Months had passed and they were preparing for their First Term Examination in SS2. The school activities returned to normal after about two weeks, when the police had come around to ask questions. They had called Mariam's friends to the principal's office and the senior student who had given Fatimah Mariam's phone. Though Fatimah was implicated by him, she was able to get away, when he informed the police he had seen the phone on the floor, narrating it could have fallen from Mariam when jubilating their victory - on the inter house sport day. Nonetheless, the police were going to keep both of them in the suspect circle; due for interrogation anytime they were needed. If every parent would have reacted at what Fatimah had done, her parents had. They had come around to the school so she could be scolded and she was. She was lashed 12 strokes of cain on the assembly ground and the issue died down since no one had a clue what had become of Mariam. Melvin, her boyfriend had been taken into custody, as a suspect or rather a criminal who should know her whereabouts, since they were last seen together. And according to what they had read in Mariam's Dairy, Melvin was strongly implicated. He had missed his WAEC, due to being held behind bars. His parents did what they could to persuade Mariam's parents but they weren't even available, not to speak of talking to them. Only Salisu had been the only member of the family but there was little he could do. Much as the school had wanted Melvin to seat for his WAEC, they had also pleaded with Salisu but he had gotten mad, “how can you let him write an exam if my niece is still missing or dead? He must confess where he kept her before any consideration could be made,” and so, Melvin had missed the school WAEC conducted about 6-8months ago. Apparently, since suspicion was off his trail, Salisu had decided his gangs back down on the investigation they had planned with Danlami; the Vino Tinto they drank that got them drowsy; Radio Nigeria and others. Melvin had been a good relief for them. Salisu continued his flirtatious lifestyle. Danlami had traveled out of the country. Despite the fact the phone had been recovered from Fatimah, Salisu couldn't get a grasp on it; the Police had taken it to also further their investigation. He later dismissed the issue of the phone and the Recording - citing that, the police might not get to know the phone has a recorder, since it was a not so advance application phone: a torch-light phone. Principo and his gang had all done their final exams but they hadn't left the school without causing havoc. They had fought on the day they tore their school uniforms; injuring themselves and getting into a fight with other schools that had come to look for their trouble. Now, they were gone but they still kept David in mind. Effiong and Tunde had also gotten Fatimah and Mariam out of their minds once news went viral Mariam was dead. Fatimah became limited to where she went. She had bridged the grudges between herself and Zainab and they had become friends again, but now, Mariam their third-half was no more to give her wit. They were missing her now. The fun filled Mariam who teases and makes everyone smile. He had tried all he could to get elected but Mariam's father was utterly disappointed. He was betrayed by the party's Chairman and executives even after the primaries. He was relegated to the background and shame washed him thoroughly from head downwards. He was left with just a choice; to go reconcile with his wife and live their lives at their new found country, devoid of the Nigeria ever corrupt society. But would it be easy for him to reconcile? After all his wife had faced? Losing a daughter in the process of being elected for a post that wasn't worth the life of his daughter. Yet greed, no matter how it had been implanted in the heart of man, would always want to germinate and bear fruit. And exactly that was what had happened. He virtually had lost everything; daughter and position. 1 Like |

PROCEEDING CHAPTER. The memory of Miss Yemisi had faded away after just a week he had spent the evening with her at the unilag garden. He never knew Fatimah was crushing on him until that evening when she had reacted in the presence of David; shattering David’s hope, Yemisi’s also. Fatimah had afterwards called Miss Yemisi on phone and abused her. No one would have thought she could do that. He recall as he climbed down the stairs - the call he had received the following day. “Hello George,” Miss Yemisi sniffed and sobbed, “So you mean we can’t be together?” He had not anticipated nor formulated any response for her, and he was silent for so long two minutes. He had even forgotten she was still on the line. Her sobs were no fake, she cried into the phone, her voice already lost. He cut the call and sent her a message he was sorry, he doesn’t know how he feels. The kiss he had engaged her lips was just by mistake. He never knew Fatimah loved him and he wasn’t loving her in return; lying. He had always had feelings for Fatimah and had nurtured the thoughts of having her. Yet the opportunity he hoped he had gotten to do away with Zainob and focus on Fatimah whom his heart had longed for was cut short. David being angry about how it had all panned out, didn’t fail to tell Clinton’s brother who had come to attack him - alongside his cult members one time when he was on his way home. They had confronted him in relation to the night they saw him kneeling before Fatimah at unilag. He had received the meanest beating of his life that he regretted ever deciding to stop using his jazz. He had never knew there were people stronger and wicked than he was until that day, he had an encounter with the A’ye axe’men Lords. He confessed without thinking twice when the suffering was too much that, truly he wanted Fatimah but she seemed to be interested in Adefemi, making the mobs angry further. They had beaten him to a pulp of their satisfaction. Though Clinton didn’t want any situation he would be sent out of school, he had agreed with his brother Adefemi was no threat. He was just a friend to Fatimah and that was all. And that had saved Adefemi’s head, may be he would have been giving a fair share beating David got. David started missing school after that. He couldn’t open up to anybody what had happened if he knew he had a future to pursue. And considering his mother’s state, he had decided keeping mute was the best he could do to secure his future. He trotted into the library to read his notes and get additional references he could use to understand all he had read. He passed the aisle of shelves European novels were shelved and proceeded to where textbooks were. He bent and squat on his knees, placing the books he had carried along on the floor. He skimmed across a shelf of books, flipped through some he removed from them, shelving them back. He eye searched again the rows of textbook available for Biology and picked one out which he thought might contain what he wanted to read. As he stood up, he decided going through the aisle and have his seat across the border off the aisle. Once he had passed the shelf into the open space where reading furniture were set, he met Fatimah’s gaze and she ignored him. Her face were rumpled in an erratic manner. Adefemi changed course and decided to take a seat far from where she was seated. Nonetheless, she had started packing her books together, said her prayers after reading and made to leave. Zainab who sat opposite her asked silently whether she was leaving and she nodded, disappearing behind the door of the library, without signing out. He buried his head into the Biology textbook and read Homeostasis. He couldn’t understand what he was reading from this textbook, even when he had well comprehended the note Mr Orowale had given them in class. Zainob flipped into his thoughts and he recalled the last time they had spent time in class after school. She had confessed to him she used to be an Ogbanje but she was relieved from their grip, yet, her mother hadn’t completed the sacrifice, which was why she was still experiencing the evil power, evil control she had. Now, she had started to say, when tears strode down his face; she was free from them and she felt different. He had held her head and they engage themselves in a long kiss, their sobs echoing from the walls of the classroom. Their love was on fire now. The whole school complex knew about them. He had customized a cardigan with the name D’prince on the back, likewise had she done with D’princess on the back. That had also made Fatimah envious but she had to strengthen the love between herself and Cliinton, and she did anyway. A severance in the relationship between herself and Adefemi had aided that. Perhaps, the reason why he couldn’t comprehend was because of the new NYSC teachers that had been posted to their school. He was still held back at the importance of Osmoregulation when someone sat at the seat opposite his. He didn’t look up to see who it was and he dazed his eyes, imagined the pictures he had used as examples to remember the importance of Osmoregulation. But the new P.H.E teacher filled his mind. She ransacked his mind whenever he thought about Zainob. What was his with P.H.E teachers? He thought for a second, ignoring the textbook and staring at the plywood barricade. The last one was Miss Yemisi and now, he shook his head, scrub at his hair with his two hands and relaxed, peering into the ceiling; Miss Funmi had also noticed him on her first class. May be he shouldn’t be quiet and focused in classes again. But how could he not be? He had always done same in the English teacher’s class. The commerce teacher’s class. He thought about all the female teachers that taught some subjects he offers; none of them had taken notice of him to such extent these female corps were doing. Why always me? He felt a slight headache and wiped at the sudors on his forehead. He remembered the same scenario with Yemisi and said he wasn’t going to involve himself being friend with any youth corp teacher again. But Miss Funmi was irresistible. She was light skin like Fatimah and the feeling he was beginning to have for her eluded his reasoning faculty. He was on the egde of cheating on Zainob this time. He had grown in the last few months; both in way he felt towards ladies and his stature. He was no kid anymore he had thought. Perhaps the kiss he had received from Miss Yemisi that night had changed him, had opened him to the world of flirt, of union with ladies. However, the union wasn’t happening with ladies or girls of his age. One could argue that Zainob was, but the introduction of Yemisi and Funmi, was a case to counter and assert he was getting engaged with ladies way above him. How can this be happening to him? Why not those other big guys in my class or those presently in SS3? He was too young to involve in all these. How would he even cope with it? He knew he never knew what feelings towards the opposite sex was but in the past few months, things had changed. He was still staring into the ceiling but the colour he was seeing now was bleak red, instead of the white the concrete ceiling was painted. “Adefemi,” came in a whisper from his adjacent seat. Miss Funmi stretched her gracious neck forward, her smiles, charming and freckles of her lipstick shimmered. Her beauty was revealing, on per with Fatimah. “Are you thinking while you should be preparing for your exams?” the voice continued in whisper. He had closed his eyes when he heard his name and shut they still were as the question rolled out. This was a devil’s work, he had affirmed in his mind as she spoke. He was wondering may be he was dreaming or something. However, he heard her voice well. It was hers and hers alone. She was endowed with that sonorous voice, no matter how she tries to whisper, it would seem an echo in a doom. It was her, the P.H.E teacher. The very reason he couldn’t concentrate. “Don’t tell me you are thinking of me.” She teased or so it appeared but to Adefemi, this woman must be a devil's incarnate or the former part of Zainob, the Ogbanje. He had often meet them a lot. Wasn’t it last two months, on the day of his church harvest that he had met Onyeka, another Ogbanje one could easily recognize with the way she was impeccably beautiful? It appeared God had really bought a bulk time to mold her. But Onyeka too wasn’t an Ogbanje anymore, as to what she revealed to him. Well, at least she had been truthful to him, but he didn’t consider to love her or may be they were dating; he knew they weren’t. She was just a girl that makes him attend church frequently now. He had become a reborn born-again. He was never a church deserter before he met her, but she had made him add church to the better part of his schedule. “look at me,” she paused and licked her lips, “If you know you can’t concentrate. I can help you,” she picked up her phone, “Adefemi, come with me,” she concluded and left the library, Adefemi staring at her figure 8, ignoring if someone caught him or not. |

He remained restless on the sofa he sat on. He crossed his leg and uncrossed it again. He looked intently at the glass of water that sat on the stool close by. He calculated as spec of cold water slid down the cup repeatedly. He worked aimlessly at his fingers, pinching nothing in particular out of his hands. “Will you answer me or not?” she shouted at him, her patience wearing thin. She stood up angrily from the sofa she sat, arms akimbo, shaking one leg fashionably as she expressed her impatient. “I swear to Allahu,” Salisu swore, “I have nothing I’m hiding from you.” She shook her head spitefully and walked out of his presence and into the living room she went. He felt relieved thinking she was not coming back. He picked the glass of water up and took a long sip to quench his dry mouth; his taste, and returned the cup, drops of water falling and dabbing his blue attire. He put a hand to his chest to measure his heartbeat. He calmed himself, saying ‘nothing will happen Salisu. Nothing at all.’ He had just finished reassuring himself when his wife barged out of the living room. “Okay, it seems I’ve held this enough,” she raised her voice. “The document you claim you wanted to collect from Mariam. And your suspicious movement and stealth; your days out of the house and all that,” she paused and looked at the sweats that were oozing out his head. She saw the patch of his armpit wet too. “Now,” she continued, “tell me what you know about that girls whereabouts or else.” He rose up rapidly, “or else what?” she was startled, looking into each other’s pale eyes. “Or else what Hajiya?” “Don’t touch me,” she swipe his hands off her shoulder when he wanted to calm her down after he had shouted. He made another attempt and a thunderous sound of slap transcend the room’s calm. The lights went off. The fan swirled slowly as though the slap was a hindrance to its function, not the power outage. He looked at her sternly as if he would return the slap. He looked determined and clenched his fist, sucked at his tongue. His eyes shot out red, wicked and lit up in fury. “Because of you, Fatimah had refused to come and visit me. And the documents you claimed to want to receive from her as kept me wondering you have involvement in all that is going on. And unless you tell me what is going on, you won’t know any peace in this house.’’ “You this fool. You this ingrate. Since I married you, you’ve always been against me. You have never taken my side before. And now…” he stopped short to think about what he had in mind. Was he going to reveal what he had done to her? Was he going to lose control of himself because of this woman? “And now what? Ehn? Continue your rant na. You are the big fool Salisu. The fool, I repeat.” “You see, I won’t stay here and exchange words with you,” he picked up his phone from the chair arm and left the room, contemplating what he was going to do to her. May be shutting her up would be the best thing to do. |
