feelamong: Those "portfolio managers" you blame are the very agents whose actions increase the prices of stocks, enabling the companies which issue said stocks to raise greater sums of money for the stakes they sell to the public. That you see portfolio investment as a negative thing only shows how little you understand about financial markets. GEJ was rightly termed an "incompetent buffoon", but Buhari is hardly proving to be any better in terms of economic management. The reason for the decline in investment flows is because no potential foreign investors want to be caught short by bringing their money to Nigeria only to suffer from a devaluation afterwards. Had Buhari allowed the Naira to devalue to a more reasonable value, the level of FDI wouldn't have halved over the last year; ironically, this very insistence on "defending" the Naira is robbing it of a crucial source of foreign exchange which would have helped slow the currency's decline. 12 Likes |
