Dateline April 1, 2015, citizens were glued to their TV sets earnestly following events from INEC Collation Centre in Abuja where election results for the 2015 Presidential Election were been reeled out. Expectations were high, many were engulfed with palpable fear of the unknown. Prior to the elections, various prophesies were made both in favour of the incumbent and his main challenger, Mohammadu Buhari. The world had been fed with the notion of likelihood of Nigeria's unity going to shreds. It got to a fiery level where non-indigenes had to flee their primary places of residence for fear of reprisal attacks from the camp of the eventual winner. Suddenly, news filtered in that the sitting president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan had done the unthinkable by making a frantic concession phone call to Buhari even while the last result was yet to be announced! The media was awash with stories of frustrations expressed from Jonathan's camp, many of whom were not happy with the ex President's decision. That historic phone call from all indications, is now seemingly becoming Jonathan's albatross. Not only is his govt been ridiculed by his successor, there's a feeler Jonathan may go down as the first Nigerian president to be docked. Ironically, Buhari who's now Jonathan's nightmare had contested elections at three different times all ending in defeats. His major stumbling block to the seat of Presidency on those occasions was Olusegun Obasanjo who did everything legal or otherwise to thwart his ambition. In Obasanjo's reckoning, allowing Buhari to take over power from him directly or from any of his godsons would be nothing but suicidal. In other words, Obasanjo had seen what Jonathan couldn't. With apparent bullying of Jonathan's associates in the last three months, no one needs a clairvoyant to determine his regretful state somewhere in Otuoke, Bayelsa State. Maybe he should have jettisoned all sentiments about national unity and peace by hanging on to power. Maybe he should have damned all consequences by giving Buhari the Obasanjo's treatments in the 2003, 2007 and the 2011 elections. Maybe, maybe and maybe. These were the arguable thoughts running through Jonathan's mind in probably one of the most trying times of his existence as a mortal. In all honesty, nobody can vouch for the last administration in terms of sincerity in handling the nation's treasury but the manner it has been singled out as the most corrupt govt of all times and labelled as the sole architect of our misfortune calls for worry. Corruption had been a bane in Nigeria's quest for attaining a first-world status but using Jonathan's adminstration as the sacrificial lamb negates all logics. An all-encompassing probe and prosecution should have been extended to his predecessors. In view of the above, can we reasonably conclude that Jonathan made one of the costliest mistakes of his life by calling Buhari and conceding defeat? Wouldn't it have been appropriate to go all hog in saving his head and those of his party associates by permanently retiring Buhari with the 2015 elections? Funny guy the OP plus the two below me. How is it a mistake when he lost and conceded defeat?and as obtainable in any civilized setting,the loser always call to congratulate the winner. What did you expect him to do?fight his glaring defeat in Court? You seem to forget this is a democratic setting,and all Powers does not lay with the President alone. A democratic setting brought in Jonathan,and a democratic setting kicked him out too. If he had performed well,his score card would have brought him him. So,what exactly are you complaining about now? Complaints against Buhari That he is fighting corruption? That the Military is winning the Boko Haram War? That our Monies that was being shared by PDP with the likes of Dokpesi that was stopped is bad? That the single TSA is not working? That we don't hear of frivolous contracts being awarded? I beg to differ. Of what good will it benefit you and I if Jonathan had manipulated the elections or refused to concede a glaring defeat? Are we disappointed at the gale and compendium of monumental corruption being exposed under his administration? How do we explain the confirmation by most of the key suspects identified so far to receiving untoward illegal sums? One even shamefully declared he was sent on errand by Jonathan with N400m. What I think Jonathan will be saying to himself will be to turn back the hands of time, to enable him make amends. I strongly think he feels screwed by his inglorious time at the Presidency. OLADD: For the sake of Nigeria, let us commend GEJ for being a good democrat who placed the interest of his country and One Nigeria far above sentiment and selfish interest. Assuming Bubu missed again as usual, Nigeria would have become Somalia by now.  Posterity will surely judge everyone for his deeds both in this world and in the world to come. Firefire: The blame clearly is on the clueless one that could not protect the lives of those youth corpers. Thank God boko haram did not overrun the country within his looting 5 plus. years. realborn: The monumental fraud had been there from the birth of Nigeria as a nation. Even Buhari's regime of 1984/85 was not exempted from the rot. This govt should have preoccupied itself with promulgating policies that ensure accountability and zero tolerance for corruption going forward. OLADD: I think fighting corruption is a method of promulgating policies against graft. Our economy is struggling today because past administrations recklessly plundered our wealth. I am so so sure that Nigeria has lost over $100b to leadership induced theft in the past. If we had this in our kitty, will we be struggling with sustaining obligations for for our forex? Will we be struggling with infrastructure deficits? I am very worried at the approach undertaken by the new administration to tackle the effect of our dwindling revenue from crude oil, our main export commodity. I also think there are several things wrong with the presented Budget. However, it is imperative to expose and punish those who have stolen from us. Pidggin: African leaders do not relinquish power easily because they are overtly corrupt. Thus, if an ex African President relinquishes power or concedes defeat, and afterwards gets mentioned in tales of corruption (innocent until proven guilty), should we close our eyes and act like nothing happened? realborn: Punishing graft offenders is not exclusive to Nigeria but selecting and limiting it to just one administration is illogical, that's my firm believe. Moreover, financial embezzlement is not the only form of corruption. Attempting to alter a national budget secretly and causing its disappearance from the National Assembly is also corruption. Increasing feeding allocation from N500m to N1.7b in the presidency is corruption. Proposing to spend about N700m on Website update is corruption laden. Sanctioning a TSA policy that brewed N8b fraud only to deny it when it became public knowledge is also corruption. Allocating over N50b to Information Ministry is nothing but preparing a fertile ground for corruption. And finally, allowing State fund to be spent on one's presidential election and feigning ignorance is a height of corruption. No present Nigerian politician (including Buhari) has the bragging right to condemn others for any corruption allegation. That's my conclusion. 5 Likes 1 Share |

African leaders who rig elections in 'democratic' african countries set up their rigging machineries before the elections, but Jonathan didn't. Why? Because he felt that Nigerians loved him só much and that the 'goodluck' which was generally believed to follow him around by virture of his name Goodluck, would continue to follow him even to his tomb. But how wrong he was. At the point he conceded defeat he had already lost at his aso rock polling station, lost in the middle belt, lost in the south West, lost heavily in the north. Only the south south and south east were yet to be declared. There was nothing he could do. No Nigerian presdent ever cancelled an election at the 11th hour. Goodluck Jonathan knew what he had coming if he ever attempted that. Probably Gbagbo would have been his cell mate today. |

Abiola was brazenly stopped from becoming president despite wining the 1993 elections convincingly and nothing happened except for pockets of violence that claimed the lives of innocent citizens. If Jonathan had made up his mind in clinching to power such decision may have consumed even Buhari from the resultant backlash. OLADD: Starting with the last administration in the fight against corruption is the most logical thing to do because the records are fresh. In construction, we have what we call defects notification/liability period, that is a year after practical completion or hand/take over of a project by the client/employer. During this period of usually a year, all defects are brought to the attention of the contractor to rectify. The inability of Jonathan to probe his predecessor also confirms his aiding and abetting of graft and shows his insincerity to uphold the tenets of the office he held. Notwithstanding, we all should not relent to charge Buhari's government to probe all known alleged financial misdeeds of governments preceding Jonathan. Starting with Jonathan's government is a welcome idea. I am equally disappointed at the content of the presented budget. I condemn the irregularities in all terms. We must all continue to express our angst until suitable amends are made. My objective views! |

I would have given line by line responses to the OP's story (esp the Obj part) but really, what's the moral of this story? Is this illuminating how bad our values have gone now that bad is the new sexy  c'mon!!! I think NOA needs to work more on bringing out the negative effects of corruption to the ordinary life. People don't yet seem to understand how it affects their daily lives indirectly. |

Is it the bribery scandal, subsidy scam, pension scam, immigration death scandal or which particular one ? Please stop being ffoolish and understand Jonathan could have guided against such incidents if only he was determined and chose to live up to expectation of protecting lives n properties as the president of the country. The same way he ignorantly left boko haram unattended to until it nearly crippled his govt that was exactly what he did with security with elections 2011. Politics in Nigeria as always been volatile n it's the responsibility of the govt to highlight n provide additional security to black spots. May the soul of those that died during the 2011 election forever remained blessed. I do not perceive any coherence of purpose in OP's lamentations. Is OP suggesting that it is excusable to disregard the electoral laws of a country to save one's self from the consequences of contemptible leadership; even at the risk of plunging the country into a state of chaos and instability? If so, might I ask OP to to complete the picture by recommending who the inevitable casualties of such a dangerous proposition should be. Evidently, the OP's position is not well thought through! The right lesson must surely be that leaders, including the present ones, should start taking their positions of authority more seriously because the odds that they'll be made to face the consequences of incompetence by the system is ever increasing. I advise the OP to adopt this position as the more logical and sensible one. |

PUSIDRILA: Contrary to your opinion, articles of this nature are not meant to incite the citizens against the president but an attempt call tyrannical rulers to order. Power as we all know is transient, hence whoever occupies that seat must look back and learn from history in other to have a less stormy future. Buhari did not become president because of anybody's personal efforts but by the will of God and only He determines what will happen before 2019 and thereafter. |
