and users as cult members. OP shine your eyes. 1 Like |
