Mayflowa: yeah, i also had that "surprised" look when i got here too. just ask questions, look for group to join in class it helps with assignments , and maybe you take a prerequiste for that class(which might be an UG clas) even though it wont count to your GPA, it would help you understand the present class you are in. i dey university of Missouri at Rolla, we dey look up to una wey dey columbia like bigger bros |

MrMann1: Don't get it wrong. I don't think there is any free health insurance plan in NY. It's either you're on any kind of government assisted program such medicare/medicaid or you/your spouse is an 1199 member. Ask her how she got her free plan first before you conclude. |

khulthum: your chances of getting In for summer might actually be ZERO. Email the graduate director and know if they have space before wasting your time n cash n hope. |
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 8 by AgreatMan: 12:47am On Jan 23, 2016 |
sureb0y: From my little experience, applying for spring or summer might be a waste. You don't want to apply to a school where they have 1 slot for spring and you wouldn't even know cos the schools will claim they offer admission three times a yr which might be technically wrong. It's good to ask questions especially their graduate department. The gre thing depends on you, I prepared in less than 5 weeks with no materials or lessons and ended up with 300 which is not good enough. I didn't read shit for toefl, not after all those Hollywood I watch. You call though. Good luck! |

happney65: Did u read the convo at all? No one is disputing who spends more money between British and American. Generally, we are saying $200 is a big money anywhere to buy a single textbook. However, I only commended UK schools for having lecture notes and a better structured library where you can easily loan books on any field. @least am comparing cranfield uni, UK & uni of Missouri, US. 2 Likes |

imperiouxx: U know I always love your contribution here. I don't feel this my school at all (uni of Missouri). The weather is extremely cold or hot. Am planning on transfer to Houston uni this fall. Do you think it's a good idea? Have you been to the two places before. There seems to be lot of student jobs here anyway. |

Meg17: I believe before Passport office click submit to issue your passport are you not ask to check if your names were spell correctly or not Lemme assume you didn't look very well and it was later you discovered the error Using affidavit might work and might not work 50/50 but who knows if the VO won't see the error during your interview |

Mayflowa: What you are experiencing is perfectly normal for anyone adjusting to the US educational system. Just give yourself more time and you will adapt. Same thing happened to me when I first arrived. During the first week of class I was completely lost. I could barely hear what was taught in class because most instructors speak very fast. In my first test I failed woefully but I was able to bounced back and make a nice GPA at the end of the semester because my lowest test score was replaced by my final exam Listed below are some of the things I did that helped me. (A) Read your syllabus and make sure you always prepare for a topic before it's taught in class. For example Let say your instructor will be teaching integration next week. Before class next week read up on integration. Just google integration and you will see some various links with detailed explanation on the topic. Another thing you can do is to watch youtube videos on whatever topic you are preparing for. Most youtube videos normally show step by step solution of any given problem. (B) Do all homework, extra credit and quizzes In my school your homework, extra credit, quizzes and test make up the bulk of your grade. You can actually pass a class without even writing the final exam The breakdown might look like this Homework: 10% Quizzes: 10% Tests: 60% Final Exam: 20% Extracredit: 10%-20% {depends on the instructor} Unlike Nigeria here in the states you can project your anticipated grade for a given class even before the final exam. Most times depending on your instructor, if you are comfortable with your grade you can choose exempt from final exam and you will not be required to write the final exam. (C) Attend tutor sessions In most college campuses tutors are usually available free of charge to all current college student. So if you are confused with a given topic you can schedule an appointment with a tutor and they can assist you. They can also proofread your essays and in some cases they can also assist with your homework. (D) Know your professor Normally before taking any classes I go to ratemyprofessors.com to view students comments concerning instructors pattern of teaching. Most times I tend to go with professors with highest ratings because it is so easy to pass their class. Some instructors offer take home tests and others offer open notebook/open textbook test. You need to ask people around you so they can let you know which instructors might be easy. Remember in this country information is key to success. (E) If possible avoid withdrawing from a class midway through the semester. Most students tend to withdraw from a class after the First test if they have performed poorly. I always advice people to complete a course regardless of any difficulty faced. In my school depending on the performance of the entire class most instructors usually curve students towards the end of the semester. For example let say I am taking a differential equation course and there are no A students, normally at the end of the semester inorder to help some student pass the course a B student is assigned an A, a C student is assigned a B, a D student is assigned a C. Remember all of these is dependent on the instructor. I remember taking an integral calculus class in my third semester. This class was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. Average test score in any given test are normally 30/100 and sometimes 40/100 After the second test most students withdrew from the class. Out of over 30 students registered for the course there were only 10 students left in the course. After the third test my cumulative grade was about 60% which is a D. A week before our final exam the instructor announced that our final exam was open notebook/open textbook meaning that everybody was allowed to bring any kind of Mathematics textbook including printed materials from the internet into the exam hall. I couldn’t believe my ears. I brought in about three different Math textbooks and also printed a lot of papers from the internet. When our final grades for the semester were released I skyrocketed from a D grade to a B as a result of the open notebook/open textbook policy. 20 Likes 4 Shares |

Mayflowa:Most science classes require textbooks that cost about $200-$300 per textbook including access code. When I took my first physics class I remember buying my textbook about $300 from amazon. if your class require an access code inorder to submit your homework and quizzes you can buy an access code online and with your access code you will have access to an e- textbook free of charge which you can print. However if you prefer a hardcopy of your textbook what you can do is to rent used textbooks from sites like amazon.com, chegg.com, barnesandnoble.com, bookrenter.com & campusbookrentals.com. You will need the ISBN number of the textbook you which to rent. 5 Likes |
