Cc.. Charism People who make it are the lucky ones , lucky in the sense that the have opportunities that others never had or will never have which they harnessed to their advantage. Opportunities like capital, good location, skills, business climate, experience e.t.c. You're just about right in your write up. I am not proving you wrong in anyway, nope nope, the succeeding texts are just my thoughts. Lucky ones, hmm. Truly there's a place for favour, undoubtedly, but what's luck. Let's say it's meeting place where opportunity meets with preparation. Example.. There's no light in my place for a while, I'm not certain light will come but I hope it does, so before I go to bed, I plugged my phone to a wall socket and hit the sack. I woke up the next morning and my phone is 100% charged. Is that luck? Opportunities and factors like capital, good location, skills, business climate, experience etc are very important if one must make it as an entrepreneur. Few of them are under ones control if he wants to make it as an entrepreneur. Let me take one after the other. Skill and experience, if one must make it in business then one must invest into knowledge, business and financial knowledge. Books and stuffs. It's only a fool that'll learn only from his own experience, learning from the experience of others in similar business is applaudible and wise. Most entrepreneur books and lecturers will advice you start small, starting small gives one the golden opportunity to gain experience that's lacked or can't be taught. Business climate and location: it is still one responsibility to study the business climate (the kind of business and goods that sell best in the a particular location). If possible changing location because of the business, or changing business because of your location. Capital...... That's the only thing one may lack control. There's always a way. One can set up a small business or work somewhere else to raise the needed capital. 3 Likes |

Nigeria is a country where all big investors have no inventions (tangible or intangible) to their credit. Bill Gates, Henry Ford, Michael Dell, Thomas Edison and the likes all have products to patent, but most entrepreneurs we have in Nigeria have invented nothing and have made it through dubious means. Entrepreneurship/vocational education is government's way of telling the youth and graduates that she (the government) lacks industrialisation and job creation strategies while the youth have been left to fate. Entrepreneurship/vocational education is government's way of making the youth/graduates look intellectually lazy and burdensome as well as telling them that they are have been abandoned in the valley of unemployment. Unemployment rate increased simply because government owned industries and companies get strangulated by the python of corruption as well as the refusal of the government to establish new ones. Entrepreneurship in advanced countries is about innovations, inventions, improvements, expansions, people and institutional empowerment. Modern and sophisticated skills are being utilised to manufacture goods and services which culminates into abundant job creation. Entrepreneurship in Nigeria is of the graduate job seeker told to engage in bead making, soap making, hair dressing, laundry and so on. These businesses have neither inventions nor advancement to add to the business practice and the economy, as they also have little or no impact on the international market. Entrepreneurship in Nigeria is also of the rich that colludes with the government to defraud the masses, destroy public corporations and infrastructures in order for them to import alternative goods. The rich set up few enterprises and often pay peanuts to their employees in order to increase their wealth; culminating into increase in poverty level and underemployment in the country. The government of advanced countries often invest billion of dollars on education and research, so they always have intellectuals who will offer innovative products and services to the world. These products and services are initially developed into small scale businesses as they many even grow into large enterprises. While Nigeria keeps wasting hard earned funds on Small and Medium Scale (SME) development, yet the businesses are nowhere to be found. Only an insane person will keep doing the same thing the same way and expect a different result. Am yet to see a nation that got developed by investing so little on the education of her youth and students but spend so much on SME propaganda. Still searching for a nation that gave nothing more than mere, non-professional, common, stark and non-sophisticated skills/training to her youth and achieved rapid industrial development. Why should we buy a trailer engine, fix it in a car and try to make it compete with an aircraft? Why should we make people earn mere skills and expect them to compete with foreign sophisticated technologies? We have to know that the issue of local production of goods and services is a serious competetion with the developed nations. Some questions for the proponents of entrepreneurship/vocational education. When will out textile, fashion and leather industry be able to make products of international standard? When will a Nigerian mechanic be able to manufacture car engines and other motor parts? When will our furniture makers be able to make furniture that will compete with ones made overseas? When will a computer repairer be able to produce motherboards, memorycards, monitors, just to mention a few? Take a look at the furniture industry in Nigeria, you'll discover it is almost dead because foreign furniture has flooded the Nigerian market. Foreign furniture makers have been able to introduce much variety of products with various designs, even at exorbitant prices, yet people still buy them. Imported furniture attains this much because modern machines are regularly produced to make new designs of furniture, but here in Nigeria, we only buy simple tools, we don't engage in design and manufacture of machines/tools to be used in the furniture industry, so we are perpetually making furniture that cannot compete with the foreign ones. It is only engineering provide modern machines, stack entrepreneurship cannot. Entrepreneurship and and vocational education has never helped Nigeria in the manufacture of modern machines for production of finished goods that can compete favourably with imported ones. The best entrepreneurship has offered us is to use social media means to engage in selling of imported products as well as setting up of few businesses with the use of foreign machines. It is appaling for government to still keep preaching the sermon that can never bring solutions to us. Every sector of the Nigerian economy has been badly affected by the erroneous policy of entrepreneurship and vocational education. From the agricultural sector to the transportation sector, from manufacturing to education, from construction to entertainment, name it, we have rendered our nation incapacitated when it comes to production of goods and services. There can never be abundant job opportunities as long as we keep executing this lame practice. I wonder why we have not giving so much vocational training to professional operating as doctors, nurses and pharmacist in the medical field. We give this set of people trainings that can make them compete favourably with their foreign counterpart. I believe it should appear proper to the government to substitute entrepreneurship and vocational education with the training they receive in the teaching hospitals. The government (after emptying the laboratories and workshops of polytechniques and universities) substituted requisite training for our engineers and scientist with entrepreneurship and vocational training, so they are rendered handicapped when it comes to provision of modern goods and services as well as job creation. It is high time we changed our job creation policy of entrepreneurship and vocational studies to provision of qualitative education at all levels, especially science and technology education so that Nigerian graduates would possess requisite modern and sophisticated skills for our nation and the world market at large. It is only qualitative education and intensive research that can initiate intellectual thinking for creation of innovative goods and services. Entrepreneurship and vocational studies have been found to have contributed immensely only to economy of nations with massive investments in education and research. Singapore and South Korea are the examples of nations that have eradicated illiteracy and have invested huge funds into science and technology education, so entrepreneurship thrives there. Let the laboratories and workshops of our secondary schools and higher institutions be adequately equipped with modern and facilities so as to provide avenues for learning practicals. We need to replicate the likes of Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg who utilised the qualitative education they obtained in the tetiary institutions to create worldwide business ventures in their fields. Glad to see ur post, glad tosee that Nigerians are now aware of the scam called entrepreneurship. God bless Nigeria 18 Likes 4 Shares |

Charism: These are the words of someone who is lazy and expects the government to feed him everything he needs. One thing i'm sure we all agree is that no society is ideal because people act differently and think in different ways. Also people do also come together to form a common bond to show their ideas in togetherness. Now in your school of thought you are against entrepreneurship and you cast it down like it has not been something that has changed your life. Take some time to look at how you have lived your life from infancy till now and tell me all the stuffs you have used through out life is from the government. You can't argue it because it is not the government that even made it possible for Seun to set-up nairaland that you are using to spread your discontent. One thing that has always bugged me though is our lack of innovation by our young entrepreneurs and i think that is what worries you. What we need to do as people is to rearrange our mindset and see how blessed we are as a nation and as africans. All the solid minerals you can think of,all the agricultural resources, good weather, human capacities, we have all, then why are we still poor? The government blame game is so stale now, and not blaming someone like you for shying away from starting your own business will be a crime for me. So i can feel your frustration friend. Success is not rare, success is relative to how you want to leave your life. Whatsoever a man thinketh that he is. There are small business owners who just want to be content with their income, run their business for as long as they live, take care of their family, stay away from insecurities and just be happy, That is how they view success. While some want to expand, build franchises and employ thousands of people, that is their own view of success. But you saying EVERYONE cannot be like Dangote is true but you are wrong to use it in a demeaning form while disrespecting well-meaning people all over. Another thing i will need to tell you is that there is nothing like luck in business. I'm very sure you have never started a business before to know that Success is when Opportunity meets Preparation. You must be prepared to face the challenges no matter what and then be prepared to take use of the opportunity. The success you earn is relative to how you prepared and to how best you maximized the opportunity. So talking about luck in entrepreneurship? That is so lame. I would also like to counsel you too. Failure is not the end of life. Successful people are the ones that learn to FAIL FORWARD. They don't let failures run them down. Don't you know these people you call their names like they are your demi-gods have gone through the most depressing times when they were getting around their business and success was elusive? Nothing was prepared for them on a bed of roses. Oh maybe you haven't heard of another man who collected even N1million from his uncle in the 70's to set up his business but he is a shoemaker today, while the Dangote you hear today thrived on just N500, 000 back then. Maybe you have not read the story of young boys in lagos who started their blogging enterprise with just N10, 000 back in 2005 and today they speak at TEDX. Or simply dont go too far, just talk to Seun and let him school you on how he started. I believe in the "nothing-can-stop-me mantra" even if you end up selling c.d's at the road side, but the most importatnt thing that you should never forget is not to give up on your thinking, and who you are and what you want to become. If you continually strive at it while keeping your goals and dreams intact, you will definitely make it no matter what this OP's definition of success is. Abi nor be don jazzy be bus conductor for lagos before? And lastly for entrepreneurs, i know the times are hard and you need money to make things work. But don't let the hesitation and frustration make you start a business you have no passion in. It is small business owners who did stuff with no passion and ended up messing everything that may have made this op to come out with an attack on people who are desiring to effect a change. Understand that it is passion before profit, but if you have side business giving you some funding, don't stay too long there - get some little funds no matter how little and dive into your PASSION and God will make it a success for you. 14 Likes 4 Shares |

Yeah i agreed with the OP that some people have special privileges which others dont have, but actually our over reliance on government is what is causing all this increase in unemploymeny, it doesnt mean you must start with big capital for you to succeed, start with the small amount you have, cut your unnecessary expenses, invest in any legal business, give it a year or two. But so long as we keep deceiving ourself that because we have university degree government must provide job for us, i dont think our current situation will change any sooner |

The OP is one big fat liar! The reason most people fail in entrepreneur is because they don't start or should I say attempt it at all until they can't find a job. By the way, did the OP just said luck? I've a friend who's sponsoring himself with his business, could he be lucky? Mttshew! Don't worry bro. this is the most useless post I have ever seen. so u mean we should wait for government to give us job abi. they have not even finished paying the employed ones. so if they don't help SME we should just keep shouting and protesting like we have been doing since before MJ did the moonwalk. yes not everyone is ment to be an entrepreneur so if it not for you, then work for those who are fit for it. I rather fry akara at the road side than be unemployed and sit at home to eat from my parent that might be frying the same akara u don't even know how lame this post is. abeg stop spreading ur negative mind set all around entrepreneurship deserve every bit of attention it is getting PS your post lack adequate information. 6 Likes |

In reality, entrepreneurship reduces unemployment. There are numerous entrepreneurs that are born, but many others are made. Facing challenges as an entrepreneur is not specific to Nigeria. Entrepreneurs in other countries face numerous challenges as well. It is true that we have our challenges like access to funds and poor infrastructure. However, most Nigerians equate entrepreneurship to buying and selling or opening a small business. Entrepreneurship is a composite skill, which includes imagination, readiness to take risks, ability to bring together and put to use other factors of production such as capital, labour, land and other intangible resources. One of the qualities of entrepreneurship is the ability to discover an investment opportunity and to organize an enterprise, thereby contributing to real economic growth and creating jobs in the process. It involves taking of risks and making the necessary investments under conditions of uncertainty and innovating, planning and taking decisions. All that is required is for the government to provide the enabling environment for entrepreneurs to thrive. 1 Like |

@op...true the economy cannot depend on entrepreneurs only to develop. True the FG is responsible for providing the infrastructures to encourage and expand entrepreneurship. But your write up seems to suggest that it is a waste of time starting a successful small business period since all the basic infrastructures are not in place... or millions of naira is not available.Yes Dangote started with N50 million ...how many times has he multiplied that now? Same with any small business starting with N10K...like Dangote... it is about how the person keep taking the business to another level where he can be as sucessful as Dangote in terms of how many times over he has turned over his initial investment. Like the roadside seller... entrepreneur... most start and stop at that level... never looking to expand or take their business to another level. Keep waiting for the FG to be perfect. ... keep waiting for a godfather to drop you millions to start a business....keep waiting to start halfway to the top...if stress , Hbp or poverty doesn't send you under the earth then like soo many others... you would surely lose your sanity. We need to change this mentality of starting halfway to the top or not starting at all. 3 Likes |

No light for welders, barbers, tailors , etc. How do they expect people to break even and make profit when they put so much into generators. Government create favorable economic policies for the citizens, our government should follow suit. |

The definition of entrepreneurship in Nigeria and the expectations are wrong and unrealistic, secondly small business suffer a lot from the external environment in which they cannot control and also the internal environment which affects you, while you try to grow the business .The government agencies work against you and they are not for you and they are not for government. If does Asians create opportunities for them selves here ,then we are really doing something wrong . 2 Likes |

Re: Why Entrepreneurship Is Not The Solution To Unemployment In Nigeria by Nobody: 1:11pm On Jan 24, 2016 |
The OP has raised some very valid points in his post. This is something I keep telling people; entrepreneurship goes beyond just starting a business. It's not enough to just say "I'm tired of submitting CVs or I don't want to work for anybody, therefore I'm going to start my own business". Research claims that over 70% of start-up businesses fail within the first two years! This doesn't mean people (especially youths) shouldn't go into self-employment ventures, but that we all need to be very careful before we use whatever little money we've saved or borrowed to start something we cannot continue. We should all realise that the present economic climate of Nigeria doesn't favour all kinds of entrepreneurship (take agriculture for instance), even with all the lip service our politicians and motivational speakers pay to the idea. Entrepreneurship means innovation and creativity, a deep understanding of the prevailing conditions of the market one wants to go into, and a strong desire/willpower to go the extra mile, while learning from one's mistake. So before you think of yourself as an entrepreneur, ask yourself..."do I have what it takes to see this through"? 2 Likes 1 Share |
