Like play, like drama, President Muhammadu Buhari has spent 250 days in Aso Rock. From the day he took oath of office, not much has changed in the conduct of government business, especially with mid- career civil servants, many would say.

We have seen the National Assembly becoming more notorious for members allowances and loans to the detriment of their constituents. Governors run their states like fiefdoms. The judiciary is not shaken and only the body language of PMB is new.

While some say it is crude, I see it as a better form of administration than the ineffectual buffoonery of the immediate past. Inspite of that, it is not good enough to mid-wife good governance. PMB’s 250 days might have slowed down primitive acquisitiveness at the top, but it has also emboldened mid-career officers to continue in their maniacal covetousness.

In spite of the storm over corruption, the last 250 days has seen no corrupt public officer in jail. We have had more of social media trial and triumphalism of agencies that could only bark but not bite. Of all the agencies of the State, only three – Office of the National Security Adviser, NIMASA and, perhaps, Customs – have been thrust to the anti-corruption furnace. Others, including the NNPC, regarded as the cesspit of corruption, are untouched.

This is the same country where, only last Monday, one Abdullah Idris, a tiler, was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate Court for allegedly stealing a bottle of beer valued at N250. The same day, the court clamped him into Kirikiri and fixed February 10 (next Wednesday) for his sentencing! No bail conditions, no allocutos, no technicalities, no SAN.

A judicial administration system cannot be more efficient. So, why does the wheel grind slowly when it comes to high-profile corruption cases? Nigerians are in such a haste to brook the tardiness and sloppiness of discriminatory governance model. They want action, not motion. Nigerians do not see this probe bereft of a strategy to combat corruption as mere grandstanding and sloganeering.  Our challenges are too daunting, so myriad that they defy a piecemeal or go-slow approach. Away from the collective amnesia and irreconcilable differences, I believe, things still run normally. Our courts that have issues fast-tracking corruption cases are quick to dispense with cases involving lesser mortals.

But beyond these, we need a blueprint to fight this war. It is hypocritical to pay ministers less than N250,000 (less than $1,000) monthly and expect them not to compromise in offices where they sign off billions of naira daily.

Are the president and his anti-graft agencies oblivious of the owners of the luxury apartments in the nation’s capital? They are public servants on meagre and unrealistic incomes. One of them was recently arrested by the EFCC for allegedly doling out N60m as tithe in a Pentecostal church. At Grade level 14 and on a monthly salary of N121, 460, it improbable that the religious obligation is cleanly sourced. That is merely a symbolism of the rot in service.

Waltz and all, the next few weeks to his first anniversary, Nigerians would like to see the public declaration of assets by PMB’s appointees in the spirit of transparency and accountability when they leave office. Beyond that, the pauperised people look forward to the 500,000 teaching jobs, promised in his budget speech. The hungry look forward to the N5,000 promised the ‘vulnerable’ persons and all want an end to security challenges beyond phatic words and oblique classification of what is happening in Sambisa. An end to Boko Haram insurgency will confirm if PMB’s government is another hope betrayed or a realistic hope that change has come.

Well, if it were easy for the war of corruption to be fought and won, no doubt it'ld have happened before PMB's time. But others have found it so tough and inciting that they abandoned it and 'joined them' since they couldn't beat them. So, when we see a willing soul, we should lend our support and hope it turns out good.
That being said, the aspect I'm very much concerned with is that the President is being quite offhand in his dealings. From associating himself with odd elements of the society to win elections, to making unrealistic promises during the campaign, up to spending over a quarter of his tenure outside the country, he is repeating the very style of governance we've seen at one point or the other since 1999. And he's also doing so in a manner reminiscent of the junta era.
Perhaps, he should have been decent enough to let us understand he is no different from others because what was touted to be #Change looks like #Revert

You guys need to be patient. First I remember last year you guys where shouting about fuel scarcity, now, tell me, is there anything such as fuel scarcity? Nope!

The scarcity of pms didn't just stop, PMB and his team actually reduce the price from N87 to N86.50. And some people will say PMB hasn't achieve anything? Tufiakwa!.

PMB means well, but only his tree can't make a forest. Those around him are crooks and his intentions are constantly overwhelmed by these people's actions.

They are merely waiting for his tenures to elapse and so we're back to status quo! Fear dey catch me!
